I stayed two nights in the Middlebury Inn for a work meeting and found it just fine -- cozy, homey, comfortable, with very pleasant and friendly staff. The quaintly tiled bathroom was a little chilly and the wall heater in the bedroom was quite loud, but aside from that, no complaints. Breakfast in the Inn's restaurant was just fine.

You certainly picked a nice time to visit Vermont. Normally the snow would be melting and the roads would be muddy (mud season), but instead, 80+ degrees and daffodils blooming. But we know that the weather is anything but normal lately. Thanks for the nice comments and the input on the air conditioner. We welcome feedback from a seasoned traveler such as yourself.

We stayed two nights in the main house of the inn in March. The inn is very nice - updated but keeping it's 1800's charm. The room was very clean, though the air conditioner was a bit loud (it was a very abnormal 80 degrees in March).
Because it was so nice out, we were able to have dinner at the inn restaurant on the porch overlooking the park. The food was good, service was great. We also visited the spa at the inn for massages. Overall, it was a great relaxing stay.

We booked a stay at the Middlebury Inn through one of the travel sites on the Internet.
When I called to make the reservation, the person on the desk booked us into a luxury room in the main inn. The room overlooked the green and we thought the noise of the traffic would be an issue, but it was not.
It had a king bed with folding doors, as described by an earlier reviewer. The bed was very comfotable. We had a great night's sleep. The living area was small, but adequate to relax in. Each area had a tv in it, which was nice. Although the bathroom was small, it was certainly more than spacious for two people, and really gave the old world flavor to the place. It was also immaculate and well stocked. It is such a historic property, and so well maintained. The staff was wonderful. The desk person who checked us in was terrfic and so personable. Afternoon tea was a treat after a long drive. Dinner was wonderful and breakfast too. Again, the service was excellent. I met Geoff, the General Manager, one morning and he was so welcoming and helpful, as well. Visiting the Middlebury Inn provides one with a unique experience, a step back in time. Would love to return again.

We like to hear from our guests who may find us through a third party and to hear that you had a good experience is doubly nice. We have a great old Inn here in Middlebury and we love it when our guests appreciate it for it's history and unique qualities. By all means come back again and I'm sure you'll find the same welcoming staff and old world charm.

We stayed off season when the inn and the town were quiet.
The inn overlooks the town green. We stayed in a "luxury" room - sort of a mini suite with a small sitting room, a king bed barely fitting in a bedroom with folding doors between, and a small tiled bath. The room had a fridge and two TVs, and overlooked the square. The decor is tired, but the room was clean.
We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful finding places to hike, other places to eat and shopping. The restaurant was excellent at both breakfast and dinner, and very reasonably priced. Our waitresses were friendly and helpful with suggestions.
We enjoyed afternoon tea in the common room both days - nice tea, lemonade & treats until 5:30 PM.
Overall, a very worthwhile experience.

It's nice to get positive comments from a well heeled traveler like yourself. You know what you like in a hotel, yet you understand what a historic Inn can and can't provide. Of course the most important feature is friendly, helpful service and it's great that you found that here. We are always working hard to keep the rooms fresh and attractive and appreciate your helpful comments.

I have just departed from another 6 day stay at MI and can't help but wax eloquently about how wonderful it was.
The building is lovely and very well maintained, the staff is friendly, helpful and on-the-ball and HELPFUL!
I even must compliment the housekeepers-they all pass the infamous white glove test.
I will continue to stay as long as they will have me. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Thanks

Thank you for your kind comments and of course we'll have you as long as you'd like to keep staying with us. I was just commenting that everywhere I go in our small town of Middlebury, somebody tells me they worked at the Middlebury Inn sometime in our recent history. My point is we have a staff who are very familiar with the area and enjoy being as helpful and friendly as every one of our town residents are. I hope to meet you next time you're here and thanks again.

What a neat property this is in lovely Middlebury. We didn't have time to explore the hotel, unfortunately, but we appreciated the history - the place is dripping in it. I will say that although I didn't really mind dragging heavy suitcases up two flights of stairs, I did worry about older folks encountering the issue. The elevator didn't appear to function and the woman at the desk seemed awfully busy. Surfaces were a bit dusty and I was surprised to find that not even soap was provided in the bathroom! Just a tiny bottle of shampoo. A few more amenities, including off-wall hairdryer would make more sense in a lovely inn like this. Still, I would probably stay again and try to spend more time in the public areas.

Thank you for your helpful comments and I like your comment about our Inn 'dripping in history'. Of course, as you point out, there is more to a hotel stay than a nice old building. It sounds like we dropped the ball in a couple of areas. The elevator is a well functioning 100 year old Otis that requires an employee to operate. I'm sorry you were not made aware of that. And your amenities should have inlcuded two bars of soap and shampoo. Again, thanks for bringing this to our attention and please visit us a again.

My wife and I stayed at the Middlebury Inn partly out of business, partly out of pleasure. As many reviewers have noted, the inn is absolutely beautiful, full of meandering passageways and interesting details around every corner (from the Robert Frost portrait at the check-in desk, to the framed historic photos and portraits lining the halls, to the manual elevator). We had a great experience: the room (a small suite) was spacious for two; the main-floor restaurant, wonderful and varied in its menu; and the bar, exceptionally accommodating. We had the privilege of meeting the owner and many of the staff, all of whom were helpful and genuinely friendly. We found the inn to be a near-perfect reflection of Middlebury itself: historic, comfortable and full of eclectic charm.

Room Tip: We stayed on the first floor of the historic portion. It was quiet and relaxing.

Aren't you nice! The Middlebury In has been the great lady on the hill overlooking the town of Middlebury for almost two centuries. You captured the essense of the Inn as well as the Town and I thank you.
