“Good but not great”
Reviewed March 23, 2014 via mobile

I stayed at TNR midweek for a work conference in Stowe. There were many things to like including the wood burning fireplace in the lobby, the swimming pool, and the delicious chocolate chip pancakes that I had for breakfast. I found the staff helpful if a little inexperienced.

But there is much room for improvement. In particular, the walls are thin and my sleep was disturbed by banging doors a couple of times; the bar scene is really non existent and shuts down at 9:30pm leaving no other options. While I think TNR works nicely for families, given the rates I would opt instead for the Stowe Mtn Lodge which gives the benefit of doorstep skiing.

It's like they built a hotel around a spa and forgot to address the basics like a soda and snack machine after the food shuts down around 9:30. The folks working there are not on their A game in terms of being knowledgeable about the area or solving customers' needs. The rooms are gorgeous with vaulted ceilings, but the walls are thin. My room had a connecting door with the next room that had a space under the door that let in their noise and smells.

Not a good value at all for the extreme price they charge, even in the off season.

Room Tip: Ask for one that faces Stowe ski resort.

We stayed at Top Notch for five nights and had a great time. Our request for an upgrade to the top floor for the view was given quickly on arrival when the original room did not have a view. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. We enjoyed drinking at the Roost and the small bites and light suppers were excellent. Wait staff very pleasant. Dining experience at the Flannel was mixed. Food not memorable for the price and experience was mixed. The Spa was great, both my husband and I had very good massages and the service was excellent. Wifi was patchy not always on. Not sure if it was because I had an iPad and iPhone. Channel options for HD viewing was limited. More movie channels would be great! overall a great stay! I would definitely visit again.

Room Tip: Third floor rooms have cathedral ceiling and face the mountain. Great view with afternoon sun and qu...

I should preface this by saying the hotel had just reopened after refurbishment when we stayed there.
Pros: my husband loved the tennis program - great pros and facilities. I also had one of the best massages in my life in the spa here.
Cons: Free wifi does not work for apple products! There should be a disclaimer for this! Redesigned hotel has an odd design - where you have to go past bedrooms to get from bar to restaurant/spa...? Food at restaurant appalling. The chicken in my salad had huge pieces of fat all over it (poor quality) and even the waitress was disgusted by it. I was also surprised that for a tennis resort, there was no tennis channel available! We missed Wimbledon whilst staying there! The rooms were also not quite finished - the mattress on our bed did not come all the way to the end of the base, resulting in a nasty bruise when I knocked my shin into it!
Considering this is ranked as one of the top hotels for tennis globally it was a big disappointment.

We had stayed at the TopNotch many years ago and were looking forward to the renovated facilities and new ownership. The visit was a disappointment as the hotel was over-priced given the level of service and attention to details that really make a difference in a hotel experience. There were several things that happened that are indicative of this. We arrived at about 11:00 pm with a family of 5 with a great deal of luggage. There was only one attendant at the front desk and he did not even offer a hand to unload the car or bring the bags and skis up to the room. That next morning we were awakened by a snow plow at 5:45 a.m.! Understand they need to clear the parking lot but this truck went bac and forth outside our window scarping the pavement for 15-20 minutes. So, all 5 of us in both rooms were up for the day. When we made dinner reservations at Flannel, the main restaurant, we could not get our desired time because it was full. When we arrived for our reservation, our preffered time would have been fine as the restaurant was substantially empty for almost an hour. Later that afternoon after skiing we went to the pool. They had no towels left. This is at the height of the winter break season and one would think they would anticipate this. Then again on the next morning, the same thing happened with the snow plow-at 5:30 a.m. we all awoke to the scraping of the plow and there wasn't any new snow, just rain and slush. Again, this went on for 15-20 minutes. On both occasions at lunch it took at least 10-15 minutes for a waiter to even acknowledge us and to take our order. Then, on both instances, the food took 45 minutes to an hour to arrive. The dining room was full and they had one chef. Again, this is the height of winter break and one would think they would be staffed accordingly. There were several other examples but i think you get the message and do not want to write too long of a review.

We went for a ski weekend. Stayed on 3 rd floor facing back drive-try to get out of this! They empty trash dragging barrels late eve and early am so any thought of a good nights sleep is just that , a thought.
PROS: vaulted ceiling create spacious feeling in the room. Room has a coffee maker, ice bucket with water and wine glasses, TV, and plenty of outlets. Beautiful mountain view from some areas, outdoor heated pool and hot tub. Comfy robes and slippers. Great, attentive staff happy to accommodate in any way.
CONS: adult outdoor pool and spa overrun with small children as was the indoor pool and hot tub so nowhere to go to enjoy any peace and quite for the $12/day resort fee. kids in the bar/ lounge area poorly attended and taking up bar chairs making adults wait .(what kind of parent would bring their kids to a bar?!!!) and overall pricing. At $500+ / day, I expected to sleep well, enjoy the amenities, and plan a return trip. No such luck on any count. The "Spa" is accessible for a minimum of $30 for a "treatment" in this case, a polish change that for my convenience includes a 20% gratuity. Frankly, if it's included, it's NOT a gratuity! Not to be rude but when did doing your job begin to require a "gratuity" ? tips are reserved for those who make less than minimum wage, ie: waiters/ waitresses. Not some one who is good at their job. but that's just my opinion.
We travelled with our 2 kids ages 18& 21.

Room Tip: Pick off the back road!

We rented one of the 3 bed outlook homes on the property.
The property itself was very good but they are semi-detached and the walls are paper thin!

The could hear the next door neighbours dog and young child screaming most of the time. When they eventually decided to care for their various family members the rental was very peaceful.

When you go ski-ing a good breakfast sets you up for the day, sadly the breakfast at the hotel was very disappointing with one member of staff who struggled to use the coffee machine.

The hotel could be a lot better, right now.... average and we would not return.
