A must see when visiting Manchester. It is a great value and a wonderful place to visit for the entire family. The farm is a must see too in the spring since you get to get up close and personal with all the baby goats.

“Gorgeous Views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2014

The gardens are simply amazing. The Stamford Motel recommended that we go here since we enjoyed there gardens so much. WOW !!!!! If I could only take the gardener home with me. The building was very interesting and people who enjoy history and taking a walk back in time would enjoy going here. The property is amazing. Weddings must be unbelievable here. We were sorry we wouldn't be here in mid-June. The train car was kind of cool and we just hit it right for the baby goats. It was a great way to spend sometime after hiking up Mount Equinox.

“Pretty views and a step back in time”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 21, 2014

We stopped here to check it out and it was very nice. The grounds have plenty of trails to walk around on, make sure to walk down to the goat farm. If you're lucky you can see the baby goats. The grounds are kept up beautifully and the house itself is very interesting. Ask one of the guides to play the organ, you can hear it through the whole house. When we visited the gardens in back weren't in bloom, I would've liked to have seen the flowers.

Last year we visited Castle in the Clouds in NH, which is a house from about the same time period and I personally enjoyed that more. There was more to look at in the house. Where Hildene has more of a draw for people who want to walk around the trails around the house. Don't get me wrong, it was still very nice and I'm glad we went, but just a personal preference.

“Not just for history buffs”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2014

We were going to stay in Manchester one night and checked tripadvisor to see what was there. Hildene is tops on the list but from the reviews it seemed to appeal to history buffs- which put me on the fence as to whether to go or not (plus taking the price into consideration- $16 ea). I finally decided to give it a whirl and coincidentally we stopped at the motel where we had reserved a room on the way to Hildene and it turned out she had discounted tickets- so only cost us $10 each. Surprise, surprise, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. After seeing the excesses of palaces and castles in Europe, we appreciated the understated interiors of Hildene. My husband especially liked seeing the family snapshots in the rooms. Most of the furniture is original. As the docent said (all very friendly and informative)- this was the summer home of a family who enjoyed being outdoors - albeit a wealthy family. The docent played the organ for us which was pretty cool. We were too early to see any flowers in the garden but our timing was good to see many baby goats at the farm. The pullman car is very interesting (also learning about the porters' lives) and the gift shop is in the old carriage house with much of the original woodwork intact.

“Family Day of Fun!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2014

What an amazing place to see! We visited on the morning of April 29th and could not have been happier with our decision to put Hildene on our itinerary. Beautiful historic site with knowledgeable staff on hand who clearly love what they do and didn't mind answering our endless stream of questions! Melissa was so welcoming from start to finish and knew just what to say to our 11 year old--wait until you meet all "the kids" at the farm. Nobody could confirm the definite number of baby goats to have recently been born and we fell in love with all 30+ of them when we met them in the barn. The farm is an amazing operation, complete with cheese cave and the Pullman Car is a wonderful piece of history too. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time when you visit-so much more than just a beautiful historic house!
