When you think about the major ski resorts in southern Vermont, Stratton Mountain is an obvious choice. But if you are looking for a groomed, well marked x-country trail system - try Stratton. The trails are primarily in wooded areas and very scenic - hard to believe that not too far off thousands are careening downhill on skis and snowboards! Located near the Sun Bowl Lodge, the x-country center is manned by some great women (the day we visited) who were knowledgeable, friendly, made recommendations for trails and even offered us some wax when the snow started to stick to our skis. The center is cozy and rustic, heated by a wood burning stove. Rentals and lessons are available. The day we visited they also had complementary hot apple cider . The x-country center only offers water and other drinks and small snacks. But you can take an easy trek to the Sun Bowl Lodge to enjoy a warm soup or other heartier food.
