Mountainside Resort At Stowe

These are rental-by-owner condos so I can imagine that some units are better than others. We stayed in A102. Let's let the details speak for themselves. When we checked in, we were given one key and a promise to deliver two more which of course never materialized. When we entered the condo, we found: Cheap carpeting covering a lumpy uneven floor; cracks and sags in the low ceilings; exposed sprinkler pipes in the front hallway and bedrooms; broken window in the kitchen; a lamp with a missing lightbulb; several empty wall shelves and hooks that must, at one time, have held decorations. All three bedrooms are so cramped there is barely room to walk and entering the main bedroom involves a mini-obstacle course to first open the door then gradually close it as you simultaneously sneak around to the other side. That view of Stowe Village that you see in the VRBO photos? When I rented, I realized it's not the view from the condo but I didn't expect that the view from the window in the main bedroom would extend approximately 5 feet to the steeply sloped ground underneath the upstairs deck. We refused to allow our kids in the cloudy hot tub. The town and the skiing were fun. By all means, come to Stowe, but stay somewhere else.

This is such a great place to stay in Stowe. Not only does it have the convenience of being on the main street of town (Mountainside Road), you can also enjoy a large indoor pool, hot tub, sauna, and game room. You can easily take the Stowe Mountain Shuttle & yes, for free to get around town and of course up to Mt. Mansfield for great skiing with a great ski school for the young ones!!! The 2 bedroom unit was great with a gas fireplace with a lot of comfortable living space for the whole family.

Room Tip: The resort does not have any elevators--some buildings/units have just a few stairs but IF you need...

The best thing about the Mountainside Resort is its location. The property is about halfway between Main Street and the ski area on the top of Mountain Road. There are many nearby restaurants, ranging from low-key, budget friendly (Rusty Nail, Piecasso) to more upscale fine-dining.

We stayed in a two bedroom that was located across from the building containing the indoor pool and game room. Although the unit was dated and could use some updating, it was comfortable, spacious, and clean. The kitchen was fully stocked and had everything you'd need for cooking / stocking most meals. There was a large private balcony that had great views. We enjoyed the indoor pool, although the temperature was very cold on a few of the days. The office stocked complimentary movies and board games that you could check out for free.

We've been to Stowe many times over the years and I'd definitely recommend this as a comfortable place to stay in a great location.

Where do I start? We rented a 3-bedroom unit, and paid about $300/night. We weren't expecting the Taj Mahal, but didn't want Calcutta, either. We were on the third floor, and there is no elevator - so beware if you have a bad back, a lot of luggage or a baby buggy. We entered the unit. As we looked around our little slice of heaven and got depressed, this really unpleasant smell hit our noses - musty and indefinable.

The bedrooms were ludicrously small. There was a "master suite" - oh, please. Just enough room to walk around the bed, but don't expect to put your suitcase in there. The other rooms were much worse - two twin beds in the second room and a double in the smallest room I've ever seen in a hotel. The beds were specially constructed of what appeared to the firmest material known to man - obviously the 50-Year Hotel Mattress Special was purchased. All the bedrooms were very dark -with 60 watt bulbs and tiny windows.

These windows turned out to be very important, as we had to open every single one of them to try to diminish the smell. I finally recognized it as bacterial, but we still couldn't determine the source. The galley-style kitchen was clean, and fairly well-appointed. We tried to call the front office to switch rooms, but the phone didn't work. We went down to try to talk to someone (it was about 6pm), but of course the office was shut for the night.

By 9pm, we figured out the smell was coming from the dirty carpet. So, off we went to the store to buy some CarpetFresh stuff, sprinkled it everywhere and then vacuumed (one was provided) like madmen. The windows were still opened everywhere and the temperature was dropping rapidly. We now had floral-scented bacteria stink. We started up the gas stove fireplace, and it smelled of natural gas and burning dust. After 5 minutes, we turned it off.

By 11pm, we were trying to sleep on our brick beds when one of us got up and traced the smell to a locked storage closet. No, not a body, but what we think was a nasty, dirty mop of some sort that had been used to clean the bathroom and kitchen floors. We had some anti-bacterial Handi-Wipes with us, and midnight found 3 adults on their hands and knees cleaning the floors with these wipes. It helped, but the odor was stronger than us. We gave up, retreating to the beds in our freezing tiny rooms, except for our one friend, who decided the sofa was better than the "coffin" room she had.

Most of the outlets didn't work, the bathrooms are in desperate needs of updating, the water takes at least 4 minutes of running before it gets hot and the shower heads have very low water pressure.

We couldn't wait to leave in the morning - which is when we discovered that this lovely establishment had put an $800 hold on one of our group's credit card. This was after they had already been paid $160 in advance! They said they always do this, and it would take 72 hours to be removed.

If you decide to stay here, ASK TO SEE THE ROOM FIRST!!! Maybe some of the rooms are nice and very different, but the 3 bedroom units seem to be the worst - tiny rooms, dark and dingy.

We are truly sorry that these guests experienced such a disappointing stay. When we are made aware of problems, we do our best to resolve them right away. We are also happy to move guests when we have a similar unit available. We have staff on duty after the office closes and our guest book details the number to contact to reach staff on-site. When reservations are made, we make the guests aware of the number of steps to a unit.

We want our guests to have a pleasant experience at our resort, and regret that we did not have an opportunity to rectify the problems they expereinced.

We rented a three-bedroom unit. The bedrooms are the tiniest I've seen. Just enough room for an adult to squeeze around the king bed in one room or queen in the second. No room except in the closet for suitcases. (There was enough shelving for clothing, though.) The mattresses were awful. Our bed was so hard we could only tolerate it once we put a comforter underneath us. A 30 dollar mattress topper would have solved this... The third bedroom was perhaps 6x7. It had two platform junior twins. When I called about the place, I specifically said we needed to put a crib in one bedroom. One could squeeze one in, but not shut the door! We adapted by taking the mattresses off and putting the crib on the platforms (solid but more elevated than I'd want!). The bathrooms were small and falling apart. Shower in one was too small for me (I'm 5 '3" and thin). Decor throughout very outdated and dark. Overall impression = dingy. The Christmas tree was still up (artificial, but c'mon, it was September!). Many of the outlets didn't work, or the plugs would fall out of them... yuck. Fortunately, there was a vacuum in the unit, because I noticed a toenail clipping under the dining table... along with a few crumbs. We did visit another (one-bedroom) unit that was much more modern and nicer. Seems there's a bit of luck of the draw at work, plus the units seem to be the same overall square footage, so a one-bedroom has much more space for the bedroom and living areas.

The appliances were fine. It was nice to have a dishwasher and the fridge was spotless.

It was good that there was an indoor pool. Our son loved it, but it seemed very cold to me. Location of property is good, just outside town and not far from several restaurants and shops.

We thought we were getting a good deal with this place, but wished we had spent a bit more to get something decent.

We are sorry to learn that these guests were very disappointed. We feel our unit descriptions are accurate and we certainly do not wish to disappoint guests. If we had been made aware of the items that proved to be disappointing, our staff would have done everything possible to alleviate the concerns of these guests. We encourage guests to let us know if anything needs attention and are always happy to respond to guests needs.

Stayed here for 3 days in Nov. Off season and snow on the mountains. The buildings are kind of dated, but they were getting a re-skinning while we were there. The condo we stayed in (K103 I believe-154535) was a 2 bdr mountain view with a huge balcony. Not fancy, but clean and homey. Very well equipped for the casual traveler.

Only had one problem. We checked in. It was quick and nice staff. After setting up in the condo, we realized that the heat did not work. Luckily an older gas stove was in the kitchen. I heated up the oven and opened the door. A low setting kept the place toasty. I informed the office the next morning. A tech was there by noon. He replaced a thermostat and all was good. Excellent service by the management company. I would stay here again if I'm in the area.
