“Brewery tour was a joke!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 25, 2013

We went to the Magic Hat on Saturday, when there were no workers. The "tour" started with a lot of half-funny jokes, followed by a video on how the company started. The video reminded me of the video they showed on Jurassic Park when they were explaining how they got their dinosaurs (same voice and demonstrations). After the video, we walked out onto the viewing platform that overlooked the factory floor. The tour leader asked if anyone had questions - when no one did, he said he would see us at the bar and left. We were left to look down on silent machinery and wonder what thing performed what function. There were samples given out at the bar and the company does good community events (there was a fundraising auction going on), so kudos for their sense of social responsibility. But don't expect to learn much about how they brew their beer.

“a funky brew place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2013

After lunch at Al's in South Burlington my sister suggested a tour of Magic Hat. We arrived at 2:30 and the next tour was at 3, so we spent some time touring their gift shop and sampling some of their brews. They give you a card with four spots and you can sample four different varieties. I liked the #9 and Elder Betty but the dark brew was bitter and nasty. Our tour guide was friendly and informed us that she had no idea how #9 received its name. We watched a video that gave a brief history of the company and how beer is made. While you could view the brewery through large glass windows it didn't seem to be active during our visit. The beers available in the gift shop were limited. There was a variety 12 pack but after not enjoying some of the samples at the bar I was reluctant to buy a variety pack. When we stopped for groceries on the way home I did buy a 12 pack of #9. It was an interesting visit,

“A worthwhile stop if you like beer”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2013 via mobile

If you like beer, any brewery is worth the visit and this place is no exception. You can sample the staples in the Magic Hat roster and a few others but not a whole lot more. I was hoping to find more special beers at the brewery to no avail. The gift shop was good but apart from growlers, there is a very limited selection other that the variety pack you find in grocery store and Magic Hat staple #9.

“Great place to stop and browse”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 8, 2013

Taste any four brews for free, or stand at the bar and have a tall one. You can do a self-guided tour anytime at no charge, or wait for a guided one of the brewery. Lots of fun products in the gift shop/tasting room!

“Not a big fan of MH, but did like Elder Betty”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2013

We visited during the 2nd week of July, and was surprised that there were not many people visiting this afternoon. As you open your car doors, you get the very strong scent of hops cooking, er rather fermenting to make the beers of the day that they were making. The brewery is housed in a renovated warehouse with a very large front door. You will walk into a large room, that houses the cashier on the very left, followed by racks of tee shirts that they sell, which then lead up to the stairway that must be taken to take the self guided tour. To the right of these stairs are the lavatories, and then comes the very wide bar which is hosted by a minimum of at least 2 bar servers. Further to the right, is the stairway that ends the factory tour. Further to the right is some of their stem ware and other libation holders. In the middle of the floor are displays of their available summer stock for sale, along with more clothing merchandise. I am not a fan of #9 or Circus Boy, but the ladies and myself totally enjoyed the Elder Betty that we sampled. They allow you to have 4 samples, but if you go with a friend, you should each get different blends so that each can sample more than the standard 4.
