“Unusual, surprising, very pleasant”
Reviewed August 3, 2012

Whatever we expected in a modestly priced motel room for 4 days of hiking in Stowe was greatly exceeded by the reality of this very agreeable, slightly-odd ball, place. It's owned by a passionate blue-water sailor; the hotel has its own small lake behind it where radio controlled sailboat enthusiasts (including the owner of the hotel) sail their ships and where a US Canada radio controlled sailors match will be held this week. There is something indefinable about this place that seems to make the staff, as well as the guests, very pleasant. It has an air of freedom, of politeness, of warmth. The rooms are large, simple, but well appointed, AND the internet works in the rooms. Breakfast is attentively served, modestly priced, and delicious. To top this report off, this hotel REALLY DOES have good coffee in the lobby 24 hours a day. This is a hotel to come back to again.

Room Tip: Any one passionate about sailing will be at home here!

We stayed at the Commodores Inn for several days recently with our dogs. First, the good:
1. The staff was friendly and always tried to be helpful.
2. The housekeeping staff was friendly and accommodating. The room was reasonably clean.
3. The cost was reasonable, especially for a pet friendly hotel.
4. The location is really good. Only a couple of minutes from the center of Stow, the restaurants and the hiking trails.
5. The towels in the room were reasonably thick and nice.
6. Breakfast was included with our room.
7. There was always coffee available in the lobby, and cookies or brownies in the evening.

Now, the not so good:
1. The room and the lobby were dated and a bit worn.
2. The breakfast buffet was so-so. I would not have paid to eat there. However, the fresh strawberries, french toast and carrot muffins were pretty good.
3. The grounds around the "lake" was covered in what appeared to be goose poop. The "lake was a small pond.

All in all, it was a pleasant experience and we would stay there again if in the area. For a pet friendly hotel, it is reasonably priced.

We spent 3 nights at the Commodores Inn. Yes, it is a bit dated, but very clean. The property is well maintained. I found it had a bed&Breakfast feel to it. There were 2 rocking chairs on the restaurant patio overlooking the pond which was a nice added touch. When we first walked into the lobby it looked life a giant living room. Comfortable couches, coffee table with magazines on it, fireplace and big screen TV. Very cozy. Off to one corner there was a table with 4 chairs, with a collection of puzzles, cards, and a couple board games. We played cards one night there instead of sitting around in our room. Free coffee, tea, juice, milk, etc. in the lobby area. Muffins and cookies served fresh everyday in the lobby as well. Homemade. Yes, folks...homemade!

Rooms: Spacious, clean, beds were comfy. I would have preferred if the sheet covering the mattress would have stayed on. The elastic to hold it in place was no more. Impeccable shower/bath. Looked new. The towels were old but clean and not stained. Again, giving it a B&B feel. Like you're staying in someone house. In the reviews i had read there was no hair dryer in the rooms. Awesome to know ahead of time. There was a fridge in the room, that's a plus for me.

Indoor and outdoor pool: salt water. No yukky chlorine. We enjoyed swimming in both. Game room: Pool table and a couple arcade game. Our teenagers were happy about that.

Upon checking in we were handed $6 voucher for the breakfast buffet served at the restaurant every morning. For those of you who have stayed at the Holiday Inn Express, same deal. Scrambled eggs, bread, bagel, english muffins, fruit, bacon, sausage, french toast, etc.

Not much of a fitness center, but we wouldn't have used it anyway. Location is great. Staff were friendly and helpful. Good rates for families on a budget.

Overall a very pleasant stay. In one word: Cozy.

We will return.

Room Tip: Bring a hair dryer if you need one.

My family spent the last week vacationing at the Commodore's Inn. We had an amazing time. The staff made us feel special and anticipated our every need. Watching the sail boats in the afternoon on their private lake was delightful! Their swimming pools and hot tubs were clean and clear and didn't have that nasty chorine smell.

just stayed 2 nights with my wife, daughter and 2 grandchildren in a room with 2 queens and a cot
that may sound a bit crowded but the room was big enough for all of us
we found the room to be clean and with plenty of towels (if it had been dirty we would have left)
i have read comments refering to the rooms as being a bit dated and its true but that isnt to say that it is in disrepair it is not
the only negative about the room would be that the beds are very low to the ground and could be a problem if you have limited mobility
we all agreed that it was a nice place and would return for another stay and you cant beat the breakfast buffet for $6.
also many quest did take advantage of the hotel being dog friendly

We go to Vermont every summer to visit my daughters. We usually stay in Waterbury at the Best Western. This year we couldn't find a dogsitter:(. So we went online to find a dog friendly hotel. We found the Commodore Inn in the lower village in Stowe.

We were a little leery after reading some negative reviews, but our fears were groundless. The hotel itself is in a good location in the lower village, near many attractions.

The hotel grounds are very well upkept, beautiful lawn, flowers, a pond, kayaks, and remote sailboat races! They even a a conveinent receptacle for dog waste.

The lobby is cosy and comfortable with a big screen TV, sofas, tables, and chairs. There is coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and juice available 24/7. They have cookies out every afternoon.

There is an indoor and outdoor pools. We used the indoor pool, it was a basic hotel pool and jacuzzi set up. We relaxed there with our grandchildren two afternoons.

The room we had was a king room on the first floor. The room itself was large with a king size bed, dresser, closet, two chairs, table, and refridgerator. The bathroom sink had a cracked basin and needs to be replaced, however the tub and shower and toilet looked new. The room was very clean but could use newer decor. It was looking very 80's or 90's.

The only disappointing things were no iron or ironing board and no hair dryer in the room. These were available at the front desk.

The staff I talked to were very pleasant, but the girl at the front desk was new and tried to be helpful but just didn't know too much about the area.

All in all we had a great stay and we will come here next year whether or not we have our dogs with us.

We stayed here for 2 nights on our tour of New England - check in was poor with a trainee on Reception with no supervision. After a long drive, we were sent to the wrong floor - luckily we'd left the cases in the car. The room was large, dark and dated but the bed was very large and comfortable - the shower cubicle was badly lit and the towels were hard. The restaurant only opened at weekends when we were there - bar food was available in a poorly-lit dining area. There is a porch area at the back overlooking a lake where you can sit and relax. It's a bit out of town but several attractions are within 10 miles.

We would not stay here again.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, we always appreciate the feedback.

I want to apologize that our new front desk agent had difficulty with your check in and rooming assignment. Unfortunately, even with our high standards of training and emphasis on customer service, new hires do get nervous and make mistakes every now and then. I can assure you that training is continual here and we work very hard to provide all our guests with the best experience possible.

I was glad to hear that you found our rooms to be large and our beds to be comfortable. As for the needed updates, we are continually doing renovations to areas that need attention.
We have recently begun remodeling our entire lounge and dining room areas and intend to make strides in improving our guests' experiences as the current economy will allow.

Warm Regards,

Karen Brown
