The Inns at Equinox
Ranked #8 of 11 Manchester B&B and Inns
Reviewed August 17, 2013

We took advantage of a Living Social deal and booked a night at the Equinox. The room was half it's usual cost. When we called to book, the nice lady advised us that we should reserve a room with a king size bed. We agreed and added the $20.00 additional cost. On check-in day, we were told we would be in the "Town Houses" and not the Inn and that there were no king beds available. It was disappointing, but we took it. The building was out back; a two story row of rooms. The entrance hall was very dirty, our room was less than clean and not very "historic" in decor. The porch was covered in cobwebs and dirt, with a broken chair and an old towel tossed over the shrubs - overrun with tall weeds. Our neighbors had a large dog in their room and it barked every time a door opened. There was no coffee maker in our room; but one could walk over to the rear of the Inn and find free coffee set up. It appears that the property is running on its historic relationship with the Lincoln and Orvis families and is paying little attention to maintaining its infrastructure. When we checked out, we discovered our bill included the $20.00 fee for a king bed that was "unavailable". It took the desk clerk three tries to correct the error. If you are considering a visit to the Manchester, Vermont, area be advised that the area is very expensive; our dinner meal was almost $100 with no drinks. You will get more sleep and value staying at any of the motels in the area.

We belong to a business group that meets several times per year in New England. Our gathering started on Tuesday afternoon with 18 holes of Golf. Perfect conditions with good company. From there was a little cocktail hour to get everyone together again . The meeting followed the next day without any issues. Great dinner followed at the Golf course outdoor patio. The staff could have done a better job at handling the party as they may not have had enough staff that evening. No warm butter ready for the lobster and clams !!! No manager to oversea the evening as far as I could see. Only negative is they charge a $25.00 daily resort fee !!!!!!!! Do they really need to charge a fee over and above a room rate !!!!!!!

If you value your sleep, request a room facing away from the interior. The Equinox has an outdoor bar which runs late into the evening and can generate a lot of noise. On our visit this past weekend, the bar was in full swing until midnight making sleep difficult. Unfortunately, calls to the front desk starting at 11p did not prompt any action from the hotel. Another warning, do not expect an early check in - or a timely check in for that matter. We arrived at 230p and were called by the front desk at 430 telling us our room was ready (for a promised 4p check in).
Overall, the experience was just so-so ... late check in, too noisy and overpriced restaurant options. A beautiful location and very helpful concierge saved this from 2 stars.

Room Tip: Stay away from the interior rooms unless you want to participate in the bar scene.

We went in the middle of the week in late July using a Groupon discount. Sometimes you worry about using Groupon....will they put you in the worst rooms? We upgraded based on the fact that we had 3 people, to a larger room and could not have been happier! The room was a full apartment with a living room and fireplace, kitchen, dishwasher and master bedroom suite. Fantastic! The grounds of the hotel were impeccable and the location is wonderful. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this vacation!

We stayed two nights at the Equinox in the historic main building and had a lovely stay. There was a mix up with our reservation when we arrived, the fault of the SPG 800 desk, not the hotel itself, and the staff at the front desk were gracious and accommodating. Our second floor room was large and comfortable, with a king sized bed and large flat screen tv. The only thing lacking was a work desk, which would be nice. As another reviewer mentioned, the wifi is free and easy to connect to, which was a treat after some hotels I’ve visited recently where you have to jump through hoops to get on. The public areas of the hotel are beautiful, the grounds are very well kept. We especially liked the firepit in the evening, it’s a great place to have a drink and meet other guests. Our only complaint is on our second night we had asked for a rollaway (we had picked up our daughter from camp) which was brought in the morning. We were told that it would be set up for us during turn-down service, which never happened. Because we had taken showers in the afternoon after hiking, we didn’t have any shampoo or conditioner for the next morning, expecting them to be replenished at turndown. An inconvenience, but not a big deal. Dinner int he tavern was pricey but delicious. All in all it was a lovely weekend at the Equinox.

The Inns at Equinox property is terrific, if you are staying in the historic Inn building. Grant at the check in desk is great. Unfortunately, we were relegated to a townhouse room. The townhouses are privately owned and the hotel merely performs the rental process. They will emphatically state this over and over if you have any concerns. The room was clean, but terribly outdated (1980's anyone?), bath towels are thin and rough, air conditioner unit on the patio is very noisy. Be prepared to hear every noise of your neighbors (two large dogs staying above us) as well. This is still an "Equinox" property; therefore, I think the Inn should demand owners maintain the units at a higher level. Overgrown and weed filled landscaping, exterior doors that are scuffed and do not close properly. It definitely is not what was expected.

Room Tip: Try your best to stay away from the townhouse rooms. They are less expensive but not worth the trad...

Loved this hotel! The rooms were very nicely decorated and the hotel was definitely a grand place. Yes, it is old, so you do hear the elevators going up and down, doors slam, floors creak, but it really isn't that big a deal. Loved all the old black and white pictures lining the hallways showing the history of the place. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. The wifi was super easy to connect to (no silly password access needed) and I loved how you don't have to use a key card to open every door on the property, they were unlocked the old-fashioned way!
We tried the breakfast in the hotel one morning, way too pricey for standard buffet meal, but there are tons of restaurants to choose from in the heart of town. Up For Breakfast was our fave breakfast spot, and Seasons and Ye Olde Tavern were also quite good. Seasons had a great beet hummus as a starter that was so tasty. Northshire Bookstore was a surprise treat, a bookstore with food and beer/wine? I could be locked in there for weeks! We had an unbelievable Falconry lesson that was just so unique and wondrous, so much fun...we also canoed down the Battenkill and just took in all the gorgeous scenery. We were there just for a long romantic weekend, but I came home so relaxed as if I had spent a week there. The pool was great, and the outdoor hot tub facing the mountains was the perfect way to forget real life for awhile. Will definitely go back!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the mountains.
