The guided tour by Ray Smith made the place. It's beautiful and there's a lot of neat history. The Pullman Car was neat. But our tour guide was fantastic. You name it, he knew it.

This is a beautiful estate with beautiful surroundings. So interesting to think that President
Lincoln's son and family lived in this home not that many years ago!! Everyone was so nice.
Great opportunity to remember how families lived in the past. Worth the visit!

give yourself at least half a day to enjoy hildene. the estate of robert todd lincoln, son of the president, is magnificent. take the tour of the house first, and then be sure to see the gardens behind the house. there are great views from the observatory--yes, they had their own observatory--and the pullman car is quite something to behold. no one travels like that anymore! try to leave some time to hike some of the trails that are available. once you're in the woods, you'll feel as if no else is around for miles and miles. there is also a small farm area, and a great gift shop, with an outstanding collection of books about president lincoln, mary lincoln, and robert todd lincoln. you can also but locally produced items such as honey and jams.

The docents are extremely knowledgable and the home is very interesting. The Sunbeam railcar is definitely worth the short walk. They could do with adding a little cafe to complete the experience.

We visited Hildene during our trip to New England. It is a nice family mansion, but aparently used very often as location for functions. The afternoon we visited, there was a weddiing for the evening scheduled. They set up a very large tent in front of the house, so there as no nice photo taking possible.
