“A great way to see the gorge and surrounding area!”

Balloons of Vermont - Private Flights
Reviewed June 25, 2012

Darrek was a fantastic guide who got us all involved in inflating and deflating the balloon, had a bunch of funny stories, and took us on a fabulous ride over the gorge itself. Another balloon company went up at the same time we did from the same location, but I compared their trip and ours, and we had the better flight by far. We went in the summer when everything was lush and green, but I definitely want to go back in the fall sometime to get a view of all of the changing colors.

While you're in the area, take an hour or two to walk down to the bottom of the gorge and enjoy the water.

This was our first hot air balloon experience but it won't be our last. It can best be described as silent soaring. No noise as you lift off and gradually fly over houses, tree tops, waterfalls in a slow, yet breathtaking way. Darrek, our pilot, points out the river and mountain range and provides interesting commentary along the way.
We flew around 7:00 pm in perfect summer t-shirt weather and because we had a 9:00 reservation at Simon Pearce restaurant, Darrek provided the usual champagne toast while we were aloft instead of on the ground. This is a unique way to experience landscape from a very different perspective, exhilirating yet quietly inspiring. Worth the money.

We were spending a quiet week away from home, work, schedules, phones, and kids. We love to drive through small little towns and just explore. Vermont in the off-season was very laid back and enjoyable. I had one surprise in mind for my significant other...a balloon ride which was on both our 'bucket lists'. I searched and found Balloons of Vermont and I contacted Darrek who was very accommodating. It was off-season in May and we were the only ones riding, but Darrek agreed to take us anyway(for the regular fee). We had the most glorious sunny clear day. We had the smaller balloon as it was only the 2 of us plus Darrek, and he put us right to work helping him set it all up. He was such a great guy, not too mention a fantastic pilot. We felt totally safe the whole time. After inflating the balloon, we lifted off in the afternoon and had the ride of our life. There isn't a more beautiful place to experience this. We saw the Gorge, skimmed the river, said hi to the locals grilling on their deck, and took pictures of the balloon's reflection in the lake below. Then we ascended to about 7000 ft. WOW, it was amazingly quiet and peaceful. The bonus was seeing the sunset over Killington. When we finally landed we were in someone's field. The Chase Vehicle was close behind and together we packed up the balloon and the basket and headed back to Quechee. We ended the day with champagne and goodies, a camera full of pictures, tons of memories, and A NEW FRIEND. I would highly recommend Darrek and Balloons of Vermont. It was such fantastic day!

My fiancé purchased this trip for my birthday. It was on my 'bucket list' and Balloons of VT did not disappoint. We arranged for the sunrise tour in early October. We awoke to a light snow fall in Cavendish, VT.
We arrived in Quechee just as the balloon was beginning it's ascent. We scrambled into the basket, on a bright and sunny morning. Derrick, owner/pilot, slowly brought the balloon up. We ascended to approximately 300' and proceeded to float in the sky. Derrick pointed out various topography and the like. In our basket were a young family of four and another couple. Nine, in all and never felt crowded. We gazed below and saw farms, rolling rivers, Killington (fresh snow), and Quechee gorge. The scenery was fantastic. The most alluring aspect of our ride was the quietness. As for Derrick's piloting skills, he dropped the balloon down into a river for several second and barely 1 inch of water. He immediately ascended back up to several hundred feet in the air. A master pilot if ever there was one.
Upon our landing, Derick chose a golf course. He gently brought us down. He the allowed us to take pictures as he and his chase crew took care of folding the balloon back into the chase van. He the drove us to Three Chimney's Bakery (?). There they served us incredible pastries, champagne mimosa's, and coffee. All in a private dining room just for us. Derrick then toasted us and our basket companions. It was TRULY one of my more memorable life experiences. Balloons of VT will NOT disappoint you. It will exceed all you expectations. Derrick's attention to all details makes the true difference. A very GREAT value for this incredible experience. Do not hesitate with your choice for ballooning with Balloons of VT.

I have taken two prior hot air balloon trips but this was the best. Partly due to excellent conditions and foliage and partly due to the excellent job Darrek and his staff did. It was a frosty October Vermont morning, but we were dressed for it and enjoyed watching the setup. Despite what appeared to be a calm wind, our balloon took off and drifted to the southeast, directly over Quechee Gorge, and as the video on their website shows, we dropped right down in the gorge, with the gondola below the bridge. Then we hopscotched at various elevations over spectacular foliage (actually better color from the air than seen on the ground) to an extremely smooth landing. Then off to a local pasty shop overlooking the river for some yummies. I would definitely do this again.
