I must say that I am uterly disappointed with my stay at the Von Trapp Lodge. My two sisters and I saved our hard earned money for over two years to go on our dream vacation at the lodge. Our fascination with The Sound Of Music led us to the Von Trapp Lodge because of its affiliation with the musical. The website for the lodge is absolutly misleading and a far cry from what the lodge really is.
To start, the conditions of lodge were more like a retirement home than a vacation. The building was so run down that my sisters' and I literally feared for our safety. The room was dirty, beat up, and the linens looked as old the lodge. Obviously, at $350 a night, we would expect to have clean sheets and towels. That was not the case, we had to INSIST that our towels and linens be changed, and even after our request, the dirty linens remained on the bed. We tried to overlook the filth and undesirable atmosphere because we were really excited about all of the different activities and amenities that were supposed to be provided. When we tried to attend all of the different classes and workshops, very few of them actually exsisted. And the few that did, charged an outrageous amount of money that was never mentioned on the wesbite. We would have asked for a free night but you couldn't pay us to go back! To sum it all up, the vacation was overpriced, dirty, run down, and the activities did not exsist! The Von Trapp Lodge charges way too much and gives way too little!

Hubby and I went here for a romantic weekend. We should have known better. "FAMILY LODGE" is clearly in the name. Oh well. We will know better next time.

Besides the screaming out of control children, the property was quite lovely. Service, was ok. Room was kind of drab and not the room we were told we were getting.

Food and service at restaurant was mediocre, waiting over 1 hour for our "reserved" table without an explanation was not so much fun. We wrote a letter to the management after our stay and they wrote back with an apology and a 10% off future stay, a slap in the face if you ask us.

Looks like a great place to have a family reunion and have your children run wild. The staff doesn't seem to mind.

The Lodge and its envorons are beautiful. Your expectations are set high upon arrival. However, the staff could do much better to communicate what is going on or where to find things. We found ourselves asking and being asked by other guests where to find things (like pools and playgrounds, about afternoon tea). Food is scarce (not even a place to buy a bottle of water) except for the lodge's expensive restaurants whose hours are a bit too rigid for families on vacation.

Noise-wise, one goes to the mountains to escape noise! We unfortunately stayed during the renovation of their fitness center (of which we were not notified at time of making our reservation) We were awakened at 6:45 am to the sound of major construction right across the road from our window. Now, we are usually early risers, but this was an unacceptable intrusion on vacation - especially at the high, full-price they charged under the circumstances. When I politely spoke to the manager at the front desk, she simple said "there is nothing I can do" - and offered nothing by way of apology or explanation or compensation. We departed more tired than we arrived! It is a shame, because the setting is beautiful!

I was apprehensive about staying here after reading the reviews. There is some truth to all the reviews:
1. Overpriced - though I got my room via priceline, rooms are overpriced. It really is a lodge - decor is old, peeling wallpaper in the bathroom and room is small with a small TV. On top of that is the $12 resort fee.
2. Noisy - could not believe how noisy it was. It's a wood building and you constantly hear doors being closed particularly when people slam them. You can also hear the fans in the bathroom being turned on.
3. Views are spectular but mind the balcony - it's not private but a wrap around unless you get a room in the new wing.
4. There is an unsettling undercurrent of commercialization here - every thing has a price tag.
5. The ground are nice and the outdoor adult pool is great.
6. I would recommend this more for families that I would couples as there are tons of kids everywhere which can make for a noisy environment.

Overall, I was disappointed in that I was expecting tranquility but found it noisy. The added resort fee also turned me off. But hey if you're a fan of the Von Trapps and have a family - this may the place for you.

Just returned from 3 days at Trapp--Aug 6-8 and was very pleasantly surprised by the great room and the location. Room was large with 2 queen beds and outside door opened to a private patio--and we were staying there per huge "discounter". To our surprise, just a few feet from our room was a lovely "adults only" pool that was empty most of the time, so it seemed like our own private pool! Huge Mozart concert and fireworks were held in the nearby Trapp "meadow", which we heard and saw for free from our patio. Wonderful hiking trails, and each day we took a "leisurely" hike to the Chapel on the hill that Werner Von Trapp built after his WWII experiences in Italy. Only drawback was that the meals were expensive, tea was free each day though, and we did find a fabulously inexpensive, delicious restaurant called McCarthys on the road to the village of Stowe, near the Cinemas.

Here is a letter I wrote to President von Trapp after our recent visit:
Dear President von Trapp,

My wife and 2 children spent August 5th and 6th in room 414. I don't know how you expect us to ever stay at Trapp again after giving us a room in which 2 of the beds are in a room with no windows and very strange dimensions - essentially a large, stuffy and poorly ventilated, claustrophobic closet. We were never told there was a room with no windows. This is one of the worst rooms I have ever had in 40 years of traveling. You should look at the room if you haven't seen it. Would you want to stay in it?

Also charging extra for air conditioning reflects being out of touch with the state of the hotel/motel industry in America today. Also charging for the morning newspapers irritates some people a lot while it saves/makes you very little. As you should know, even basic motels provide free morning newspapers now. A computer that only accesses the Trapp website also reflects how management is out of touch with what others are offering.

I realize that supply and demand drives everything and that you are mobbed during the foliage season, the Presidents week, and over the other main holiday weekends almost whatever service or rooms you provide. But in the summer, when you aren't booked solid, it is hard to get someone who had our experience to come back to the Lodge again. Our bill with lodging and meals and beverages and unusual hidden charges like the "resort fee" came to $1500 for 2 nights -- with 2 of the beds in a large closet with no windows. That is an awful value in a completely unacceptable room.

Sincerely,
--------
