My husband and I just returned from our elopement at Hartness House Inn. We were ensconced in the James Hartness suite which was quite a comfortable two room area--very spacious, very clean. The inn is beautiful and it was decorated for Christmas--the pictures on the web site really do not do it justice. The Innkeepers were friendly, helpful and just downright neighbourly. The ceremony was held in the library by the fireplace and our JP was a warm and exceptional man who made our nuptials memorable. We were quite pleasantly surprised at how smoothly everything went--it was magical.
We had breakfast and dinner in the inn's restaurant and the food was up to par with some of the better restaurants in NYC and the presentation quite lovely. The next morning breakfast was brought to our room. We even took a tour of the underground tunnel and telescope museum. Springfield is a quiet little hamlet--so if you're looking for peace and quiet this is the place to be. We walked to town, had coffee in a cafe, stopped by an art gallery, visited the old cemetery, took in a game of bowling and hung out just like the locals. There is also a movie theater previewing some of the latest flicks. If you want a little more night life or other entertainment Ludlow, Vt is only a 20 min. drive away for sport enthusiasts and the like. The house is really quite extraordinary. We really appreciated the idea of a larger B&B which offered a little more hotel atmosphere while still retaining its charm. We were very happy with our accommodations, the service and ambience...a really wonderful start to our new life together.

No maid service, no hot water (you have to wait 10 mins. before the water is hot - no water pressure either).

Heat in rooms is awful - either toooooo hot or freezing.

Beds hard as a rock

Owners ignore phone calls

We stayed this past weekend to attend a wedding. First the town of springfield had nothing, I was lucky to get a Twinkie at9pm at the only thing open, the gas station.
The Inn from afar looked okay as we drove up. then you see everything up close the flowers beds had foot long weeds growing up through mulch strewn everywhere trying to cover it. The grounds grass was all crab grass, unmown, gazebo looked the the Addams Family house covered in cob webs.Waterfountains inoperable and broken pieces lying all over the ground, Front step cement pieces loose and wobbling as you walked. Paint peeleing everywhere. Inside is timely for the age of this house, I just didn't expect for most of the oringinal furnishings to still be in use. Faded Worn etc. Staff was somewhat rude. We asked for extra dinner rolls at the reception and were curtly told THERE AREN'T Any LEFT!!. The food was probably better at the gas station where I got my Twinkie. The Salad was the best part of the meal, The Prime Rib (I think that's what is was) I should have used to resole my shoes, Tough was an understatement. Breakfast the next morning wasn't any better. there was about 25 -30 people from the wedding staying the night. breakfast was included in the rate. Guess what only 1 waitress to serve the whole dining room. 20 minutes for coffee, 20 minutes to order 30 more minutes for the food to arrive. greasy bacon, runny eggs, home fries that had more salt than the atlantic ocean. My best recommendation for this place ...SLEEP IN YOUR CAR

We spent one night here and felt that it was a ltitle overpriced for the rooms which were pretty standard. I had expected something more unique from such an historic inn. However, the history of the inn made it fascinating and we were given a tour of the underground rooms and the telescope in the morning.

We enjoyed drinks and dessert in the dining room in the evening and the ful breakfast was wonderful.

The book of hotel info in the room was outdated with incorrect pricing for meals and incorrect information regarding scheduling tours.

Some of the staff were standoffish and a bit snooty, while others were quite friendly.

We did not stay overnight at the B&B but we ate at the restaurant on Saturday, 2/18/2006. We were looking for a nice, relaxed dinner with good food. It was President's Day weekend and we were expecting things to be busy, but we should've been suspicious when we got a reservation at the Hartness House with no problem. Overall, the experience was disappointing—the place purports itself to be a classy establishment, but it needs some polishing. When we arrived, we were told to hang up our own coats at an open closet down the hallway. It took several minutes to get seated, even though there were empty tables and only a handful were occupied with dinner guests. Our server was one of the slowest I’ve ever had—it took a full TWO HOURS to eat dinner there. I really don’t mind a slower pace (we visit Vermont frequently for this reason), but this was ridiculous. We were left to sit with dirty dishes for 20 minutes between courses, and it was impossible to get the server’s attention. The shrimp cocktail was overcooked, but otherwise the meal was satisfactory but nothing special. They play cheesy muzak during dinner (emphasis on Andrew Lloyd Weber tunes) and the decorations were rather hideous—fake flowers on the table, cheap mass-manufactured tapestries on the walls (like those from Lilian Vernon catalogs) and very dusty swags above the windows. We happened to be there on the coldest day of the winter thus far (temps were in the teens with a severe wind chill) but the fireplace in the dining room was not lit, as we were hoping it would be. We will not be returning to Hartness House again—it’s overpriced and pretentious with no substance.
