Owner description: At the Trapp Family Lodge Outdoor Center the question isn’t what to do. The question is, where do you start? From sunrise to sunset, and in every season, there is an invigorating adventure or relaxing activity waiting for you at every turn. The Trapp Family Lodge is a 2,500 acre mecca for the outdoor and nature enthusiast. In the Winter there is cross country skiing, back country skiing and snowshoeing. In the Summer there is mountain biking, disc golf, hiking,Nordic walking and even concerts in our meadow. The lists go on and on for people of all ages!

Decades of watching The Sound of Music spurred me to visit the Trapp Lodge last week. I was in the area, and looking for potential places to spend Christmas. Although the exterior of the lodge looks as one would expect (vaguely Bavarian/Austrian) the interior was awful! It looks like it was renovated in the late 70s and not since! There are no cosy areas for interacting or having a drink, its more like a motel check in stand.

We wandered around the property a bit, and wanted to go for a hike. The outdoor center was very helpful, showed us a map, and promptly told up that it is $10 a person to walk on the property. I had a $20 in my pocket, produced it for payment, and was told "uh...tax is extra". We paid. The hike we selected was short - about 20 minutes - because they did not have guided hikes and I didn't want to be wandering around the wilderness alone. All in all, it felt like a rip.

There are hoards of elderly tour bus visitors. This is not a place for young families, there are too many charming options in the area - and its not like the rooms are a bargain.

Go up to the lodge and have their buffet breakfast - it was $20 each, but had a VERY wide variety of food in unlimited quantity - not an everyday thing, but a treat, followed by a wander round the Lodge or their Historic Tour (highly recommended).
A really good day out

Great story awesome views, neat way they farm the land, have hiking trails etc. however it's obvious the family is after one thing and that's money, after a large family made it to the USA with only 4 dollars you would think the lodge would cater to the "average" person. I'm sure if Maria was still around she would not agree with the outrageous cost. FYI the room cost is not all inclusive either, so if you want to go on the history tour you still have to pay $10.00. Non guests are $15.00. It was a great tour no doubt lots of good information, but they didn't give you a tour of the place at all it was more of a class. Our tour leader was very good and animated!! Beautiful location, worth hiking trails, maybe eating or drinking at brewery or bakery but stay somewhere else.

We are a Sound of Music family, having grown up on the Von Trapp story, so we were eager to see the lodge. There was nothing much to see. We were expected a lodge with a large fireplace, a place to relax and have a drink. Instead, there were just a few cramped spaces filled with bus tourists and a mediocre gift shop. The road up to the lodge was lovely though. Don't bother with the rest.

Stopped for lunch after our visit to the Cog Railway. Had a lovely lunch not overpriced. Wonderful views and scenery.
