I've been to a lot of science museums, all over the country, and The Montshire Museum is one of my favorites! It is a real treasure of hands-on science for kids of all ages. My 18 year-old still loves to go there but for the younger crowd it is perfect. In the summer, bring a towel and change of clothes and head out to the water area in back where kids can control the flow of water, stand on top of spouting geysers of water and have a blast. You'd think I work at the museum, but I don't. I just live nearby and the Montshire has been a place we brought our kids for years and a place we take kids who visit us.

The Montshire Museum is a wonderful place... our family likes it better than the Boston Museum of Science, because it has more hands-on exhibits, and offers fabulous outdoor activities as well.

We had three young ones with us, age 9 and under. After enjoying an amazing lunch at KAF (see review) we were off to the Montshire! Before we had checked in the kids were off to the bubble area. The Montshire is wide open so the children can roam from activity to activity and you are able to easily see them. All the exhibits are educational, some contain live animals, and others let your child be active by climbing or riding a bike. When we went upstairs we were engaged in a microscope class led by a Grandma volunteer named Dee. She had the children looking at parts of insects, rocks, plants, and minerals. The climax was feeding spinach and kale to an enormous ant colony! The Summer is even more amazing because there is an entire water feature outdoors and trails for the whole family. Bring snacks- no food there.
