“This alone is worth a trip to the area”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 15, 2013

Once a gilded-age estate, this expansive property on Lake Champlain now demonstrates sustainable living and farming to children and adults. The grand house operates as a for-profit inn to help support the farm. It gives hope for the future to visit this gorgeous property and see what's being done. Excellent guided tour via hay wagon includes the main house and grounds.

“Worthwhile Tour at Shelburne Farm”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 31, 2013

While in the Burlington, Vermont area we took a tour of Sheburne Farm which is located just one town to the south. The estate once owned and farmed by the Vanderbilts sits on the banks of Lake Champlain. The estate houses and gardens are magnificent. They take you on a open air bus to various parts of the huge estate. You get to see the farm animals and the cheese making process. There is also the opportunity to taste the various types of cheddar made on the farm. the tour is well worth making this stop.

“Fantastic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2013

There's an old splendid mansion that's now an inn & restaurant. Huge barn with petting zoo. Miles of walking paths, some bordering Lake Champlain. Sustainable farming, hand made cheese, apple cider and more. I've never seen anything like it. Also a store with good array of gifts. Admission free. Kid friendly.

“"Essence of Vermont" multifaceted engaging experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2013 via mobile

Just south of Burlington, Shelburne Farms is one of those "must stops" if your vacation takes you to the Green Mountain State. Take a brisk walk 3/4 mile to the Farm Barn and see the baby goats and milking cow, then take the 1.5 hour property tour that demonstrates the breadth and diversity of the estate.

Points of interest include the Dairy Barn, the curved architecture and formal gardens of the Inn with views of Lake Champlain (open mid may through mid October for guests), the rich history of the Vanderbilt family as relayed by highly knowledgeable volunteer guides, and an end of tour cheese tasting of different aged cheeses.

You could also spend several hours walking the property on paths for another perspective. A full day excursion should you choose to make it one. A great combination with the close by Shelburne Museum.

“Not the small experience we were looking for”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2013

This is a HUGE Vanderbilt estate.
We were looking for a small family farm to support. We found these tours to be quite expensive.

Their cheese was decent, but so crowded not worth the stop.
