“Excellent eclectic food!”
Reviewed March 6, 2014 via mobile

The theme this week is Thai. We had a wonderful and interesting meal! I had roast pork with shredded celery, eggplant and a black bean sauce. It was amazing! The place is a bit pricey but the food is wonderful. Worth it!

“Cozy funky eatery”
Reviewed March 4, 2014

I have eaten here often. The food is very good, albeit a bit pricey, balanced by it being BYO so diners can indulge in pricey wine/beer without paying retail prices. The decor is creative, homey and funk; the space is small providing limited seating which explains the limited, but varied menu that focuses on quality locally produced ingredients, including produce from the owner's gardening efforts.

“Not Yet a "Hidden Gem"”
Reviewed January 31, 2014

Restaurant reviewers, even we rank amateurs, delight in finding "hidden gems." Despite many of the right inclinations, Salt falls short. At least so far.

This is an easy restaurant to root for. Knowledgeable, food-savvy proprietors, out of the way location, bootstrap decor, innovative food approach, but as much as I wanted to love it, I couldn't. Here's why.

* The decor was shoe-string, which is ok, or even desirable for this type of restaurant, but it lacked any sense of style or panache. The lighting is harsh, and the dining room, on the night we were there, was so cold that all but one patron was eating with his coat on.

* The kitchen is open, but why? There was little sense of watching any magic of food transformation, just mostly a cook with his back to you going about his job.

* The menu is limited (good), but don't cover enough range. We sampled 3 of the 5 available entrees and they were all over-the-top in terms of richness. They were priced at $24-27 which is on the high side by local standards. If you are going to command carriage trade prices in a funky setting, the food better be knock-your-socks-off good.

As a small cafe, Salt will hopefully be fast on its feet in responding to its customers. Everyone likes to see an operation like this succeed. Let's hope the next time we visit the "Not Yet" can be removed from the review. BYOB.

“Gem!”
Reviewed December 21, 2013

A little gem off the beaten path in Montpelier, we felt like we were in rural France. The food was fabulous, the service excellent and the ambience of this tiny cafe is homey.
