“Relaxing place to stay”
Reviewed July 18, 2012

Our family stayed here for 2 nights and found it to be a very relaxing place to visit. We stayed in a premier king room overlooking "Maria's pool" in the main lodge.which is a sprawling building. Room decor was very charming and clean. Fold out sofa bed was not very comfortable for our daughter-mattress was thin and could have used a plush mattress cover for the springs. Our king bed was OK. The TV was useless where it was located - the only place you could watch it was from the one chair in the room. Bathroom spacious but the handheld shower attachment was not able to be used-we were not able to get it to work (You can choose either to use the reg. shower head or this) Outdoor heated family swimming pool was very nice with plenty of lounge chairs. Buffet breakfast was very good with plenty of choices for all. We had an excellent waiter but noticed that another table had problems with their waitress. Pictures of the von Trapp family are all over the walls in the hallways, the rooms etc. Overall, a very nice place.

Thank you for posting a review of your recent stay at our resort. We are pleased that you enjoyed your visit and we thank you for your constructive input. We are very sorry the mattress in the sofa-bed in your accommodation was uncomfortable for your daughter. This has been reported to our Director of Lodging and Guest Services for follow-up and replacement. The problem with the hand-held shower head has been addressed by our Maintenance Department. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to our resort again. Rebecca

I have just had my second visit - one last winter and one this summer. Here are a few of my favorite things about the Trapp Family Lodge:

Clean, attractive rooms with balcony views over the valley, or peaceful terraces looking up to the woods.
Gorgeous location loaded with trails for outdoor activities and nature exploration.
Fascinating "Sound of Music" memorabilia lining the winding halls and public rooms.
Pub with delicious, Austrian-style food, fabulous Trapp Lager, and a delightful pianist who seems to be able to play any request!

I'll never turn down a chance to return.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your recent stay with us. We are glad you chose to experience two completely different seasons at our resort. Your description of the rooms with “views of the valley” or “peaceful terraces looking up to the woods” expresses two unique qualities of our property. Thank you for sharing this with our Trip Advisor followers. We are very proud of the programs we have for hiking, biking and nature tours that appeal to all ages and levels of fitness. Our on-site naturalist has developed a Jr. Naturalist program that is proving to be very popular with our young visitors who want to learn more about their surroundings while enjoying the fresh mountain air. We are glad you appreciate "The Sound of Music" memorabilia throughout the lodge. We now offer a History Tour that tells the actual story of the family and their escape from Austria; a story upon which the stage and screen versions are based and includes a wonderful documentary by Maria with the story told in her own words. Our Lounge in the Main Lodge will be very happy to learn how much you enjoyed the food, lager and John Cassel, our pianist who entertains five nights a week. We hope to welcome you back to our resort again! Rebecca

We have stayed at the Trapp Lodge a few times and have always loved it. The accomodations are very nice, service is amazing, love the Sound of Music memorabilia in the hallways. The breakfast is expensive but a terrific buffet. Hiking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking, fitness center...all are great. Be prepared in any season to walk across the street from the main lodge to get to the fitness center and large indoor pool, but it's not a big deal. Very popular for family gatherings, weddings, holiday meals.

Room Tip: In the summer in the mountains of Vermont you will probably still want air conditioning most nights.

We relaxed at the adult pool and enjoyed the fabulous concert and fireworks. We enjoyed learning about the von Trapp family from the history tour as well as the question and answer session with a family member. From the bakery to the outstanding dining room, we ate well and walked some of those meals off on the miles of trails and hikes. The views are breathtaking. The accomodations were luxurious and very, very comfortable. From check-in to check-out, the staff was friendly and helpful. We had a wonderful time.

Thank you for your review. We are delighted you took advantage of all we have to offer at our resort. The concert was magical with wonderful music, good weather and the fireworks finale - all while relaxing in the spectacular setting of our Concert Meadow. Thank you for letting us know you enjoyed the von Trapp History Tour and learned about the real story of the von Trapps and how they settled in Stowe, Vermont to eventually becoming a premier resort in New England. Your compliments will be shared with the family. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to Trapp Family Lodge again. Rebecca

This was our second year at the Trapp Lodge for the 4th of July week. We are hooked!!!

The hiking and mountain biking trails at the Trapp Lodge are out-of-this-world. Almost daily, I escaped to a 3-5 mile jog on their vast property of neatly groomed trails. My husband enjoyed the mountain biking trails. Many of the trails are under a canopy of mature forest, well-drained, well-trimmed (I'm paranoid of poison ivy) and well-marked. They are wide enough to walk side-by-side, yet are challenging! Several of my favorite loops had elevation gains of 400-500 ft! Leave the iPod behind and soak in the sounds, sights and smells of the forest. Oh, and don't forget a trek to the Cabin.

The indoor and outdoor pools and fitness center are also a highlight. Our kids are 7 and 11, swam daily and enjoyed many hours playing, while I lounged in a comfy chair reading a book. There was always enough room, plenty of towels (promptly refreshed) and always clean.

Our 7-year-old daughter loooves the mountain kids club and begged to go back every day, to hang out with her friends (many were also staying the week at a Guest House) where they rock climbed, hiked, met the cows, had picnics, made crafts, played games, etc. The teachers at the kids club were terrific (she remembered some from last year). My 11-year old son spent every spare moment fishing in the well-stocked pond, right next to one of the pools (I could see him from my lounge chair by the pool).

We met several Trapp family members (Johannes, Sam and Sam's sister - forgot her name ) during our stay at the 4th of July BBQ and the Family Fun Run. They clearly love their lodge and want to make sure you enjoy it too! We also enjoyed the fly fishing lesson, yoga, wine tasting, camp fire sing-a-longs with s'mores and the family movie night. There are many other activities offered, something for everyone! Service across the many facilities (fitness center, mountain kids club, brewery, main dining room, lounge, housekeeping, wine steward) is consistently attentive yet unobtrusive. Even the Outdoor Center was well-stocked with cool attire (mountain biking skirts!) and brands of clothing (Ibex) I cannot find in the usual chains in Michigan.

Last year we stayed in an Austria Suite at the Lodge, which was quite luxurious. On our last night, we watched the Vermont symphony orchestra from our balcony, complete with a fireworks finale to the 1812 Overture. This year we rented a Guest House, which we enjoyed even more. It was not as richly appointed, but was very comfortable and well suited for our family of four (2 bedrooms, 2 full baths, living room, dining room, kitchen, 2 balconies). While the rest of the country was baking in 100+ degree heat, we were comfortable in VT with moderates temps and the windows open (the Guest Houses are not air-conditioned). Parts of the Guest House seemed to have been very recently updated (brand new bedding and some of the other furnishings), while other parts were not. It was nice that we could park our car right in front, park our bicycles right at the side door to the house, a grill outside the door, and had space for 4 seats and table on the balcony to view the breathtaking sun rises and rainbows over the valley below. The dining table was large enough for 6, plus space to work on one of the large puzzles we found in one of the closets, a nice surprise!

If you love the outdoors and a little socializing with other families around the campfire, but want the comforts of a fluffy bed and an immaculate pool with good food and wine, then this is the place for you! We have already decided we are going back next year!

Room Tip: If you want high end luxury, rent a Villa or a Suite in the Lodge. Be sure to ask if your room in t...

Thank you for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review of your recent stay with us. We are delighted that you and your family enjoyed our hiking and biking trails and embraced being "offline" from phones, ipods, etc. while you did so. I recommend, during your visit next year, you take the bird watching tour with our on-site naturalist, Jan Axtell, who can point many of the 182 bird species on our property. We look forward to an opportunity to welcome you back to our resort. Rebecca

We spend the 3rd week of June in the Trapp Family Lodge guest houses every year and the stay has consistently been excellent. The fitness center is outstanding with a very helpful and attentive staff and top notch facilities. The pools (both indoor and outdoor) are always clean and well maintained as are the workout areas and locker rooms. The guest houses as well as the main lodge are spacious, clean and impeccably decorated in a charming quasi Austrian theme featuring lots of natural woods and motifs.

We usually eat at least 1 meal in the main dining room and the food is wonderful. Our one complaint over the past 2-3 years surrounds the changes in the bakery as many of what we would consider "signature" items such as the Black Forest Cake are of a substantially lower quality and made from different recipes. We used to order at least 1 cake during the week and now visit only to leave shaking our heads. The other breads and pastries are still quite good, although as we found it's probably a good idea to visit early as they don't usually stock enough to make past 9:00-10:00 am. The new brewery is quite nice and the beer is excellent as is the cafe.

There are quite a few summer activities to do while in Stowe apart from the swimming, tennis, frisbee golf, hiking and classes offered at Trapp. Hiking on Mt. Mansfield, Moss Glen Falls and the river trail downtown are all great experiences. Ben & Jerry's in Waterbury, Johnson Woolen Mills and Cabot Cheese are excellent side trips as is the Sheldon Museum. That said, it is entirely possible to spend the entire week at the Trapp Family Lodge without leaving and depart relaxed and satisfied.
