5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2013

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Smugglers Notch. We had a spacious three bedroom unit that was beautiful and extremely well equipped. Staff was great and there are activities available for every age. This is the perfect family vacation resort.

We stayed in Falcons 17 through an RCI exchange. This unit was a 3 BR/2 Bath condo with a full kitchen. It was BEAUTIFUL...clean and nicely decorated. Two gas fireplaces and a 2 person Jacuzzi tub! We were there for Veteran's Day weekend, so too early for skiing and too late for fall colors...but the perfect time for QUIET! We used the Courtside pool/hot tubs and found them to be clean and warm. Falcons has it's own 20 person outdoor spa...we loved using that in the evenings. We also had access to the West Hill Community Center...pool/ping pong and an outdoor heated pool. We used this pool, too...again, warm and clean.

We drove into Burlington one day to go to ECHO science center...always fun. We stopped by Snowflake Chocolates in Jericho on our way home...YUMMY!

Do your grocery shopping on the way to the resort. The store at Smuggs is very pricey, though they do have most everything you might need. We usually shop at Hanley's in Jeffersonville. It is tiny, but again, has most everything we need, and it's only 5 miles away....makes it worth the higher price to save the gas! There is a larger grocery store in both Johnson and Morrisville. (Stowe also has groceries...but this time of year, the Notch is closed.)

We've been to Smuggs many times over the years, and we always enjoy ourselves. We do not purchase any sort of additional "pass"...choosing to enjoy what comes with our unit, and to entertain ourselves. We also don't attend any of the sales meetings hosted by Wyndham...just say "No" and enjoy your vacation time!

We're headed back for April vacation week...counting the days! A long weekend was just too short!

Thank you for reviewing your fall stay with us. We're glad to hear that you enjoyed your Falcons "home away from home" in our West Hill community. With a mountainside location outside of the main village, West Hill does offer a quiet retreat with lovely amenities and views. Your tips on grocery shopping will be useful to other travelers; many of our visitors like to stock up prior to arrival and then enjoy the fully equipped kitchens In our vacation homes. We're also glad to hear you enjoyed ECHO - with its many interactive displays, it is a fun destination for all ages, plus the added attractions of fabulous waterfront view and restaurants conveniently located nearby. We look forward to seeing you this spring - thank you for choosing Smugglers' for your getaways!

Rooms are clean and modernized! The kids loved camps which freed me and my wife to play tennis and volleyball. Every evening there is some acrivity for when the kids are back. There is a bunch of pools and games if you like to hang out with kids. Hiking is good if you like that kind of thing I enjoyed very much rope course. There are 3 excellent restaurants right in there.

My husband and our two kids (6 years old and 20 months) stayed here in July 2013 over the 4th of July holiday. I really wanted to like this place (especially considering how much we paid), but was not impressed. First off, the condos are in serious need of updating. The units and the decor are straight out of the 1980s. The TVs were old-style sets (not flat screen) and were very small. They only had basic cable. Air conditioning units are in the bedrooms but there's no air conditioning in the living areas and kitchen.

The worst thing though was that our unit was infested with ants. By the time we noticed how big of a problem it was, we had already unpacked all our clothes, food, baby things, crib, etc. We never called to complain because we knew they'd just offer to move us, and we weren't interested in packing and unpacking all our things again. So we sprayed the place with Raid and it helped somewhat. We kept all our food in the fridge so the ants (and god knows what else) wouldn't get at it. I understand these places are probably hard to keep clean with all the guests coming and going and people leaving crumbs everywhere, and I also understand the place is in the middle of the woods with lots of bugs, but you would think they would treat the places for bugs to keep them out. It was so bad at one point, we had ants crawling on our arms and legs while we'd be sitting in the living room watching TV. Gross.

Food at the restaurants was adequate. Nothing great.

It seems this place is probably best suited for families with older kids, because there wasn't much that my kids could do aside from visiting the pools and water slides. My 6 year-old was too young for a lot of the activities. I was also quite annoyed by the fact that one of the water play areas for the toddler-age kids was not open, even though it was shown on their website and promotional materials as being open. We were disappointed when we took one of the shuttles to the pool and walked over to the play area only to be told that it was still under construction. That limited us to the one pool in the whole place where there was a water play area where my 20 month-old could play, unless we were willing to split up.

Also, our washing machine leaked the first day we were there, and set off fire alarms in the whole building. We had to evacuate the place for over an hour so they could control the leak and reset the alarms. I understand this wasn't their fault, but it was just kind of icing on the cake.

We won't be staying here again and don't recommend it.

We are very sorry to hear that your experience here was not a positive one; we wish that we had been alerted to your dissatisfaction during your stay so that corrective action might have been taken, particularly as regards the ants. Our accommodations are inspected and reviewed for necessary upgrades; in fact, older televisions currently are being replaced. We apologize for the inconvenience to you as necessary safety precautions and repairs were undertaken related to the washing machine leakage.

The opening of the new splash pad for children this past summer unfortunately was delayed a bit by weather. We can understand your disappointment in having missed an experience you were looking forward to. Please accept our apologies that your Smugglers' vacation fell short of your expectations; we sincerely hope that you will reconsider and visit in the future.

Karen Boushie

We stayed at Smuggs from October 27 until November 3, 2013. Once again we had a fantastic time. We are Club owners and this time we stayed in an Aspen's 3 bedroom. The views were just incredible, and the Condo was great, very clean and well stocked. We ate in most of the week, but we did go to the Morse Mountain Grill to hear Goodtime Charlie, Jammin Sam and Rockin Ron preform. They are all wonderful. Every time we stay at Smuggs, it is truly like 'COMING HOME".

Room Tip: Always call ahead and ask about the condo, especially the size and what kind of sleeping arrangement...

Hello - Thank you for posting a review of your late fall stay; we're pleased to hear you enjoyed your time here in an Aspens home. We're glad that you made special mention of Charlie, Ron and Sam - they are are indeed talented and engaging performers who are very much appreciated by our visitors. Thank you also for sharing a tip - the recommendation to call is a good one for others considering a visit. Given our many lodging configurations, we welcome inquiries about our vacation homes so that we can make an effort to match up the lodging with the visitor's needs prior to their arrival.

Since this was a gift from a friend I can't complain about the value. The condo was adequate---needs updating but it was clean as a whistle and all of the appliances were new high end energy efficient models. Beware of the sales pitch! We went just to get the $100 American Express card (which we used at the Hearth and Candle, which was pretty good). This is no longer a traditional time share arrangement but a point system that you purchase. If you ask to take the point catalogue and price offer with you to look at you are told that that price is only good for right NOW----if you leave the offer is no longer good. You want me to spend $24,000 without checking it out?!? Who does that?!? We were in Evergreen in early autumn---no real color and it rained all week but we were equipped with books so no big deal. Went to the Notch, ate in a good restaurant in Jeffersonville (may be the ONLY restaurant in Jeffersonville) poked around in Stowe and checked out a few art galleries. We were on the front of the building right at the base of the ski lift----not sure that would be a good location during ski season. No gas fireplace and there was a distinct old fire smell which the rain enhanced.

Hello - Thank you for reviewing your early fall stay with us. How nice that you received your stay as a gift from a friend. Evergreen's central location provides convenient access to our village amenities in any season, which some guests prefer, while others desire lodging that is not in the village center. For other travelers reading this review who may want particular amenities such as fireplace, it is best to book through our reservations staff to make preferences known.

Many of our fall visitors enjoy doing exactly what you did - exploring the area, dining out, and driving over the mountain to Stowe. Our Guest Service Desk is happy to suggest outings and dining in the area.

Autumn's fall colors typically occur from late September through early October. We hope you'll consider returning for a future visit.

Best wishes,

Came in through rci. Found out later that rci guests get the crispy rooms. So apparently rci guests aren't worth it to them.
Had a two bedroom unit in oaks it was old but ok. No view whatsoever. Overlooked maintenance area.
Apparently there are new units but they are not reserved for rci guests.
Double bed too small for two adults In need of new mattresses.
Not there to ski so way too far off the beaten path for site-seeing. Spent way too much time driving here and there.
Hearth and candle restaurant ok. Best thing they had was French onion soup. The rest was just ok.
Bought groceries to make our own breakfast.
Won't come back.

Hello - Thank you for submitting a review of your recent stay at Smugglers'. Your comments will help guide ongoing improvements. Our RCI guests are valued members of our community and it's disappointing to us that you were not satisfied with your visit. We encourage guests booking through RCI to call our Owner Services team to confirm the accommodations they have reserved, which would enable discussion of lodging location within our village. We certainly also welcome communication during a traveler's stay of any areas of dissatisfaction.

Many of our guests choose to stay at Smugglers' because of our quiet mountain location. We understand that it can be nice to minimize driving during a vacation. Those who like to sightsee beyond the resort can leave the driving to us, as we do offer a day trip program so that our guests can enjoy an outing with a driver.

We appreciate your comments.
