“Dissapointing and Scary”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2006

Room was quite used and abused. Carpets were shedding and displaying rips.

Whole hallways were in construction mode. Spooky hallway with room doors left open with rooms in various stages of reconstruction.

I specifically asked if rooms had wireless access. Once in room I could not access. Called front desk - response was that wireless sometimes did not work.

Requested room switch to be closer to wireless antenna. Room change occurred with no improvement in access. I was finally told that I could access web from the lobby.

Well lets see where should I start.
My wife and 1 yr old and I traveled to burlington for the weekend as we do quite often. I saw a good deal on the net for $66 and the reviews weren't so bad.

BAD POINTS:
1) the heater sounded like an airplane so we shut it off and were cold the whole time. I'm guessing it's been there since that hotel opened some 20-30 years ago.
2) The walls are very thin. Plus the people upstairs were jumping up and down making so much noise. When we contacted the front desk, the girl said "casually" that she'll call them. That didn't do anything. We didn't sleep the whole night.

GOOD POINTS:
NONE
This hotel deserves a 1 and half star and that's pushing it.
If you have to go to Burlington do stay at Hawthorne suites ($80-90) or Comfort INN Williston ($65-75) . You'll thank me later.

We stayed here for a ski trip the last week of December, 2005. The cleanliness of the room was far below average. The bathrooms in the pool area were absolutely disgusting (the pool itself was nice). There were teenagers drinking and smoking in the saunas. There was duct tape holding room numbers on the doors. The continental breakfast was so unappetizing, that I, a pregnant woman, went without breakfast. The hallways were dark and uninviting with bare wires hanging from missing ceiling tiles. Our reservation was for two nights but we could only bear one and checked out early. Their rates are average for the area, so it would be easy to do better!

We stayed at the Howard Johnson South Burlington the first weekend in November. It was easy to find and the price was unbeatable for the amenities offered. The staff was efficient and the hotel clearly maintained certain standards. The rooms were adequately (though not optimally) clean, and the noise level was low. The pool area and exercise room seemed well maintained, and there was a restaurant conveniently located next door. This hotel was a very short drive to all of Burlington's main attractions, and on a very central thoroughfare. There are only a few criticisms: 1. the couch in our room was stained beyond reason. It was unsightly and marred an otherwise well-presented room. The linen was for the most part clean (we never trust the top blanket, and the HoJo's was no exception), but not of the best quality. The lock on the bathroom door was broken, and the heater made a very audible whining noise at times. These problems were noticable, but not overwhelming. The hotel over all was what we expected, not too nice, but not bad. There were many cheaper roadside motel options, but none appeared as inviting or well kept as the Howard Johnson. Comparably equipped hotels in the area were in general commanding a higher rate. All in all, it is a good deal for the none-too-picky budget traveler. Someone who wants a modicum of comfort at a reasonable rate.

Very nice hotel, situated on the main road 10 minutes drive from the centre of Burlington. Although on the main road it is set back and the rooms view to the side so road noise was barely audible and certainly not intrusive. Large room, pool, free internet access in room and WiFi in lobby with a computer for those without their own. Breakfast (continental) included in rate. Nice resturant next door (closed Sunday). Small fitness room with five aerobic machines.

Would recomend highly to those who do not need to be within walking distance of downtown.

I was off to a bad start with this place when I found out how far from the center of Burlington it's located, not walkable. Things got worse when they clipped me for a $10 phone deposit at the front desk - something I associate with cheap hotels with rowdy customers. It didn't help that Rt. 7 in front of the place is under construction.

But then I got to the room and found it to be truly upscale. It was more like a suite with couch and upholstered chair, extremely clean and clean smelling and amenities from an in room coffee maker to soap and shampoo.

This hotel is in a complex with two other hotels and each is huge.A several acre parking occupies the ground between them. Most rooms have a view of the parking lot. The feeling is more of an apartment complex than a hotel environment. I was there in August and the Howard Johnson's was overrun with families with kids. Good family place, I guess, but you couldn't turn around without a screaming 8-year-old running over your shoes. There's an indoor pool, it looked nice, but was churning with kiddies for two days straight so I didn't use it. One free internet terminal in the lobby, but it was often occupied.

I guess this is a good spot for suburban families who want a sterile, immense and well-decorated spot that reminds them of the sterile, immense and well-decorated neighborhoods from which they come.

A good restaurant - good food but shaky service - is conveniently right next door, and if you walk, a stroll down a nearby road takes you to shady neighborhoods right by the shore of Lake Champlain. Could be a delightful place for some folks, but not quite my cup of tea. Price was a little high, but I can see how they need the money to maintain such a large and immaculate place.

Stayed here for one night en route to Montreal.
When we arrived the main road outside the hotel was being dug up and widened but as the front of the hotel facing the road only consists of the reception area, it meant that our room (and all others) were quiet.
Room itself was large an well equipped and clean, but although there was no noise from adjoining rooms there was a lot of sound from the floor above where someone appeared to be practising Irish dancing !
Restaurant was very good with a wide range of meal types and characterful rooms in a house which dated back to a time when Burlington would not have been the tourist attraction it is now. Staff in the restaurant were especially friendly and even helped us to point out where we could look out of the one window to see the lake from the 'Lake-View' room !!
Breakfast was adequate but without a great deal of choice beyond cereals, bagels and coffee/juices.
probably because of the huge number of nearby competitive hotels, the room rate was very good bearing in mind the quality of the accommodation.
