No one in when we arrived. Waited more than half an hour after ringing the 200 number on the phone. Tried to sit on the porch to wait but chairs so dusty and even vines growing over some of them. Bar stools on top of tables. All downstairs doors open. Empty boxes and rubbish in the lobby area and the computer on with previous guests details on screen!! Totally insecure. Felt like the setting for a horror movie. This is not an inn. We decided to find somewhere else to stay for the night and lose our prepaid booking. We don't stay in 5 star places....always 2 or 3...and we have stayed in hundreds of budget guest houses all over the world so certainly don't expect luxury but this place was totally creepy...I wouldn't have slept if we'd stayed. The owner should take notice of his bad reviews or close the place down. I dread to think what it would be like in winter and yes, it's miles away from ski centres. How on earth it could be advertised as a ski hotel defeats me!

I had stayed here about 20 years ago as a child...full breakfast and family atmosphere. That was then, this is now. This time, I was in one of only 3 rooms occupied on a weeknight. Clean sheets, clean bathroom, clean sink. All that was good! Owner was not warm or friendly when I pulled into the driveway as he and his family were unloading groceries. They looked at me like I had 3 heads. The pub had been closed for several months. There was no coffee or anything in the morning. Apparently they only serve food on weekends if there are enough people there. It was a ghost town, so I dropped my key in the slot and got coffee and a breakfast sandwich at the gas station in Bridgewater.

I'm sorry to hear you did not enjoy your stay.

The previous 3 owners of the property all have gone out of business because they did not run the place in a manner which was financially viable. We rent the restaurant out to a 3rd party, and it is not viable to run a restaurant in this location during the summer months. I understand this may be an inconvenience for you, but there is not enough business in the area to support a restaurant.

Our rooms start at $59/nt during the week. We try to offer a clean affordable place to stay. I understand that in the past the place had been run as a bed and breakfast, but that business model does not work in this property as evident from the previous failures.

The economy is not what t was 20 years ago and there is nothing I can do to change that, I would guess that when you stayed here 20 years ago it was substantially more expensive and that is not even factoring in inflation.

This is not a 4 star hotel. I don't understand why people rate it that way. We stayed in the Wilder room which is upstairs. They door was very difficult to unlock and the impossible to lock from the outside. The lock was very loose with the screws coming out. When we informed the owner he told us that it was because of the weather! Breakfast is 6:30 - 9:30. We went down at 7:00. There were no coffee cups. We had to wait for them to get washed. Then there was no coffee when the cups finally arrived. The bathroom had a half roll of TP on the wall and a spAre half roll on the back of the toilet. We had three adults in our party and this was not enough for an entire weekend. We had to go down and request more. The room was warm and clean but not deserving of the 4 star rating

Thanks for your feedback. The tripadvisor rating is not the star-rating of the property it is supposed to rate your experience at the property. Based on your feedback it does not sound as though you had a bad experience overall. On the note of breakfast we begin at 7:30 not 6:30 hence no coffee or mugs before 7:30, when you came down at 7 we were prepping for breakfast. I hope you found your stay to be enjoyable overall and that we will see you again in the near future.

I last stayed at the Salt Ash about 20 years ago, and while the room was okay and the bed comfortable there was a definite slide. We arrived to find NOONE to greet us, just our key on a table. Interestingly the room pictured as the one we selected was not the room we were assigned, which needless to say was somewhat inferior in appointments. Another couple arrived and didn't even find their key, and calling the posted help number caused the phone to ring at the empty front desk. The owner had called to welcome us before we left home, but we never saw him the whole time we were there. It wasn't quite Bates Motel or Overlook Hotel creepy, but it seemed like doors were open 24/7 with no security. Salt Ash shouldn't be called a bed and breakfast, as no breakfast (not even coffee either in the lobby or the room) was offered. There was a sign asking guests to turn down the heat when they left the room, and while we didn't set it very high we left it on - who wants to return from a day of skiing to a cold room. One day someone on the staff turned it down for us. In the meantime, all manner of lights and fans were running in the bar and outside, day and night, with nobody around. On the whole, I'll keep my memory of the first time I stayed there, soaking in the hot tub (long gone) while falling snow sizzled on the water, but I won't be back.

We are not a bed and breakfast, the listing on Trip advisor has been adjusted o reflect this. We offer rooms mid-week starting at $59/night. Our goal is to provide affordable clean comfortable accommodations. If you are looking for a higher level of service there are many other properties in the area that offer more services at a higher price. We strive to provide the lowest possible price especially during the week, to do so requires that we do not pay for someone to sit around at a desk waiting for guests to arrive. Most people choose to stay with us based on price alone, especially during the week. If you are shopping on price please do not expect 5 star service at 1 star pricing.

The accommodations were basic but cozy. Check in was easy and the entire place is charming enough. The room and bathroom were clean and adequately stocked. There is no cell service but wifi is easy to access and fast. There is only one TV channel, which didn't really matter as my friends and I fell asleep right away after a full day of skiing.

Breakfast, however, was a disappointment. The waffles, which was probably the most substantial item of the food choices, was grocery-grade and was served in it's box. Guests had to toast it themselves, which is fine, except that there was only one toaster for the entire breakfast room.

Coffee was not hot and the water for tea was lukewarm. The rest of the breakfast menu were cereal and fruit. If you want a good breakfast for a full day on the mountain, you will have to get it elsewhere.

While my stay was not bad, I will definitely try other accommodations in the area.

We provide basic continental breakfast on weekends and holidays. Our prices are much lower then a typical bed & breakfast in the area shop around. We strive to provide affordable, comfortable and clean accommodations our rates are among the lowest in the area.

Spent the second half of the kids school vacation in Plymoth skiing at Okemo and staying at the Salt Ash Inn! The Inn is about 20 minutes out from Okemo and from Killington in opposite directions. Okemo mountain was great sun and snow - with a day of rain in between.
The Salt Ash Inn was very quaint. The room was above the bar "the Moore' and accomodated 2 teenages and mself and my husband nicely. Lots of space. The room was a little noisy at times.. but to be expected given it was above the Restaurant. The rstaurant and menu is really nicely done. The kids loved the profitter rolls made onsite and had a great time playing pool while we enjoyed a beer or two after skiiing. The rooms in the Inn are very cute and old world. No frills but warm with lots of hot water and clean and comfortable beds. For the price I have no complaints. We will defintely be back - Thanks Al!

Room Tip: It is worth a call to the Inn to help figure out the best room to accomodate your needs. the rooms a...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Salt Ash Inn is conveniently located near Killington and Okemo Ski Areas in Calvin Coolidge's hometown of Plymouth, in Vermont. We are just up the road from the Long Trial Brewery, and a short drive to Woodstock. The Inn is a very casual, home-style Vermont Country Inn, think about it as a home full of friends you haven’t met yet. The main building is rich in history and much of our furnishings are antique and rustic. The main building has been an 1830s stagecoach stop, a general store and even a post office. The Inn has undergone many updates over the years and recently underwent a major renovation after damages caused by Hurricane Irene. It now offers 13 uniquely decorated guest rooms (all with private baths, individually controlled heat, TV's and telephones with free domestic calls). We offer warm common areas for lounging or reading, a cozy rustic Country style bar with pool table, gas fireplace, and some of the most unique furnishings you will find anywhere. ... more   less
