I hope they NEVER replace the wonderful old Victorian glass cases that hold a wealth of interesting exhibits. Well worth a visit.

The Museum hosts an eclectic assortment of items from around the globe. There are taxidermic animals of all sorts including an impressive collection of birds. Upstairs houses (not handicap friendly) a collection of this & that, from Indian artifacts, geological items, toys, Civil War artifacts and other items from various places around the world. Worth a one time visit but if you are museum savvy you might pass this one up.

What a fun and quirky place!! It is right in the heart of downtown, historic St. Johnsbury and is well worth the visit. Opened in 1891 by Franklin Fairbanks, it is a look into his "cabinet of curiosities." It's like going back in time to see the things that a man of the late 1890s would have collected. It is full of stuffed birds, mammal, everything! You even learn about the taxidermist who did the diaramas and settings. Downstairs is full of stuffed animals of all kinds, while the upstairs is a quirky combination of Egypt, Japan, rocks, dinosaurs, Zulu,..you name it. It is based on the Victorian display method in which people would group their displays in ways that pleased them, color, type, etc. There is not elevalor...only staircases to the upper floor which is a must to see.. Also, the interior barrel roof is an architectural sight to see. We are from the NY metropolitan area where we cut our teeth on the Museum of Natural History, so we didn't know what to expect, but it such fun to see these items in this unique setting. Sort of old fashioned taxidermy and some of the first habitat diaramas in the country. Items that you just don't see in too many collections They have a great OmniGlobe which is fun to play with. The planetarium shows are not often...we missed the 1:30 weekend show on Saturdays and Sundays, so look at your watch and plan to see it. Again, a large flight of staris going up to it...Fun gift shop for kids!!! It was just fun seeing people of all ages looking, pointing, oohing and ahhing at this great setup!

My favorite kind of museum is one that combines a near random selection of history, nature, and art. The Fairbanks museum fits the bill. It leans most toward natural history, which is fine with me, but there is no way to know what kind of exhibit is in the next case or around the next corner.

Lots of stuffed birds and animals, and some really great japanese small ivory carvings. Also, in the planetarium, a show of "space happenings". Fun. Worth a visit if you're in the area.
