“Inn at Shelburne Farms - August 2012”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

This was probably my 15th visit to the Inn and the farm and it's still a lovely place to visit for a few days. Nothing ever changes, which is either very good or very bad, depending on your point of view, but I enjoy the constancy. I participated in the "Farmer's Dinner" sponsored by the Vermonth Fresh Network and enjoyed the outdoor meal on the sheep's knoll, which was prepared with all local ingredients. The view across Lake Champlain to the Adirondacks is still lovely to look at. Hope to return many times in the future.

Room Tip: There are several third floor rooms with shared baths that are very affordable.

We spent three glorious days at the farm celebrating our thirtieth wedding anniversary. We stayed at the Inn and ate food grown, processed and cooked at the farm. Everything was beyond compare. We learned the history of the farm; we marveled at the design and vision of its creators and benefactors. What an in credible gift. The staff to a person was gracious, enthusiastic , and proud of every aspect of their work there. This is a great place for people of all ages to experience the grandeur of the Champlain Valley, an era gone by and yet now preserved on a sustainable farm that all can experience and enjoy. This is an example of what we can do to care for what we have and live well in a way that benefits all. We loved it!

Worth every penny to step back in time as well as to help preserve an agrarian heritage site. Although expensive, the capacity to relax (doing puzzles on a covered veranda overlooking a Vermont Lake, pastures and the NY Adirondeck Mountains) and hike throughout 600 acres of
pristine pasture land are memorable, and incomparable. An ode to a family's vision to preserve their 'inheritance' for the benefit of land conservation, agricultural education and artisan baking, cheesemaking, fine dining and the art of slipping into another era. The food is divine although
one must adjust to the lack of audio privacy if one's 'neighbor' is less than considerate.

Room Tip: The White Room offers a honeymoon indulgence.

My family (my wife and I and our two children, ages 22 and 16) visited Shelburne during a New England driving trip in July of 2012. We were looking for a convenint place to spend the night between Woodstock Vermont and Montreal. Shelburne was a home run. We had no idea how spectacular it was from the website. It's a 110 room Gilden Age mansion on the shores of Lake Champlain, designed by Robertson on grounds by Olmstead, built in the 1880's by Vanderbilt heiress Lila Vanderbilt Webb. It's been in their control ever since, and maintains the grace and magesty of a bygone era. Staying is like being one of their guests. You can walk the 1000+ remaining acres, explore the modern farming methods employed, milk a cow, watch them make their cheese, sip an elegant afternoon tea and visit with other guests, eat dinner in the dining room (and the food was great), or just sit in Adirondack chairs on the sloping lawns and admire the view or read a book. There are few places like this in America. I need to figure a way to go back and stay longer.

If you are looking to get away from it all and step back in time this is the place to go - filled with antiques and beautiful paintings it is a history lesson in its self. The food is to die for in the Inn's restaurant all grown on site and just nothing short of amazing. We stayed in the White Room and again beautiful - no TV's, A/C or Heat so pick your timing the inn is only open from May - October Enjoy!!

Room Tip: Pick a room facing the water!

The elegant yet comfortably appointed Inn is a unique and wonderful experience, more like staying over at a well-to-do friends country home than at an Inn or Hotel. The historic former country home of the Vanderbilt/Webb family has maintained an atmosphere of quiet dignity and elegance. The beautiful Gilded age mansion is furnished with many original family treasures and because the property is so vast, almost 1600 acres, once the daily visitors depart the grounds, you can roam the grounds as if the estate was your own private oasis. The dining room which serves breakfast and dinner nightly, served very good entrees, many prepared with either local ingredients or from the Inn's own organic vegetable plots and their own poultry and livestock herds.

The guest rooms vary from vast suites with spacious private bathrooms to comfortable rooms with shared baths. Antiques abound from the Vanderbilt/Webb families and when you walk the halls or sit in a comfortable chair you feel as is you have stepped back into the Gilded Age. The Red Room, the lowest priced room that shares 2 separate bathrooms located just 10 feet down the hall, with 2 other bedrooms located on the third floor, has a drop dead gorgeous view of Lake Champlain and the magnificent restored formal gardens. The room was spotlessly clean, the bed firm and comfortable. At night, all one hears is the cool breeze blowing in off the lake. Can't say enough about the warm and friendly staff and the helpful and knowledgeable employees working throughout the grounds and at the various venues.

The property stresses sustainability, respect for nature and historic preservation. If you can't find peace, tranquility and relaxation here, then you won't find it anywhere. Worth the visit no matter how you measure it. Shelburne Inn and the Shelburne Farms property are jewels to be experienced and treasured.

Room Tip: Red Room is the best value for the money and directly overlooks Lake Champlain and teh formal garden...

I didn't stay at the Inn, but had dinner there one night with my husband and WOW. The meal was one of the most delicious meals either of us had (he had pork with mashed potatoes and I had steak with au gratin potatoes)!! The service was lovely and the views are breathtaking. You can eat in the dining room within the inn or on the porch, so naturally we chose the porch. We watched the sun set from our table and there were adirondack chairs available for lounging after the meal. Would come back in a heartbeat if only we lived closer!
