I stayed here for 3 nights as part of a coach tour of New England in the Fall. Would have loved to have stayed longer to appreciate the area more fully. This is a wonderful hotel although it was getting towards the end of the season and staff were starting to appear jaded. Our rooms were cabins dotted around the huge estate on the shore of Lake Champlaine. A more beautiful outlook would be hard to achieve. The cabins were very comfortable and to go anywhere in a hurry, all you had to do was call '0' on the telephone and ask for transport to take you where you wanted to go. Along came a gold buggy and they whisked you to your chosen destination on the estate within minutes. Fantastic.

The breakfasts each day were a sight to behold. I have never eaten so much fruit in the morning as I did when I was there. All in all, this is a great place to spend some time.

We're so glad to learn that you enjoyed your visit with us this past fall. You're right that there is a lot to do and see in our small state of Vermont, and we hope you'll make a return visit soon. Thank you for staying with us!

I had a terrific stay with extended family at the Basin Harbor Club. The place is beautiful - the grounds, the buildings, the setting are all breath-taking. The entire resort has a sort of faded elegance I actually get a kick out of - old money stays here (not referring to myself). Lots of blue blazers, khaki trousers and gin & tonics after 5 pm. Ralph Lauren before Ralph Lauren, if you know what i mean. If you want Egyptian cotton sheets and a jacuzzi in your room, forget it. The high point: this place is paradise for kids. The recreational options, and the ease of getting bikes, boats, and a smashing barbecue, just to name a few, are terrific. The low point: do not, under any circumstances, eat at the Red Mill restaurant, one of the dining options. The food is deplorable, and the staff seem to all have flunked out of charm school. (The main dining room is the exact opposite experience.) Also, take the time to explore Vergennes - if you want post-card perfect quaint, this is the place. I'd go back without hesitation - jumping into Lake Champlain off of Basin Harbor's diving board is an experience not to be missed.

How nice that this extended family enjoyed their time together at Basin Harbor this summer. Actually, several cottages do have jacuzzi tubs, but the guest is correct that kids have a blast with all there is to do. We're sorry they did not have a good experience at the Red Mill, but glad to know they enjoyed the food and service at the Red Mill. Thank you for your feedback.

We stayed here as part of a tour of New England. We were mainly disappointed to be put in the attic rooms of the lodge rather than a cabin - single beds and limited ceiling height for anyone over 5'4". The grounds were lovely and game facilities were good. I have never been served so quickly in a restuarant in all my life - four courses in less than an hour must be a record - and chronic indigestion followed. Watch out for the 20% on the bar bills too. We had been so looking forward to our stay and came away feeling rather cheated.

We were so sorry to learn of this guest's unhappiness with the room and speed of food service after the fact (we closed for the season on October 21st). The guest didn't mention whether s/he had asked to be moved to another room or cottage, but we'd have been glad to show alternate accommodations if they were available. It is too bad that the guest didn't ask the server to slow down the pace of service at the meal. It is so easy to address difficulties when they inevitably occur, and so hard to offer adequate apologies after the fact. Thanks for letting us know about your visit nonetheless.

We stayed here one night on a hiking trip through Vermont and loved the place. The "room" was a cabin immediately adjacent to the lake with its own deck, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a small living area with fireplace. The grounds were lovely and immaculately cared for, decorated for Halloween with lots of pumpkins. The dining room is semi-formal in the evening, which is a nice break from the jeans/hiking boot ensembles we wore all day, and the food was excellent. When it rained after dinner, they provided a driver back to the cabin, if you wanted it. My husband was ready to give up the hiking and move in.

As part of the bridal party for a couple who choose to marry here, I had no choice but to stay at the Basin Harbor Club. The place looked great from the sites and reviews but my experience there left me very disappointed. We checked in, which took an inordinate amount of time, and went to our cabin to quickly change for the rehearsal dinner. Right as we were racing out the door, another guest knocked to say that they were staying in that very cabin. We explained that we were given the keys and had checked in. This happened once more before I called the front desk to inquire about the situation. The woman to whom I spoke did not once apologize for checking us in to the wrong cabin and quite frankly was unhelpful. We had to quickly gather our things and move to another cabin making us late to the rehearsal dinner. Not once during our stay, did anyone apologize or acknowledge the mistake. When I reported as much to the club, after we had left, I received an email from the owner, Penny Beach, explaining that "The Front Desk staff had arranged to send you a bottle of wine with a note of apology. However, they were awaiting the actual bottle to send to you but it was never brought to their office, which was compounded when they neglected to follow up to make sure it had been delivered." The incident, how it was handled, and the explanation from the owner all illustrate how incompetent the staff and management is. I received nothing more than the lame explanation and her apology via email.

When we were finally placed in the correct cabin, a studio it was pretty dated and dingy. For the price, the accommodations were extremely underwhelming. This whole place needs a facelift, from the interiors, to the staff and the management. Given a choice I would never stay here again and I would absolutely not recommend this place. Save your money and go somewhere with good customer relations and nice accommodations.

We deeply regret the angst our mistake caused. Our desk clerk inadvertently handed the wrong registration materials to this guest - same last name, different first name and address - who signed the form but didn't call our attention to the mistake. We understand how that can happen as people are often tired from the journey and don't quite pay attention to the form. We've done it ourselves. The error was discovered when the second party arrived. Since all accommodations here are different from one another, and these were returning guests, they had been confirmed in the cottage the writer had inadvertently been given.

Could we have handled the situation in a more gracious manner? Absolutely. We didn't check to see that the amenity that had been sent to the guest for an apology had actually arrived. We didn't apologize to the guest at check out. And she obviously didn't like our response to her guest questionnaire. Our life depends on good recommendations and returning guests - we've been at this for 126 years - and we are very sorry for these bad feelings. We can certainly understand why this guest has such a bad taste in her mouth. We've learned from this experience and are very grateful to her for taking the time to share her story.
