“Overpriced, boring and aging”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2012

Every year our family takes a vacation together. In total there are 22 of us. 10 adults and 12 kids ranging from ages 1 through 16. We were hoping this would be another great place to get together, keep the kids busy and just have a good time. That was not the case. The units were like walking in dorm rooms. The rooms themselves were not so bad, especially some of the suites.
Smugglers Notch seems only to be practical in the winter time for skiing unless you and all your family members are into hiking. The only thing they don't charge extra for are the pools...as if they didn't charge you enough for the rooms. Our kids were occupied with each other thank goodness otherwise they were bored. The weather didn't help the situation because if it was nice, they could have at least taken more advantage of the pools. The camps were all gathered outside of our room every morning so that made reading a book or relaxing on our patio in peace impossible.
The most upsetting & I'd say decieving thing about this resort is how their brochures and websites advertise a lake with a trampoline and boat rentals but when we explored and couldn't find that, we were told by the staff that it is off site. You drive our of the resort, park in one of their lots & then hike down a trail to the lake.
I'm not sure what anyone sees in this place for summer. It was not worth our travel time or money.

We just spent our first week at Smuggs and were not disappointed. My recommendations if you are considering a family vacation to Smuggs:
1. Carefully plan out which activities your family is interested in before you go. All activities for each day are listed on the website. Many things need early registration as they do get booked up and become unavailable.
2. Enjoy places off the resort. We went into Stowe, did our own "Taste of Vermont" day with Ben & Jerry's, Cabot, Green Mountain Coffee, Magic Hat brewery etc., and visited the Essex outlets on a rainy day.
3. Activities I recommend: LLama trek, Segway tour, Boot camp, Ice Cream Float, kids camps, self-guided hikes, the Arbortrek zipline tour (a must!), and the pools are great.
4. Although older, the accommodations closest to the Village center are far more convenient to everything than some of the newer condos. We never had to take the shuttle at all because we could easily walk everywhere. Our condo (Hakone) was spacious, clean, and comfortable.
All of the staff is friendly and helpful and really there to make your vacation enjoyable. On the one hand I feel the trip was expensive (we've spent less on trips to Disney!), but truly a fun, laid-back, family vacation. Aside from sporadic rain, the weather is beautiful!

Room Tip: The Hakone building is convenient to the Courtside pool, Notchville Park, and the Village Center.

We just spent 5 nights at Smuggs and had a very nice time. There are some areas that could use improvement, though. Some of the areas are a little old. We requested a one bedroom with a king bed, and were given a room in the Nordland units. The hallways of the Nordland needed updating and smelled musty, but we were very pleased with our room. It was a loft with 2 full bedrooms and 2 full pbaths. The room was clean and in good condition, much better than the hallways. Also, check in time is 5 pm, but our room was ready when we arrived at 12:30. We had air conditioning (not all units do), which was important because other than the sliding glass door to the deck and a skylight, we had no windows. The kitchen was fully stocked with utensils and there were books and games- nice touch.
The pool areas were all great. It was disappointing that Notchville didn't open until 11:00, but Courtside and Mountainside open at 10. Some food and drink are available at Mountainside, but my husband was disappointed that not all of the pools offered alcoholic drinks. We are not big drinkers, but he would have enjoyed a beer on a hot day. If you want a drink, make sure to go to Mountainside. There are slides at all of the pools, and my 8 year old enjoyed them all. The rock climbing wall and giant swing are located at Notchville. Both are fun, but have specific hours and cost money.
We ate at the deli. Good food, but expensive. That being said, the portions are huge and we found that my husband and I could share a sandwich and be satisfied. We enjoyed the Morse Mountain Grill for breakfast- very yummy. We also went for dinner once, decent food- on par with Applebees, but sort of overpriced. Surprisingly, the pizza was pretty good. A good inexpensive alternative for dinner.
My daughter went to camp for one day, and insisted on going back for a second day. She loved the counselors and the activities. She spent one day with the arts and crafts group, and one day with sound and stage. Rockin Ron was at sound and stage - what a nice guy!
There are family activities every night. We tried to go to most of them. Many are outside, and it can get cold at night. Bring a sweater. Also, it can be buggy, so remember the bug spray.
Overall, we had a lot of fun and we recommend Smuggs as a family vacation.

First the disclosure: We are timeshare owners at this resort and have being vacationing here every July for the past 8 years.

With that said, Smuggler's Notch is a great vacation spot with families with children. They provide age appropriate camps for children under 18 (and over 3, i think). My children enjoy their time at the camps. There are pools with water slides, tennis courts, frisbee golf, mini golf....its a pretty good list of stuff to do on site. The accomodations are condos so there is a full kitchen and laundry as well as outdoor grills to use.

You may ask, why 4 stars and not 5. The truth is, the resort is showing signs of aging and some deferred maintenance. The hot tubs at the Courtside pool are constantly needing repairs, the handle for the steps in the pool are bent. The condo unit got new TVs (flat panel) and new beds, but many lightbulbs were not working, the wood needs painting and some of the appliances didnt work propery (like the toaster).

Bottom line, this remains a great vacation spot and we are already booked for 2013.

Room Tip: Newer is definately nicer when it comes to accomodations. However, the newer buildings are farther...

We reserved a 5 day FamilyFest package. This included the camp for our kids (our kids fit into Notch Squad for 11-15 year olds). We figured the kids might try one or two days of camp but they were eager to go the whole time. The camp was subdivided into interest groups (adventure ~sports, nature & hiking, arts and crafts, and sound & stage). This was perfect for our kids. Each group included a little hiking and swimming everyday. Kids can change interest groups through the week. They came home each day tired from all the fresh air & exercise and happy. Camp was from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. which gave my husband and I a chance to have some time together. We were able to join in some of the guided hikes, enjoy a quiet coffee & tea, take advantage of the pools and hot tubs and explore some of the nearby towns (Stowe, Morrisville, etc.). The added bonus was that the kids made some new friends and were eager to spend time exploring the resort (pools, Fun Zone, activity centres) with their new buddies after camp. It was a nice combination of having time to do our own thing and having fun together as a family. The resort is spread out but there is a convenient shuttle available to all the condos and amenities. Our condo in the West Hill area (2 bedroom premium) was clean, spacious and had a wonderful deck with a view of the mountains. The premium condos are a little more expensive but well worth it ( more space, great views, etc.). Check out the website to see the various floor plans of the different condos. There was a fully equipped kitchen and dining room in the condo making it convenient to be able to make our own meals. As in other reviews, we did shop for groceries off-site. Morrisville has a nice grocery store with lots of fresh produce & reasonable prices. It is about 20 minutes away. There is a general store at the resort that is great for milk and other essentials. Overall a great family place to stay that provided us with some priceless family memories.

We had the most glorious week. Three kids and two adults. Our kids are 9,7, and 2. Our kids loved their camps and our 2 year old loved treasures! It allowed me to do the guided hikes and my husband to do tennis. Great wholesome family fun with good time Charlie. I live the campfire sing a long.

Thank you Smuggs!

We purchased a timeshare 7years ago. When we first began going smuggs our kids were 5 and enjoyed going to camp and my husband and I enjoyed time to ourselves. Now that our triplets are 12, they no longer wish to attend camp, but thoroughly enjoy the independence of doing what they want around the resort. The smugg's atmosphere is so family oriented we never feel nervous about allowing our kids to travel among the resort by themselves. All employees are very friendly and accommodating. Going to smugglers notch is my favorite family vacation. It's the best place to sit back and relax. I certainly believe our investment 7years ago was certainly worth every penny!

Room Tip: Premium timeshare units are nicer than a some of the older units
