“Bed and Breakfast just turned out to be Bed”
Reviewed November 17, 2010

When we booked the room, we were believing it was a Bed and Breakfast. When we got there, we were told that breakfast would not be served as the restaurant was closed for two weeks before the ski season began. We were never told this when we booked. The original room had a heater that was very loud and the windows had thin coverings. When we slept, the street light shining into our room made it difficult to sleep. However, after complaining to the front desk, they were very accommodating and put us in a better room. No complaints on the rooms or the front desk.

We stayed two nights at the Inn. The restaurant was closed those nights but we found the breakfast extremely disappointing. Our room had beautiful antique furniture and a comfy bed. The worst part of our stay were the staff. They had difficulty raising their heads from the screen or phone to look at you - we had to instigate every time. We got the impression that they were just playing games or talking to friends, they didn't care about their guests.

Booked the "deluxe" suite. Arrived to find out it is a room with a fireplace in a building out behind the main hotel. The room was terrible!,, unpainted steps to a deck with peeling ballasters and rails that looked as if they could fall apart any minute. Windows missing shades, Lightbulb missing from above bathroom mirror, stained shabby carpeting.
Stacked fireplace wood was cut up pieces of 2x4 framing with nails still in them!
Pieces of old rotted exterior decking piled up underneath outside deck.
This place is awful. Judging from the reviews ,, no one there seems to care much.
Avoid at all costs! Go to the Green Mountain Inn or the Stoweflake lodge,, both of those places were excellent!

The error in my confirmation email should have rung warning signals. We arrived at the inn at 10.30pm to not a soul in sight, not even in the restaurant, despite other restaurants in the town buzzing with activity. Our family suite, although pleasantly furnished, was in reality 3 converted servants rooms under the eaves, the children`s room virtually lacking a window. We descended to breakfast the following morning at the allocated time, to find no serving staff, a few leftovers, no tables set and hot drinks served in polystyrene cups. The person in front of me helping themselves to the last of the waffle mix clutched a folder so I asked whether she worked there - it turned out she was in fact the owner!! Having helped herself to food in front of her guests she then proceeded to sit down at the table next to ours to hold a management meeting in a loud voice. If this is their version of hospitality, the Inn`s days are seriously numbered - a real shame as the historic inn dating back to 1850 has beautiful common areas and a reputation handed down from generations. Management owe it to the inn to ensure its success, regrettably a serious turnaround is needed to regain the inn`s undoubted loss of reputation under its new management.

Management apologizes for your unpleasant breakfast experience. The manager and owner did indeed immediately refill the waffle mix when you indicated it was low that morning within two minutes of your request despite the breakfast no longer being served as it was after 10 a.m. The manager and owner did have a meeting to dicuss the changes to the breakfast service to provide a better guest experience immediately after hearing your complaint , and apologize if the meeting disturbed you. It is our goal to provide superior service for all customers and have since hired a more responsive and friendly attendant to better serve the needs of our guests such as you and your family.

The inn is historic and many rooms will be considered romantic and cozy which could explain the tight quarters of this particular room you stayed in. Please ask for the luxury suite with the spa tub, balcony and fireplace which should accommodate your family much better.

The website makes this inn look ideal and a deal at the price we got. We were in the standard rooms - $119/night. Our first room was terrible. The "quilts" were old, threadbare and awful. The pictures weren't up on the wall. The bathroom door was broken, there was mold on the wall and hair in the drain trap. The room also smelled. When we asked to change, my husband was allowed to look at several rooms. The first one he was sent to was clearly under renovation, and the front desk didn't know this. The second room we took but it was marginally better than the room we were first assigned. It had been recently painted, though they may have used the shower curtain as a drop cloth as it had paint splotches on it. There was still mold on the bathroom ceiling and there was a constant knocking of pies throughout the night. We didn't have a lot of choice by that time of night. The restaurant was nice and though oblivious, the front desk man was also nice. We weren't offered any compensation or explanation for the state of the rooms.

Management apologizes for your recent visit. We did undergo a renovation in our economy rooms in the Carriage House building at that time and did indeed paint the walls and undergo minor changes to these rooms. The lower rates on these rooms were offered to offset the recent in progress rennovations during the ski season. We did replace the old quilts with new duvets, pillows, pictures and down fillings a few months ago which are quite nice and provide a beautiful look to the bedding ensemble. In addition, we offer 16 beautifuly appointed rooms in our main inn that offer antiques, some with balconies and fireplaces, four poster beds and down comforters. Our inn is very immaculately clean and we are sorry you had a bad experience. The housekeeper that cleaned your room was changed after your post and you will find our housekeeping staff very attentive and fastidious about their clean rooms. Our restaurant does close at 10 p.m. like many lodges in the Stowe area . We do have a few guest rooms above the restaurant which prefer not to be disturbed by keeping the restaurant open too late. We apologize for our casual laid back style of our front desk agents. We assure you that they are all caring individuals that embrace the full Vermont lifestyle and friendly attitude. We hope to see you back soon and look forward to seeing you and your family.

This property is under new management as of mid-September. It needs any management. I was put in Room 120 of the "motel" and let me just say that this room was a disaster. The sofa had a visible hole in it in the front. The carpet was stained in multiple places. One of the lamps had no lightbulb and it was not replaced after phoning. The heating system (!) was falling off the wall. In short, the room was not suitable for human habitation, especially at $140 (that included taxes). After going to the desk to register my problems I was ignored by the "new" management. When I got back from a wedding I decided to just drive home as the desk was closed at 10:20 pm on a Saturday night. There are multiple properties in and around Stowe--until the Inn gets its act together I would encourage avoiding it.

My family had a wonderful stay at Stowe Inn. Our room was comfortable, though the bathroom could use an updating. The common areas were very spacious and well-appointed. One afternoon it just rained and rained so we decided to just hang out at the Inn. I made myself a cup of tea(always available), sat in one of the very cozy chairs, opened a door to the porch, and read my book while listening to the rain. It was absolutely heaven! The front desk employees were friendly and strove to make us happy. The Inn is just up the road from "downtown" so we were able to walk to many of the places we wanted.
