“Horrible New Mangement”
Reviewed October 5, 2011

Motel should be shut down. The new manager is dealing with a severe pregnancy crisis, but instead of taking care of business--ie getting someone else or cancelling reservations, guests are left to muddle along with a marginally clean rooms with literarly no service. Just spent four nights, and rooms were never cleaned, trash was never picked up, towels never changed. Had to beg for towels. Worse, nothing ever seemed to be (managment's) fault. The linen people didn't come, not the management's fault. I actually felt guilty for asking for anything. This hugely pregnant woman would give me a harrassed look every time I showed up to ask for the most basic things. One time the woman's mother was there "helping" and the mother threw up in hands and just said "I don't work here." I don't think anyone works there!. Little kids stand in the background looking confused. It was embarrassing, unprofessional and uncomfortable. It made me long for chain hotels. She cut the rate down to the non holiday, which was still more than half this place was worth, even during foliage season. The WIFI does NOT work ---at least it never did in my room. The pregnant woman insisted it would, but it didn't. There were spiders, bugs, of all kinds lining every corner of the ceiling and the air conditioner. I took one of the precious towells and stood on an end table and dusted. The front window and bathroom window were filled with dead bugs. The bathroom window was left open so someone must have seen the bugs. I'm talking a layer of bugs, not just one or two. The room had the smallest, cheapest soaps I've ever seen in a motel--worse than motel 6. The room smelled--odd and bad. I got some Glade from the local grocery. Good things--the tv worked and it was a flat screen. The room has been recently rennovated, but to honest it looks like the cheapest of rennovations. When we left, someone was going out to get coffee, so I guess there's free coffee if they have it. Maybe they could have gone to buy some towels too. The ones we got were from empty rooms. The WIFI did work in the small lounge area. There's no cell phone service in this valley, one thing that is not their fault; everything else is. I asked them why didn't you tell us before--they said they did--but they didn't say anything about no service, no towels, bugs, odor, etc, etc. If they did, I would have got something else. I felt bad about the prenancy crisis, but this was an important trip for our family. We needed a place to stay that would be comfortable and clean. We didn't need anything fancy or need to be waited on. We ended up feeling bad for the manager/ownwer, but also angry that the motel really put pall on our trip. We have our own problems and didn't want to get involved with the owners problems. All we wanted was what any basic motel would offer. We got half of that. Based on the review on August 11, this place won't get any better. These people don't know what they're doing; if they keep this place, I hope they can get some help, from people who know how to get things done, not people who throw up their hands and say "I don't work here." This pretty valley deserves better.

Room Tip: Pay the money and go somewhere else.

My list of quality complaints is extensive, may be new owners but if so they are over their heads. Wifi doesn't work in rooms, towels stuffed in bathroom window as a curtain, bathroom door doesn't close, smelly trash barrel and flies outside door, outside lights etc. never cleaned, stains on quilt, this motel no better than 1 star at best.
Would modify trip and stay in Brattleboro, Vt and follow reviews

My husband and I stayed one night this past weekend and were pleasantly surprised by the recently renovated room. Don't expect a Hilton, but our room and bathroom were clean and updated with all of the necessary amenities. The inn-keeper is extremely nice and trusting, as she left an envelope on the desk with our keys since we arrived late and she was at dinner. There is even a small continental breakfast which was adequate. It's perfectly located if you are visiting Brattleboro, Putney, Townshend, and even Stratton. The best part were the inn-keepers two golden retrievers who came out to greet us (but only since we asked). We would definitely stay again.

The property is an older traditional motel. The rooms are clean (although we did find a pair of underpants belonging to the previous guest hanging on the back of the bathroom door), have very few amenities, and very basic decoration. We did have a refrigerator in our room and there is cable television and a phone in the room (Cell phone service is bad in this area). Hot water was set to scalding temperature (presumably to compensate for low supply). Not a golf course as a nother review indicates, but a driving range. Good location near grocery store. Low end towels and linens. Lock on door was quirky. Because the staff was often out around the property performing housekeeping chores and work on the grounds, it was hard to get attention at the desk for check-in, questions, check-out.

I would only recommend staying here if your budget does not allow any of the nicer inns or lodges in the area but this is a reliable basic choice if you need to stay near Newfane and don't plan to linger in your room much.

This place is run by a family, which go out of their way to help you. There aren't too many places to eat, unless you drive 20 minutes to Brattleboro, but it didn't bother us. The rooms are normal sized, and very clean. There wasn't any smell in the room, and the owners decorate the rooms in a very basic, but homey fashion.

The scenery is beautiful in this area, and overall you can't find a better place to stay for your money. We'll go back without a second thought.

The Riverbend Lodge is located a short walk from the Bar & Grill of the same name. It's a small motel with comfortable rooms. The only amenity to speak of was a small fridge for our convenience (which was nice). The bed was firm and comfortable and the room was kept neat. There's a golf course out back if that's helpful info to anyone. The family sells their own maple syrup (yep, bought some! )

VERY IMPORTANT: There is no cellphone service in the area and this lodging offers no long-distance service in their rooms. They suggest using a calling card or calling collect.

BOTTOM LINE:
You can't beat the place as far as value goes- It's short money. They used to have a website but it's no longer active.

  • Liked — not expensive and bar & grill is convenient
  • Disliked — no long-distance service
  • Tips/Secrets — There's a market close by on the same street to stock the fridge
