“Don't miss Hildene”

This historic home is one of the most picturesque places I've been to. When you see it, you'll know why the people of Manchester dedicate themselves to preserving and maintaining it for generations to come.

“Hildene - The highlight of our trip”
Reviewed October 6, 2007

We just returned home from a stay in Manchester and were so happy that we took the time to visit Hildene. Truly enjoyed the beauty of the home as well as the spectacular beauty of the outdoors as viewed from Hildene's windows! Our leisurely tour of the gardens and grounds further impressed us with the majesty of the mountain views.

“Extraordinary Historic Southern VT Estate”
Reviewed September 3, 2007

If you love history, if you love scenic Vermont, and if you love architecture and grand gardens, this is a place not to miss! The Hildene Estate was Robert Todd Lincoln's (son of Abe & Mary) summer home in the lush Green Mountains of southern Vermont. Situated atop 412 beautiful acres with views galore of the valley surrounding Manchester, VT (where Orvis Co., Bromley & Stratton Ski Resorts call home), this historic estate will not disappoint anyone! The tour of the home is very interesting architecturally and has original furniture (some from Tiffany), tools & assessories from the turn of the century. The Lincoln family stories are interesting too! The original carriage barn has been renovated to house the museum store and management offices. Here there is a pristine antique train that winds it's way along a custom built track near the ceiling. Plans to renovate an original Pullman Train Car ridden in by various US presidents is underway. The finished car will be featured in a new building being built from timbers from the property after they are cut, drawn to the site by Hildene oxen, kiln-dried and custom built to specs. A solar-powered cheese making operation and maple syrup production area is also planned. Great for all ages, all times of the year! Kids' education programs are growing in popularity; take a hay ride with the kids and pet the farm animals; listen to the VT Symphony on the lawn overlooking the mountains--endless beauty & wonder. Plan to have your wedding here! And say hi to Carrie Howe when you arrive---the museum store manager with a smile and enthusiam that will brighten your whole visit to Vermont! [--]

“Best Green Mountain View I've Ever Seen!!”
Reviewed October 25, 2006

Hildene is certainly an example of beautiful architecture, yet the view [as though from an eagle's nest] from the 2nd floor sitting room is a spectacular panorama of the beautiful mountains surrounding this great property. I recently visited the mansion the end of Oct., 06 and was duly impressed. There's a classical garden [a gift from a daughter to her mother] overlooking this view. It must be truly beautiful in the summer. The Aolian organ in the front entrance is another treat. They will actually turn it on [used to be an auto roll playing organ, that still can be manually played. The tunes are now on CD and by a simple push of a button can be played for you]. The pipes of the organ are concealed on the landing of the great staircase. It really is a treat to hear and see. In addition you'll be able to see one of Abe Lincoln's black top hats and a great amount of artifacts and memoribilia in some of the rooms upstairs. They've even left one of the rooms as found, so you can see how it had been decorated years ago by the family. Truly an interesting house. Don't miss the astronomical observatory [still used by the Hildene Club] that in use. Bring the camara for the great views. It's set back about 2-3 mi. from Rt. 7A.

“A Nice Historic House Visit”
Reviewed August 26, 2006

Hildene, the home of Robert Todd Lincoln, only surviving son of President Abraham Lincoln, is well worth a visit. The location is conveniently near downtown Manchester VT, yet feels out in the country. The staff is welcoming, and tours are constant--with choice of "on your own" or guided. This no-waiting policy makes it convenient for those on a schedule. Robert Lincoln was president and chairman of the Pullman train car company, and the house reflects his business interests as well as family history. This is an early 20th century house, so many visitors will have a "grandma had one of those" experience. The gardens were in full bloom during our August visit.
