If you're passing through Middlebury, driving along Rt 30 or even Rt 7 (get off in the center of town and go towards the College), stop for lunch at the Otter Creek Bakery. Best place to grab a quick snack or a sandwich to go or eat outside (weather permitting, of course).
Each time I visit, I get a Chocolate Elephant Ear or a Pain au chocolat. The chocolate croissants are definitely the best I have had outside France. Reasonably priced at around $2. There are also fine mini desserts that run from about $4 and up - definitely worth it for special occasions or as a treat.
Great coffees, breads and freshly-made sandwiches with any number of toppings as well.
Some stool-seating indoors and shaded seating outside on wooden benches.
Definitely worth the stop if you're passing through town and want to avoid restaurants Lots of choices for everyone and excellent quality.
