“Beautiful place, but pick your room there carefully!”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

We came to Manchester for a wedding during Leaf Peak Week. The bride and groom, our gracious hosts booked all of our rooms so we did not chose our rooms in advance. I was told, by others in our party, that the rooms in the main building and the dog friendly cottage were lovely and had wonderful views. The food at our private family brunch on Sunday was plentiful and wonderful. The hot and cold buffet were delicious. When we got there we were put in Room 33 in an outbuilding that they called "a cottage". The building and hall carpeting were run down. The accoustics were awful. We could here our neighbors like they were in our room. The people upstairs were running up and down the steps, which also sounded like they were in our room. The view was non existant except for some very weird, very large statues. While the Inn was lovely and the hosts gracious, I highly recommend you stay away from the building that contains Room 33 in it.We certainly will.

Room Tip: The room was clean, the hallway carpeting, cottage, was old and filthy.... a very poor introduction...

The breakfast was wonderful and the inn keepers were very nice, but the room was not worth the money. We arrived at dark (and it was very dark) and the outside light to our room was broken so we had to find a flashlight to navigate our way down the large steps leading to the room. Once in the room, the toilet was loose, the bathtub didn't drain, and half of the bathroom lights were out. When we returned from sightseeing the next day, we came back to find that there had been no cleaning service. We had to walk up to the inn, at dark, for fresh towels and garbage bags. We were staying in one of the carriage houses, so maybe our experience would have been different had we been staying in the main inn. (the inn was beautiful) The town of Manchester was wonderful!

I have to take responsibility for this guest's. review When the family checked in, I upgraded them to a larger lodging situation which I thought would be more comfortable for them. I did not inform housekeeping that I had made the change. The room was not properly prepared or serviced. My intentions were right, but they backfired. I am sincerely sorry that these guests did not have an A+ experience. They are a very nice family. Georgette

I had read that the owner of the Wilburton was an avid art collector, but I was not prepared for the numbers of statues and sculptures scattered throughout the grounds of the estate. That combined with the beautiful views of the mountains made for a wonderful stay. We stayed in a building across from the main house, and we found that to be very quiet and comfortable. The room had a separate living room area, a whirlpool, refrigerator, king sized bed and many other comforts. Breakfast was delicious and was served by the owner of the inn. I can honestly say that the Wilburton was unlike any other place I have stayed. A true experience!

Room Tip: If you want to avoid stairs, request for a room in the building across from the main house.

My wife and I had our rehearsal dinner (for approx. 140) here in August and it was perfect. We opted for a BBQ, and had tables covering the entire patio area as well as additional tables outside on the lawn. Andy Avery played music before he left for his gig at the Equinox and he was spectacular. The food was great, the weather was perfect and during the planning Georgette could not have been more accommodating. The highlight was the bon fire out back after dinner by the Egyptian’esque statues. Kegs were wheeled out and s’mores were served. The artwork is a bit eclectic but overall adds to the charm of the Inn.

The Wilburton Inn staff made a special effort to accommodate 85 guests of a wedding party I recently attended - guest stayed at the main mansion and several villas on the grounds. This was not the usual sort of wedding party, as the guests were from India and the U.S. Nor was the Wilburton Inn, I discovered, the usual sort of Inn.

Walking across the broad lawn bordered by woodlands and in the shadow of the Green Mountains, a slight, elder Aunt in her sari stopped me to say, "This is a healing place." Sculpture pieces are placed throughout the natural setting; a glass building overlooks the grounds. The glass building houses murals which illustrate the work of the Inn's owner, Albert Levis, whose psychological research and practice were devoted to the resolution of the many conflicting polarities in human character. The resolution Dr. Levis sought was for individual lives and for the greater human community. In the quiet of her walk across the lawn, the Aunt was sensing this.

The majority of the staff were three generations of the owner's family. The mingling of the Indian and American families with the Wilburton Inn family, as they warmly provided hospitality, felt totally easy. They adapted to the desires of the bride and groom by preparing both Indian and Western cuisine. A musical grandson among the Inn's staff welcomed us to the dining hall with music performed on his double bass. After the wedding dinner was served, Mrs. Levis told us the story of this historic Inn and how the family acquired it. Dr. Levis was graciously visible and available to help guests with whatever they needed. If it was conversation you wanted with him, you were in for a treat. Our wedding group invited all of this, but if you are of the mind to be quietly on your own, the staff will not intrude.

I fear this review may sound rhapsodic, but this extraordinary place inspires just that.

Manchester Vermont is a beautiful little town and the location of the Wilburton is great. Our room on the third floor was a little difficult, as the eves cut drastically into the usable space. Breakfast was good, but not great. Bed creaked like crazy.

We spent one night at the Wilburton Inn during a two week tour of New England this summer. The setting is stunning and the friendly, unfussy welcome and hospitality made it one of the nicest places we stayed in. Breakfast was freshly cooked and delicious, the best we had during our stay in the USA. Very comfortable room with a fantastic view and the owners were assiduous in recommending places to visit locally and ensuring that we were comfortable during our stay in their lovely house.
