“Clean, basic place to rest your head.”
Reviewed June 20, 2011

Finding a cheap, decent place in Stowe can be difficult if you haven't planned ahead (which we hadn't). We obtained a room in the main building for just under $100 (taxes included) and were only there for one very brief evening. The hallways are tired, spare and pretty uninspiring. I was a bit concerned that the outside doors were not locked so anyone could enter the building.

We got back to our room at 2 a.m. and could hear a TV blaring as we walked down the hallway, it turned out to be the room next to ours...luckily it wasn't as loud sounding in our room and we were so exhausted it didn't keep us up. I'm sure if we had contacted the Innkeeper he would have handled it as he had been very helpful with everything else we asked about but we were just too tired ourselves to deal with it.

We were looking for a cheap room and the earlier reviews about the great breakfast is what got me to chose Northern Lights. While there was lots of food I was disappointed in the quality. I'm guessing the scrambled eggs were powdered, there was white texas-style french toast w/fake maple syrup, paper-thin bacon, sausage, coffee, tea, several juices, granola and tiny chocolate chip scones that tasted like a cookie with too much sugar. I would have liked to have had some yogurt with the granola, some fresh fruit....and real maple syrup.

If I needed a cheap room again, while I would try to sample another place, if I couldn't find anything I would go back again. Overall it is a cheap, clean, basic place to stay.

Hi RockingGiraffe,

Thanks you for taking the time to post your thoughts on the Lodge. We are new owners, and while we have performed many improvements and upgrades to the Lodge, we are aware that there are always things that can be improved even more, and your comments are very helpful in identifying those things.

We were disappointed to here that the breakfast did not meet your expectations. We actually pride ourselves very much on our breakfast and have received many compliments from guests about the quality and variety of the food. We assure you that we only use fresh ingredients, and we would never dream of allowing instant eggs, or instant anything for that matter, within 50 feet of our kitchen. Perhaps if you were here on a slower day, the bacon or eggs might have spent a little too long on the chaffing dishes and dried out a bit. We wish we had known that you were disappointed with the breakfast while you were here, because we absolutely would have offered to whip up something fresh. In the future, we will definitely make sure to keep a closer eye on the buffet on slower days at the Lodge to make sure everything stays fresh and meets our high standards.

We know how distracting it can be to have someone loud in the room next door. While we have been renovating our rooms over the last year, we have actually been blowing in sound proofing insulation between the guest room walls, so we are glad to here that it is helping and that you neighbor's TV didn't keep you up. We are also always glad to make a polite call to a room if someone is being a bit too loud and keeping other guests from a good nights sleep.

We also appreciate your feedback about the hallways. Hallway tend to take quite a beating up here during the winter season with ski's, boots, and salt, so keeping them looking their best is a neverending challenge. We actually just finished repainting and carpeting our first hallway this past week, and it is our goal to try to finish at least one more hallway in the next few weeks.

We are glad to hear that you would consider the Lodge for a future stay. Thanks again for your review and we hope to give you a really amazing stay on your next trip.

thanks again for choosing the Northern Lights Lodge

They innkeepers are so nice, but...cleanliness overall was sub-par and the dead plants around the pool just looked sad. I honestly think they are doing their best, but they need some extra staff. The parking lot was sort of cleared. The bathroom mirror was linty and we found a couple bottle caps under the bed. The pool was cold until it warmed up for a couple hours. And the heater sounded like a subway station- off and on roaring all night.

I think this is the perfect place to crash if you're just looking for that, but it isn't a hidden gem. Hopefully as time goes on, it will improve, but for now read the reviews which review this lodge glowingly with a grain of salt.

I visited Stowe for a PSIA Professional Skiing Instructors of America skiing event. Mainly picked the Northern Lights based on cost, as I was only looking for a place to rest my head for one night. I got more then I paid for! Inn keeper Michael meet me at the registration desk, he was very friendly and knowledgeable with the area. They upgrade my room to the main building which had a King size bed and plenty of room. The main building also housed the pool and spa, if I was still traveling with little ones they would have found the pool entertaining and fun as it is split by the hallway/walkway to the lobby and breakfast area by a bridge. My room included breakfast, which was served fast and hot. The breakfast chef Brian made me a combo breakfast of eggs bacon and waffles which helped me get through a day of skiing. Also available was fresh fruit and homemade muffins! Michael also shared with me his views on the environment and their plans for upgrading the lighting to low energy fluorescents and LED bulbs. I would recommend to anyone to stay at Northern Lights for 1 night or 7.

While at Northern Lights Lodge, we were very comfortable. Everything we needed was there and anytime we asked for something it was provided. Rooms were clean and well kept. Lodge is located within minutes of Stowe, perfect for first runs. food and hospitality was the best. Fresh meals prepared on site for the size and taste of those staying at the time.

First off, as others have stated the free morning breakfast here is kick butt, it's a great way to get in your carbs to get though your morning of skiing. Homemade muffins, pancakes, sausage, bacon, coffee, juice,,, in short - breakfast rocked!

The Lodge is a wonderful throwback to the 1950's with of course modernizations. It's clean, has an indoor pool, hot tub, sauna. It's very family oriented, clean, the owners are awesome, and the rooms have great heating systems. They also have a separate area of which is for owners who travel with their dogs - $20 more a night.

If you want a nice clean friendly and you're not looking for that fancy schmancy type hotel than Northern Lights Lodge is the place for you. You can't beat the price.

The place is old and dated, but mattresses and bedding are new and comfortable, so you can get a good night sleep there. The family-run operation was a bit overwhelmed with the holiday weekend ski crowd. The breakfast buffet was good, but where was the real Vermont maple syrup and no fresh fruit?
Another oddity was the lack of toilet paper. The chambermaid did not place a back-up roll in our room, so I had to go into the women's bathroom at 5:00am to redeploy a roll for my room. (Someone had already beaten to the men's room toilet paper.) Another guest we know had to ask at the front desk for another roll.
A big plus is that you are 1 mile to the lifts.
