“Great location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2012

We just returned from spending three nights at Trapp Family Lodge. This is not the type of place we would typically select to stay, however we had our two year old daughter with us and wanted a place that would provide her with plenty of opportunity to run around. We were very happy with our decision to stay here.

The rooms are fairly pricey for the level of luxury, however you are paying for incredible views. I doubt there one room with a bad view. The property surrounding the lodge is fabulous. We were able to hike, swim, use the playground, have a beer while looking out at the mountian-side.

The rooms and inside the lodge is dated and covered with Von Trapp photos. But we got exactly what we expected. The room was spacious and the bathrooms were updated. They provided the fridge as requested prior to our arrival. However the bed was very soft (I didn't mind) and bothered my husband's back quite a bit.

The downside was the lack of friendliness among staff. Every time we entered or exited the building the front desk staff made it a point to avert their eyes so not to speak with us. There was no "good evening", smile, or even a nod of the head. The woman in the small gift shop did not even acknowledge our existence. The only exception were the guys that stood at the front door - they were fairly friendly.

Also note that there are plenty of activities available for an extra charge. Many of which I understand, but $10/pp for a history tour of the grounds?! But kids 12 and under are a bargain at $5 ea. Some of the extra fees seemed a little excessive.

The other surprise was that the bakery was not open at 7:30 a.m. We wanted to stop there for breakfast as we were heading home but it was closed.

Thank you for reviewing your recent stay at Trapp Family Lodge. We are glad your and your family enjoyed swimming, hiking and overall relaxation at our resort. We sincerely apologize for the less than friendly demeanor you experienced from some of our employees. This is not typical and certainly not the way in which they are trained to interact with guests. This issue was brought to the attention of the Director of Lodging and Guest Services for follow up with them. We appreciate you letting us know our bellmen were outgoing and friendly as is expected of them. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to our resort again. Rebecca

Ok, we stayed here because of sentimental childhood memories of us all watching the Sound of Music as children and singing along. We love the movie and the story behind it.

Well, we were not disappointed. We stayed for the quirk factor and got some extra on top: great big rooms with a lovely mountain view, big swimming pool, great staff, nice food and the most amazing setting in beautiful grounds. The bed was super comfortable.

Cons: it looks a bit frayed here and there and could use a spruce up, very big hotel, has a resort feel, lots of families, food and beverage not cheap.

Pros: great views,nice hikes, pool,tennis etc .

If you want a super de luxe hotel, skip this but if you want to stay at a nice hotel reasonable priced with the quirk factor, come here.

I have always wanted to come here. On an annual friend camping trip to Vermont my friend & I decided to go one day early and treat ourselves. The location is spectacular. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The lodge is quite picturesque and breathtaking to look at. Our room was spacious with a balcony. However, the room does not look like it was upgraded since it was originally built. The carpet was a bit worn and stained, the lampshades were all torn and the bathroom plastic molded type counter and sink were scratched, cracked and stained. The mirror and bathroom fixtures were quite dated and and the worse for the wear. The tile grout needed replacing. In addition, the reading lamps near the beds must of had 200 watt lightbulbs in them. You could not even use them as they blinded you. It was a treat to have a balcony but somebodies toe nail clippings were all over the place. Ewww... The elevator is also quite dated and the carpet is filthy and stained. We only stayed one night but we took a walk when it got dark and the stars were so breathtaking at this location that it brought tears to my eyes. They were so brilliant, crisp clear and I have never seen the milky way to this extent. There were also many activities throughout the day. We did not participate but it looked like a lot to do, all for an additional charge of course..lol. We visited the Trapp Family cemetery on the grounds and it was lovely. The flowers were coffee table book worthy and the fragrance was divine. The food is very expensive here and we paid $4.44 for one small cup of regular coffee. The brewery was was very nice and the beer was quite tasty. I am a vegan and they were able to accommodate with making me a veggie sandwich...but the lettuce was all rotten. The rooms reminded me of a motel as far as quality and comfort. For the very high price I expected luxury. All in all, I was glad I made the visit. It was worth the experience. However, unless they are running a special for half the price or I hear they had an overhaul of the rooms, I would not come again. I do have to say...the hills ARE alive around here. Lovely location.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at our resort. We are delighted you experienced so much enjoyment from our grounds and the late summer night star gazing. We are in the process of refurbishing many of our Main Lodge rooms and your review has been brought to the attention of our Director of Lodging and Guest Services for his records and follow-up plan. There is no excuse for the litter of toe nail clippings you found on your balcony and this was immediately brought to the attention of our Housekeeping Department for review with staff to underline the importance of cleaning not just the room but the outside balconies and patios as well. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Rebecca

If I have my math correct this was my fifth stay at the Trapp Lodge, and each year we find the experience just outstanding. Rather than trying to convince you that this is a good place to vacation, I will just rattle off a few things that keep us coming back:

- The view of the valley from our room each morning
- John Cassell’s piano in the bar each evening
- The proximity to Stowe… close enough to shop & eat & play, far enough to feel you’re on your own mountain
- Sitting on the outdoor dining patio with a glass of wine, watching our kids run around with other kids they’ve met
- The genuine warmth of both the staff and the guests
- The room to roam, play, hike, relax

We did notice in-room dining has disappeared this year, and we think it should come back. Aside from that, we had yet another great visit over 4 days. We will return!

This was a great place to stretch our legs and explore on our road trip. We missed the tour but still enjoyed walking the grounds, taking in the vista and appreciating the architecture. We stopped by the bakery/deli for a cappucino and to buy a loaf of amazing bread.

We wanted to get away for a few days with our three children and decided to try Trapp Family Lodge. The setting is quite picturesque. Gorgeous views and miles and miles of trails to hike and bike. We got 2 adjoining rooms, which worked perfectly for our family of five. The rooms were very clean and quaintly decorated. We all slept so well in the feather topped cozy beds with big duvets. We had asked for a small refrigerator to be placed in our room for snacks and drinks and were quickly accommodated with one. The decor of the hotel truly makes you feel like you are in Austria with lots of Von Trapp history and photos all over.
Hotel staff was all incredibly friendly and helpful. We brought our bikes and were able to store them in a back room when we were not using them. My children loved the daily afternoon cookies and tea and also loved the campfire in the meadow. We enjoyed the indoor and outdoor pools as well as the fitness facility. All were very clean and well maintained. It was lovely to work out and take in the beautiful views of the green mountains.
We will definitely be back for another visit!

We stayed here one night so we could do some Vermont visiting. A good family friend of ours has a timeshare so we had heard about the resort for years, and so the time came for us to be able to book the lodge for one night.

It's in a gorgeous setting in the mountains, yet not too far from the Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Factory (great tour by the way). The room was a very good size, and led out to a shared balcony with a stunning view of the mountains (that is, when the rain cleared!). Beds were comfy, and there were no problems with shower pressure or anything.

The hotel does feel a bit dated though, and I can't explain why. It's got an old Austrian ski resort feel to it, with lots of use of wood, and stencils on the top of the walls in the room, but it felt more like the 80s when all that "country home" look was in. Predictably, the hallway was full of movie memorabilia for "The Sound of Music," but that contributed to feeling dated. I didn't get the feeling of elegance, but almost bordering on kitsch.

They do have a long list of activities, which is nice, and chocolates on the pillows - very nice. The restaurant was an excellent choice for dinner and breakfast (particularly loved the breakfast) and the service was friendly and efficient. The piano player at dinner was charming and fantastic.

The guest laundry facilities were broken though, which was disappointing (we had a very long road trip). There was no one available to fix them at 8pm and everyone was told they had to wait til morning. We didn't bother trying, given the long line of people ahead of us! Also, you can't use a luggage trolley yourself - stupid rules mean they have to do it for you if you want a trolley.

All in all a nice, but quirky in a good way, hotel.

Thank you for posting a review about our resort. Your constructive feedback is well taken and will be shared with our management. Our luggage trolleys are restricted to bellmen use only for liability reasons and we have in the past had guests who were less than careful with them and caused damage to doors and hallways as they tried to maneuver them into their rooms. Thank you for your many compliments of our location, views, amenities and our Main Dining Room offerings. We sincerely apologize that our guest laundry was out of order. This has since repaired. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We hope to welcome you as our guest again. Rebecca
