“Way too much hype!”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

Friends of ours have always " hyped" Al's as the place to go for a great burger and even better fries. Based on our experience, we would have to take exception to those claims. Burgers were small with very little flavor served on what seemed to be day old rolls. They seemed more like sliders than real life size burgers. Just a tad bigger than a White Castle burger. Fries were average to say the best. The malt vinegar added some flavor to them. Service? More like an assembly line process. Get in line, place your order with the cashier then move into the next line so that you can pick up your order when completed. Make sure you know what toppings and condiments you want or else the " burger Nazi" will look at you like you're stupid. By no means am I a fan of fast food burger chains but in this case I would opt for a decent size moist and favorable Wendy's burger and fries before going back to Al's.

“You want a great basic burger and frys, this is the place.”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

A Burlington area institution. Serves very tasty burgers, milkshakes, hot dogs, philly steak and cheese steak sandwiches and, of course, great french frys (as Als calls them). Clean and bright decor, bit of a throwback to 1950s diner/drive-ins. Lines may look long, but move fast and you can usually get a table even when crowded. Some outdoor tables and large playground for kids in summer. Great creemee (soft-serve ice cream) window in warm weather. They finally are taking credit cards.

“They finally take plastic payment.”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

For at least the 15 years that we've lived in Burlington, Al's has only taken cash. I can't count how many many times we went somewhere else because we didn't have cash in our wallet. Plenty of plastic but no cash. Well Al's has entered the modern world and they now accept plastic as a form of payment. So read Steve C.'s and Nachtswerg reviews, they hit it on the spot. Al's does too.

“A Burlington institution”
Reviewed January 5, 2013

Al's was fast food in Burlington well before the invasion of McDonalds and Burger King--and has survived and thrived by being better. Locally regarded as the world's best fries, and of course you have to sprinkle vinegar on them.

“Carb Kingdom”
Reviewed December 22, 2012 via mobile

Al's is a snackbar is the most wonderful sense. An institution on busy Williston Rd. in South Burlington, Vt for well over 4 decades. They serve all the standard; burgers, hot dogs, corn dogs, chicken sandwiches, and more. However, it's the fries (or frys as the sign says) that makes them a multi-generational dining spot. Crisp, brown, and hot little spud heaven served with ketchup or gravy!

Al's is amazingly fast, resembling the best philly steak joints down in the city of brotherly love. In some ways, you hope there's a slight line, just so you can decide what you want offof their diverse menu. There is no table service, but I dont I've ever heard the patrons complaining. Heck, watching the dance of the cooks just beyond the cash register is part of the fun!
