“Best family snow experience possible!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2007

Our Florida-born kids (5 and 7) had never seen snow, so I booked a holiday weekend stay in Stowe, VT. I was looking for economy, and a place where I didn't have to rent a car and drive in snow--within walking distance of restaurants and attractions. I like the B & B experience, and Auberge de Stowe was economical.

Auberge de Stowe is right on the busy Mountain Road, which makes for some traffic nosie, but the free Mountain Road shuttle right across the street made everything (including the moutain and the village accessible--although Chantal did offer to loan us one of their vehicles if needed!!)

Our innkeepers, Shawn and Chantal, and their boys, made our snow experience so very, very warm. Seeing the Floridians poorly outfitted, they rounded up mittens. Learning we hadn't yet seen Sound of Music (and the von trapp family Stowe connection), Chantal rented the movie at the library. Finding out I love both rhubarb and ginger, she broke out a jar of her limited-production ginger/rhubarb jam. They provided sleds and sledding advice, dining suggestions, shuttle boarding tips, and bathing suits for the outdoor hot tub. In addition, we had many lively conversations. They made it feel like we were staying with friends. It was definitely family friendly.

The rooms are clean and cute. Breakfast was basic but delicious (breads and homemade jams, cereal and one warm dish each day -- cheesy eggs, rhubard/apple crisp).

We hope to visit again, perhaps in another season.

The price is not commensurate with the level of service provided. The rooms were clean and basic--certainly not above average or exceptional. Breakfast was chinsy. The common areas are in serious need of dusting. The hot tub was clean, functioning and well-maintained. Don't go over $50 per night.

This one baffles us. The title of the review is "Falls Short," but the reviewer never explains what we fall short of. He says the rooms were clean and basic, to which we reply, "Thank you!" That's our goal. In pricey Stowe, that's the niche we occupy: clean and basic. He also states that breakfast was "chinsy" [sic]. Breakfast was as advertised: a continental selection including croissants (when's the last time croissants were considered chintzy?) cereal, banana bread, and hard boiled eggs, not to mention all the coffee or tea and juice you can handle. Deluxe? Nope. But not chintzy. The hot tub was clean. Again, thanks. That's the way it should be. The reviewer states that the common areas were dusty, and maybe he was right. It's a big, old, sprawling place, with nooks and crannies everywhere, and we don't always succeed in trapping every single dust bunny. Sorry. Finally, the reviewer says "Don't go over $50 a night." In Stowe, this is laughable. It doesn't exist, so that's poor advice from someone who didn't do their homework, which may have led the reviewer to say that the value didn't match the price. On the contrary, our value matches perfectly our price here in Stowe. We're the most affordable B&B for miles around. Please check us out.
