The day we went it was raining outside, so it worked to do the self-guided tour. The building was very odd - I felt like I should have been high walking in. Bright colors, odd figures in paintings, etc. It was fun, though. We took the self-guided tour and got to see beer being bottled. We tried 4 beers - we can only get Circus Boy and #9 in PA so it was enjoyable trying the other flavors. I was bummed the flavors we liked the best (honey wheat and Pilsner) were not available to purchase in the gift shop since they were out (it is brewed in the building - how can you be out?) We went to the grocery store to buy it, and they were out, too! I wanted to buy beer from them, but was unable. This is a fun tour to take on a rainy day and the parking is free (unlike so much in Burlington).

Our 'tour guide' (Peter) seemed extremely put off that he was made to leave his lucrative stool manning the check-out counter of the gift shop to lead a bunch of random people on the "tour".

Want to know what makes Magic Hat special -- not possible here. The tour consists of a walk down some hallways where old Halloween stuff has been collected, then a 'video' that is just generic for how to make beer in general. The actual 'tour' of the facility lasts 2-3 minutes as you stand on a viewing platform and look down on the un-staffed brew area. Which, is kind of crowded and not particularly tidy, so I guess not at all suitable for 'tours'.

Most of the tour is the gift shop with the usual assortment of branded clothing and beer paraphernalia.

We did the self guided tour-- but it is like the magical mystery tour. You visit and overlook the processing and bottling and view ecliptic art along the way. The tasting at the end is 4 shots of beer of your choice-- you may just end up buying a 64oz jug of beer to take home. When sampling the beer you are part of the fun crowd --- Definitely worth the visit if you like beer!

We went to the Magic Hat on Saturday, when there were no workers. The "tour" started with a lot of half-funny jokes, followed by a video on how the company started. The video reminded me of the video they showed on Jurassic Park when they were explaining how they got their dinosaurs (same voice and demonstrations). After the video, we walked out onto the viewing platform that overlooked the factory floor. The tour leader asked if anyone had questions - when no one did, he said he would see us at the bar and left. We were left to look down on silent machinery and wonder what thing performed what function. There were samples given out at the bar and the company does good community events (there was a fundraising auction going on), so kudos for their sense of social responsibility. But don't expect to learn much about how they brew their beer.

After lunch at Al's in South Burlington my sister suggested a tour of Magic Hat. We arrived at 2:30 and the next tour was at 3, so we spent some time touring their gift shop and sampling some of their brews. They give you a card with four spots and you can sample four different varieties. I liked the #9 and Elder Betty but the dark brew was bitter and nasty. Our tour guide was friendly and informed us that she had no idea how #9 received its name. We watched a video that gave a brief history of the company and how beer is made. While you could view the brewery through large glass windows it didn't seem to be active during our visit. The beers available in the gift shop were limited. There was a variety 12 pack but after not enjoying some of the samples at the bar I was reluctant to buy a variety pack. When we stopped for groceries on the way home I did buy a 12 pack of #9. It was an interesting visit,
