My husband and I just returned from a 3 day/2 night stay at Topnotch Resort and Spa. We had gone to Stowe with the intention of spending our time skiing at Stowe Mountain, however, freezing cold temperatures and less than ideal snow conditions meant that we spent most of our time at the resort rather than on the mountain. I am glad we choose such a wonderful place to stay! The staff at Topnotch is exceptional -- from booking the reservation to arranging immediate on-request shuttle transfers to/from the mountain -- we were consistently impressed with the resort staff. We were visiting during peak season so we were prepared to pay more but were disappointed that the high rate still meant getting a room with a view of a wall. However, the room was spacious and appeared recently updated with touches of "shabby chic" design.
The location of Topnotch it convenient to both the mountain and downtown Stowe but neither destination is walking distance. It is a bit isolated unto itself but given the extreme cold we weren't looking to venture out too much anyway.
During our stay we ate every meal at Norma's (the restaurant on site) and were never bored or disappointed by the selection. The menu is an interesting mix of local Vermont products (ie: yogurt from a local dairy farm and maple flavored aoili) and asian-inspired cuisine such as shrimp dumplings served over edamame puree -- delicious! The breakfast buffett was lackluster and we were much happier ordering off the menu. Reservations for dinner are definitely a must -- the restaurant is small and fills up quickly but we did notice numerous people placing "take out" orders to bring back to their hotel room so there are options if you don't want to wait.
We did take advantage of the spa while at Topnotch and our massages were wonderful. There are two areas where patrons can wait for their appointment -- one inside each of the respective women's and men's locker rooms and one main area where we choose to wait so that we could be together. This main area was right next to the swimming pool and we were disappointed that we could hear a lot of loud noises coming from the pool but that was a minor inconvenience given the bliss provided by our massages once we were taken downstairs.
