“Small Gem in the Northeast Kingdom”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 11, 2012 via mobile

The small museum located at the back of the Public Library is well worth a stop. The best known work is Bierstadt's painting of Yosemite, but there are several important paintings from Hudson River artists as well. A very helpful staff member took the time to explain the art, the history of the building, and a bit of the town's history as well. Eight dollars well spent if you are in the area. Afterwards stop in at the antique store to browse a bit, and grab a snack at Paddy Cakes, both just down the street.

“It's A Gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2012

We came across the Athenaeum when looking for places to visit while on vacation in Vermont. It is a hidden gem. Unbelievable art collection for a small town in the Notheast Kingdom of Vt. The building itself is incredible.
If you are anywhere near St J - this should be a must stop. Plan on spending at least an hour maybe two.
Small fee charged.

“The Athehaeum: A St. Johnsbury Treasure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 21, 2011

This is such a surprise! This building is the city library.....so what's the big surprise? It is absolutely gorgeous. It is a national landmark because of the building, the furnishings and the collection. Built in 1871, what is considered to be the public library of St. J was donated to the town by the Fairbanks' family. They achieved fame via the platform scale. Now....another surprise. A small but impressive art gallery is also included in the Athenaeum. The gallery space is elegant, and the paintings reflect a core group donated by the wealthy Fairbanks family as well as additions made throughout the years. It bears repeating: The Athenaeum is such a surprise!
