Stowe Motel & Snowdrift

I stayed here with my wife and 2 children for 3 nights between Christmas & New Year's. The hotel has a wide variety of rooms in several buildings on a large property, because it is really 2 hotels that have been combined. We booked last minute during this popular vacation week and were able to get a room with 2 Queen beds, bath, and mini-fridge in the Snowdrift Lodge, which has motel style rooms on 2 levels. The room was adequate, but a bit small for 4 people. At least we knew what to expect because the hotel web site is very useful. It has photos and descriptions of all the room types. The decor is dated, but the room was clean and the staff was very helpful whenever we needed a restaurant recommendation or other information. There is no restaurant on the property, but there are plenty to choose from nearby, and continental breakfast is served in a small area in one of the other buildings. Offerings included bagels, muffins, cereal, yogurt, and bananas. You help yourself and can eat there, or carry it back to your room. The bagels were above average and the rest was fine. The property is about 4 miles from the Stowe ski area. You can drive or catch a free shuttle from the road running past the hotel. As a base to use for skiing, the hotel was fine. The price was reasonable for a hotel close to the mountain during a peak vacaton week. We had freinds who booked a much larger room that included a living area, kitchenette, a fireplace, and 2 bedrooms. The decor was similar to ours - nothing too fancy, but adequate for a few nights stay, and the price is right. If you want to go upscale, try the Trapp Family Lodge, 2 miles away, which we visited for drinks one night. They have a restaurant and a lounge with piano music in a beautiful setting on a hill. That hotel was originally built by the von Trapps, the family made famous by the show The Sound of Music. They bought the property after escaping from Austria during WW II. It reminded them of their homeland. You can pretend to be Julie Andrews romping on the hillside there, or you can save some bucks, stay at the Stowe Motel, and just rent the DVD.

Accommodation was large, with a well equipped kitchen (ok, unused but had everything required had we chosen to do so!). The room had excellent views of the mountains and it's location made it convenient to visit the surrounding area - including a trip to Ben & Jerrys in Waterbury plus a Dog-carting (sledding in winter) trip in Lake Elmore which is highly recommended ([--------------]). Overall the reception staff were friendly and helpful. A good base.

I stayed at the Stowe Motel & Snowdrift in Stowe, VT for 5 days in July. When we arrived our 2 bedroom apt. was not ready as the previous occupants did ot leave on time. The Management was great about this and held onto some luggage so we could grocery shop while waiting, and they told us of side roads to take instead of staying on the main road. We also had the option of taking a larger apt. for the night and switching the next day.
The rooms we had were large and very clean and comfortable, but we were not aware there was a larger apartment above us in which the people stayed up all night and got up very early...did not make for a restful couple of nights. Also, if you plan on using the sofa as a bed, be aware that it is very uncomfortable as the mattress has springs that stab you while sleeping.
This property is acutally 2 hotels bought by one person so there are two pools (at 2 different temperatures) and lots of activities for all guests. The problem with the pool nearest us was it was actually at the far end of the property, so it was quiet a walk.
I would not stay here again only because of the distance to everything at the motel, but for a family looking for a place where their children will have lots of activities, this is the place for you.

We stayed 4 days. I can only tell good things about this place:
clean rooms, nice yard, jacuzzy, free mountaign bikes, heated pool, tennis court, continental breakfast.

Nice service. The rooms are not modern, but clean and more than decent.

The 5.5 miles bike path is right next to the hotel.

If you are into outdoors activities and you like some time away from the big cities, this is where you want to be.

We are coming back for second time, this time with another young couple.

I went there expecting a little bit of a run down hotel due to the fact that it was among the cheapest places in Stowe. Stayed 3 times last year at Green Mountain Inn and was generally not pleased. Found the Stowe Motel very nice. Everything exceeded expectations. Things which budget hotels skimp on were really nice. Continental breakfast had lots of variety of bagels, breads, fruit and cereal. Badminton nets were nice, rackets were not broken and birdies were new. Ping pong table and balls were nice, rackets need replaced. The pools were nice. The free bikes were a great addition. They were not old and delapadated but very nice multi speed bikes with a big variety of sizes and models. The rooms were as you see in the photos and very clean. The grounds were nice with lots of room to relax. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

We spent five nights in the Value Apt. (2 adults and 2 teenagers.) The apt was extremely clean and the bathroom and kitchen were updated with new cupboards, equipment, dishes, etc. The beds were very comfortable and plenty of pillows and blankets. I was glad to have thermostat heating rather than the wall units that you often get with older motels. The staff was very friendly. We decided to stay a 6th night but were unable to stay in the apt, so we took a superior room with 2 double beds. Very clean and nice; well furnished with a refrigerator.

Having always stayed in upscale resorts, we were a bit leary, but pleasantly surprised and quite happy.

The smell of wood stove was quite strong in the corridor, but that is because of the rooms that have those nearby. We did not mind.

The games room was clean and kept the kids happy with ping pong and pool. Not fancy, but did the trick.

The only drawback was the hot tub. The paint was peeling and it kind of looked a bit unappealing. The water was not hot, and getting to and from it in the outdoors was kind of a pain. Did it once and that was enough.

FYI, we thought that if there were more than 4 in the Value apt it could be a bit cramped as they would have to sleep on the sofa bed, and there was no room for anything else if it was opened up.

All in all, a good place to stay at reasonable prices. If you are looking for a resort, don't stay here, but if you just want a friendly, comfy and very clean place to hang your hat, it is a great spot.

I recently spent two nights in a "Superior Room" and was happy with the room and the service. The room was far from deluxe but it was clean and pleasant. The staff was very nice about letting us check out late (2pm). I would definitely stay here again.
