Little late review, but here it is anyway.
A short drive off of I-89, Stowe Mountain Lodge is indeed right at the base of Spruce Peak, the lesser peak of the resort. To travel over to the main mountain, simply use the "Over easy" gondola right out of the hotel. During dangerously windy days, this and other gondolas may close as they did for us one day. A bus makes round trips about every 10 minutes. This alone gives an enormous advantage to this hotel if you don't feel like driving to and from the ski station, and not necessarily at such a great financial disadvantage.
Valet service begins as you park in front of the hotel, with a valet opening your door and asking to bring in your luggage. Valets are generally nice. Travellers who prefer to watch over their own belongings, as you would were you travelling in other countries, might feel slightly uneasy about the staff's insistence on taking everything for you. Your car is parked in an interior parking, and having it wait for you outside to go out takes about 5 minutes.
Check-in is easy.
The concierge service is fantastic. We had to delay our trip by 48 hours with only 24 hours' notice, and the concierge took care of the room and the pre-purchased ski tickets with the station in about 5 minutes over the phone, while politely asking if he could reserve a dinner for us some time.
Staff is indeed very young, but definitely from the area. We met some staff members on their days off skiing at the mountain with their young friends. The answer to most questions is "I don't know", but they seem to have a genuine desire to be of service and go out of their way to be polite and accomodate reasonable demands.
The ski valet is often reported to be slow, but we didn't suffer any of it. Ski and boots could be obtained immediately.
Clean. Two or three hairs leftover on the pillows, which might drive some people off, but the sheets were definitely cleaner than anything I saw in any mexican or nearby luxury hotel on "all-included vacations". The bathroom and the rest of the room were absolutely perfectly clean. No troubles with water flow in any part of the bathroom. The gas fireplace functioned well, as well as the TV. Didn't try the wireless internet. The kitchenette provides a small fridge, a small dishwasher which the maid uses to clean your dishes if you haven't already done so, a large microwave, sufficient and nice china. We were able to eat breakfast in, prepare included coffee, and save our lunch without any troubles.
We tried the pool and swam out in the heated water without any discomfort despite the cold winter. Two jacuzzis provide added heat. They were almost crowded though while we stayed, in the middle of the week and in down season where the hotel was likely almost empty, so it might get problematic on busy week-ends. We saw, but didn't try the gym, which seemed very well equipped, along with a trainer.
We tried the Solstice restaurant. Visiting the US, we expected enormous portions and were surprised with the minuscule amount of food we were served. Service was just fine, though.
This hotel is not cheap, but the various deals offered make the adventure affordable. Check your bills: mine had double-charged the ski tickets and added a few hundred dollars. Bringing my receipts and proofs of purchase eased out the process of correcting any billing errors. I suggest you do the same.
Valet service comes at the price of 17$/night.
