Be warned that in the winter months The Vermonter train from NYC arrives in Montpelier Vt after dark and the train station is almost 2 miles from civilation. The station will be closed. There is no public transportation unless the lone Montpelier taxi is arranged beforehand. Winter temperatures at that time can approach zero and wind-chill much below that. I wouldn't give a nickel for your chances of surviving a walk to town. God forbid you are disabled.

The ride up to Camel's Hump State Park is a hoot-the mountain itself is a challenge to the great vertical relief and steepness of the upper ridges. Still, well worth the trip.

Desk personnel know Montpelier well and can expertly direct you to your destination. The information bookshelves and map racks are well organized and nicely stacked. Rooms are clean, well-lighted and bright. Service is swift and efficient. Overall a pleasant experience.

We visited Montepelier during our visit to Vermont in September. The staff recommended nearby shops for pottery and art work. There were fresh apples for all the visitors! The beautiful State House is across the street and beautiful on this fall day. A most enjoyable place to visit.
