Description: Imagine the entire state of Vermont as a food experiment or as its own laboratory where food products are grown and created for this particular climate; seasonally, organically, and sustainably. Now imagine restaurants as teaching laboratories this restaurant for instance. NECI on Main is a production lab for New England Culinary Institute. For over 30 years we have been teaching students to make connections with farmers, between the landscape and our food, and between seasons and culinary traditions. Sometimes we include food items that express a particular sense of place from outside of Vermont, or culinary traditions from other cultures, and use those items or experiences to enhance the foods grown here in Vermont. Our menu is no exception in this teaching philosophy, and reflects the best that Vermont’s farmers, and America’s next generation of young chefs offer.

Main Street was a a favorite for my family for many years. Then, perhaps about three years ago, things went into a decline at the restaurant. Service became sporadic, food quality dropped off, portions became smaller, and prices went up. We stopped going regularly and also stopped recommending Main Street to visiting friends. However, a recent visit was reassuring-- the food was better, service was not great but good enough, and, overall, we had a good meal here that convinced us that things had improved. We were glad to see the change for the better and will be back. Is there room for improvement? Yes, but Main Street seems to have gotten the message and appears to working to turn things around.

My only complaint is that dining is not very private. The food here is phenomenal, and because it's a culinary school, prices are reasonable. We went for my son's birthday while visiting NH and he loved it as well. Job well done.

My husband and I went to this restaurant for our anniversary, and really enjoyed ourselves. The service was a little slow, but very pleasant, and the food was very good. We chose to do the prix fixe dinner, which was an appetizer, entree and dessert for $27. The choices were limited, but the fun part about this menu is that is is changed quarterly to reflect what the students are studying that quarter, so there are some unusual choices you might not normally see, so your palate can expand its horizons! I had the charcuterie for my appetizer, which was 3 different types of prepared meats with garnishes, and it was excellent. My husband had the quail, which was also good. For the entree, I had the duck, which was very well cooked and not greasy or gamey at all. My husband had the grass-fed steak, which was very flavorful, but unevenly cooked -- He raved it was cooked perfectly, but the piece he gave to me was overcooked. The desserts were both great. The only bad thing is the wine list was rather limited. Our server was very nice, although a bit slow, and the atmosphere was very nice and refined.

As NECI had a new student body starting that night, we were able to sample practically everything on the menu due to a special that they were running that night. From quail to beet tartare, artesian cheeses with Brioche Bakery breads and house-made candied ginger, and perfectly cooked scallops, the menu did not disappoint.

We stopped here for lunch and expected great food and service since it is a culinary school. The service was horrible - almost non-existent. The food that was supposed to be hot was cold and visa-versa. The food was pretty bad. We couldn't send it back because no one came to our table to check on our meals. All we did was wait, wait, wait for everything. It was a nightmare. On our way out we decided to use the handicapped exit because it was closer to our car and we walked out into what was the smoking area for the instructors and students. Real professional!! No wonder the service is poor as they were all outside smoking. Avoid this place if you are in Montepelier unless you want to spend two hours waiting for unappetizing, overpriced food.
