I have friends and family visit often and always list this as a must do on a clear day. A fun drive up followed by a great little hike and views to die for. Pack sunscreen and watch for weather!

“What a view”
Reviewed June 14, 2013

Drive up is not for the feint-hearted - lots of hair-pin bends - might be less scary being the driver than the passenger. Short walk gives you views all the way to Lake Champlain

“Exciting side trip”
Reviewed May 31, 2013

The toll road to the too of Mount Mansfield is well worth it. Exciting, narrow mountain road, steep inclines, drops in temperatures. Views from the top are beautiful. Choice of walking trails for the casual and avid hiker. Bring water and a jacket for the cooler temperature at the top.

“Don't let the price, or the heights, scare you away”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

My family doesn't consider a trip to the Stowe/Smugglers' Notch area complete without a drive up the toll road. Yes, it is expensive, but it is so worth it. At the little shack at the bottom of the mountain, you receive a CD to listen to on the drive that details the history of the mountain, as well as a primer on the flora and fauna. It's fascinating to watch the vegetation change as you approach the top, all the while listening to the scientific reasons for the change.

The weather at the top will likely be cooler and windier than in the village below, so bring extra layers or a windbreaker, even on a warm day. In the summer, the bugs can be a bother -- bugspray is advised.

On a clear day, you can see all the way to Lake Champlain, and even New York beyond, and it is spectacular. Some of our most cherished family photos are on the boulders at the top.

Respect the endangered tundra species and stay in the designated areas. This mountaintop is a national treasure.

“A Ride to the Clouds”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

If you drive all the way to the top, you can walk out across the tundra on boardwalks, scramble up the rocks to the top, and look down on the clouds hanging over the valley. Beautiful. But stay on the path so you don't harm the tundra. It's very slow growing and among the last left in the US.
