“Couples Ski Trip”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2013

My husband and I just returned from a 3 day/2 night stay at Topnotch Resort and Spa. We had gone to Stowe with the intention of spending our time skiing at Stowe Mountain, however, freezing cold temperatures and less than ideal snow conditions meant that we spent most of our time at the resort rather than on the mountain. I am glad we choose such a wonderful place to stay! The staff at Topnotch is exceptional -- from booking the reservation to arranging immediate on-request shuttle transfers to/from the mountain -- we were consistently impressed with the resort staff. We were visiting during peak season so we were prepared to pay more but were disappointed that the high rate still meant getting a room with a view of a wall. However, the room was spacious and appeared recently updated with touches of "shabby chic" design.

The location of Topnotch it convenient to both the mountain and downtown Stowe but neither destination is walking distance. It is a bit isolated unto itself but given the extreme cold we weren't looking to venture out too much anyway.

During our stay we ate every meal at Norma's (the restaurant on site) and were never bored or disappointed by the selection. The menu is an interesting mix of local Vermont products (ie: yogurt from a local dairy farm and maple flavored aoili) and asian-inspired cuisine such as shrimp dumplings served over edamame puree -- delicious! The breakfast buffett was lackluster and we were much happier ordering off the menu. Reservations for dinner are definitely a must -- the restaurant is small and fills up quickly but we did notice numerous people placing "take out" orders to bring back to their hotel room so there are options if you don't want to wait.

We did take advantage of the spa while at Topnotch and our massages were wonderful. There are two areas where patrons can wait for their appointment -- one inside each of the respective women's and men's locker rooms and one main area where we choose to wait so that we could be together. This main area was right next to the swimming pool and we were disappointed that we could hear a lot of loud noises coming from the pool but that was a minor inconvenience given the bliss provided by our massages once we were taken downstairs.

We recently got married at the Topnotch. The elopement package appealed to us as a reality based decision based on the geographic challanges of family and friends since we have moved alot and our families have as well. We just wanted a relaxing few days and the simplicity that went along with our vows. Upon arrival nearly everybody on staff knew we were here for marriage and we were honestly treatly like some kind of royals. We were sincerly greeted every moment with genuine friendliness that it was apparent that they really like weddings here. The room was very large and beautifully furnished with flowers and candies, and even a card from the staff. I asked the front end manager Carol for additonal flowers and she was able to provide them from a local florist within 20-30 minutes, amazing. The wedding coordinator Rachel, came immediately to our room to make sure we were all understanding the plans, and to ask us for anything extra that we may want. Since the inn is under renovation, which is not really that bad, she arranged for the wedding to take place at a private home above the inn. I requested some heaters for outside and she had the staff dig them out of the storage area and place them on our beautiful deck. She did an amazing job compensating for the changes to the inn, and nothing was ever an issue. Our requests were treated with high priority, so I can tell anyone interested in making something as important as a wedding go off well, that they definitely have your best interests there. Carol is an amazingly nice and competent front end manager, and we see how all people involved with the wedding listen carefully and respond promptly to her requests. We came back to the room to find a beautiful rose pathway around the room. We have been there many times, and they are even better at weddings that could be expected. Also waiter named Ryan, outstanding, at his job.

Room Tip: renovations underway. rooms will be renovated. but they are still very good.

Stayed for 5 nights and still wish we were there. The view is amazing and the service was over the top. The food is excellent(and I am a foodie) but can get pricey at dinnertime. The staff went out of their way to offer help and we were pleasantly surprised. Good location relative to slopes and cross country skiing and tennis are very nearby. Once the construction is complete I imagine the resort will be even better.

Stowe is a beautiful and great place to go during the holidays. Unfortunately our stay was pretty much ruined by this hotel. If it wasnt for the nice staff I would have given this place a terrible rating. The staff was great but the rooms were extremely outdated and there was not even good internet access. If you could get on you would be booted out within 5 minutes. Our room was on the first floor where we would listen to snow plows and staff joking around all morning not to mention constantly listening to other guests through there thin walls. It is by far the noisiest hotel we have ever stayed at! The food was good but room service took over an hour and the order was never correct. We tried to pick the most expensive hotel in stowe thinking we would get the best experience. It is too bad the place has so much potential and the staff were great it just isnt worth the three thousand plus we shelled out!!!!

Room Tip: Do not get a room on the same side as the entrance you will never sleep!

Hotel staff and services were excellent. Car service to/from Spruce base camp provided for a hassle free day of skiing and accommodates different family members schedules. Indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs were an excellent way of ending a day of skiing. We had an outstanding family get away!

Presently staying in an Overlook 3-bedroom house.

Pros:
- Easy drive to skiing

- Resort house is very nice and comes with a good kitchen with dishwasher, garbage disposal, plates, bowls, glasses, and silverware.

- Resort house comfortably accommodates my family of five.

- Housekeeping is very good.

Cons:
- Communication prior to arrival was nonexistent, except for the email confirmation.

- Emailed confirmation did not detail what was included in the price (ie, breakfast & spas were added on but never detailed)

- Upon check-in, what was included in the price was never explained.

- To say that services are uninterrupted through ongoing construction is to view the providing of services from a provider's point of view rather than a guest's point of view. The absence of self-service parking is absolutely an interruption in service and free valet parking does little to alleviate the inconvenience.

- The resort makes it sound like transportation to & from the ski slopes is very convenient. It's convenient only if you drive. The bus does not come up onto resort property, requiring guests to walk down the hill to Mountain Road to get the bus.

- the resort claimed to have shuttle service to & from the spa and resort homes. When I asked about this service, I was told to allow plenty of lead time on the transportation request because so many people were taking advantage of the service. When spending $1,500+ per night, I feel I should get prompt service.

Overall, the house is a nice house. The location of the resort is good and the presence of kitchen & laundry facilities in the house make the house very attractive and housekeeping does a good job while we are out skiing. But we won't be using the spa even though we paid in advance for four visits because the spa closes early (7pm) and we would either have to walk from the house or valet park the car. And it sounds like spa visits really need to be booked far in advance as well. If I had to do it all over again, I would not add on ANY services, especially while construction is taking place.

In summary, the house is good, location is good; other services, including communications, are either not good or very difficult to access.

May be one of the best places to stay in Stowe, but overall the resort has not lived up to my expectations.

Grade: B-

The rooms are very nice, but the Spa and the Restaurant are absolutely fantastic! I stayed for 4 days and ate at their restaurant for every meal (I rarely eat in the hotels I stay at).
And the Spa is amazing. They bring new meaning to the term relaxing. The entire staff was over the top friendly. But I cannot stop thinking about the food!
