“Equivocal about Equinox”

We stayed over X-mas weekend. Hotel is attractive and well-maintained, and most of the staff -- especially the younger ones -- were pleasant. Pool area was also quite nice. But, the rooms were noisy, sparsely furnished (e.g., our room had one easy chair for two people, no closet and only a small armoire), and very plain.

The biggest problem was dining -- the food was mediocre and expensive; the staff was mostly brusque; the service slow; and lunch was unattainable without reservations -- which we were told would not be needed. The town was mostly factory outlets -- good for bargains but not much in the way of charm. The high point was a long, self-guided hike in the conservation area adjacent to the hotel. Perfect for 50 - somethings. We and our friends all felt the place was way over-priced and none of us plans to return.

I love, love, loved the 1811 House!

We booked a room there at the last minute, literally, by making a phone call as we drove through Manchester looking for a place to stay. What a gem!

We walked into the main house and was greeted by the inn owners' daughter, who is one of the innkeepers. We had asked for the least expensive room since we go there at 8:00 pm and were planning to leave first thing in the morning. She told us that since she was having a private family party in the main house, she would comp us the upgrade to another room in the cottage.

She then showed us around the pub, and explained that we could help ourselves to drinks and pay on the honor system. How fun is that?

Then she took us to our room. All I can say is WOW. It was beautifully decorated with antique furniture and knick knacks. We had a four poster bed with lovely linens, and there was a comfortable seating area stocked with lots of current magazines.

The bathroom was nice too - not luxurious but very nice and spotlessly clean. The towels were fabulous - so soft. And there was a basket stocked with nice toiletries too.

Breakfast was great. We had bananas baked in butter and sugar and sprinkled with cinnamon. Really delicious. Then we were served an omelet with our choice of ingredients. That was delicious too. And of course we had toast, which was served with homemade preserves. Unlike the previous reviewers I thought the portions were generous, and the hosts were so accommodating I am sure they would have served more if we had asked.

It was at that time we explored the rest of the main house a bit. Very nice sitting rooms that were warm and inviting.

All in all, I loved the 1811 and wished we had been able to stay for longer.

  • Liked — Extremely friendly staff and beautiful room.
  • Disliked — The town doesn't offer much in the way of activities unless you're into outlet shopping.

My sister and I traveled to the Equinox for a fun, relaxing weekend trip between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The hotel is quite lovely on the outside and in the inside, too. Very homey and cozy. One thing that we did not think of was the fact that the hotel can be rented out for a wedding. Although it did not affect too much of our stay, we did run into a few delays -- check-in took longer than we would have hoped (had to wait about 20-25 minutes for our "turn"), the bar area would become quite full with the group from the wedding, and groups of people walking down the hotel hallways never seems to be a quiet walk.
We found that for the most part, it was a very nice stay. The employees are very accommodating and seem happy to help, and offer suggestions. We found wonderful restaurants by asking the concierge, who were also willing to make reservations for us.

  • Liked — Coziness of the Hotel
  • Disliked — Overcrowded-ness at times
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask if there will be any events, and ask to be AWAY from them!

This so called four diamond resort is falling apart. Our room has drapes that are soooo dusting we can't breath. The bathroom is worse than an interstate gas station rest room. The furniture has holes in it. The floor is so slanted, a grape rolls off the table.
This place is riding it's long time reputation and it is disgustingly dusting and dirty. The carpeting is all shredded and needs replacement. What a horrible place to stay. I would have left the first night if at all possible.

Bad heat, too hot, too cold, dusty old furniture and drapes, cheap amenities. Don't consider it a destination, a Motel 6 would be better.....

We just returned from a three night stay at the Equinox and had a wonderful time. I will first say that I have stayed at top hotels including Four Seasons Chicago (voted #1 hotel in the US by Traveller Magazine), Peninsula, Ritz Carlton so I have a good basis to compare service, amenities, etc.

We were quite hesitant to stay there given all the bad reviews but went anyway and did not regret it. We had a specaila promotion and did not feel we overpaid but I agree that at regular prices the hotel might be too expensive for what it offers.

We stayed there from Sun to Wend. and there were very few guest at the hotel --I am sure that on weekends is a different story.

Our room was a Clasic Room, small but that did not bother us since we are from NYC where all apt are pretty small. Everything was clean and pleasant, maid service twice a day, etc. The room had wonderful big (almost floor to ceiling) windows overlooking the gardern. We were on the top floor in our section of the hotel and pretty far from the elevator (room 319) so there was no noise to speak of. The walls are pretty thin so if we were in any other part of the hotel (first floor, close to elevator or service entrance) we would have been disturbed but fortunatelly there was really no noise.

The service was outstanding--at our arrival they were extremely pleasant, valet parked our car, check in was a breeze, the bellman gave us a tour of the hotel, everyone said good day, good night, enjoy your stay, etc. -- pleasantries galore! I would say the service was a notch below Ritz or 4 Seasons but that is a pretty high compliment for a hotel in Vermont.

The Spa facilities are great--the pool is beautiful and the relaxation area also quite nice, small but nice.

So overall we had a great time, Manchester and vicinity is beautiful, we went on the "Cheese Trail" to visit a number of small dairy farms that produce artisan cheeses, so there is plenty to do and enjoy.

If you are planning a visit, make sure you request a top floor room away from elevators, go during the week when there are fewer guests and you will have a pleasant stay, with wonderful service and facitilies all to yourselves.

The Equinox may be the worst hotel experience I have ever had. We booked a room in the main hotel and when we arrived they put us in the "Town Houses". The rooms were tiny, dirty and without any service. The bed had the imprint of another guest, who had likely left the room after seeing it --- that's exactly what we did. There were bugs in the hallway, stains on the sink, torn bed skirt, wrinkled sheets, trash on the floor etc, etc. And, the worst part, the people there really could have cared less. I am certain that they're used to the complaints by now. When we went to another hotel in the area that evening we met fellow "castaways" from the Bates Motel.

A totally disappointed experience. We were expecting a luxury hotel but instead we were appalled by a dirty, unkempt closet-size room. It was worse than a roadside motel. It's shocking that they can bill themselves as a luxury resort and offer their guest such a horror. Worse, the staff was rude and unhelpful. We were forced to find another hotel late at night because our room was completely uninhabitable.
