I hadn't skied Jay Peak in 10 years until the past few days, but was happy with my choice! Jay offer excellent value on its lift tickets, especially: (1) if you "reload" your ticket online and (2) for kids, which unlike most areas includes anyone not yet 19. The quality of the snow is excellent by Eastern standards, and even after a major early January thaw they managed to have most of the mountain open and in good shape. Jay has good terrain for the advanced skier, including more glades than just about any other area in the east. That was critical this past week as one could ski find lots of snow in the trees.
We virtually never fly when we ski in New England, but did for the long weekend. We were pleasantly surprised that it was easy to get to Jay in under 1 1/2 hours from the Burlington airport -- not bad given how remote the Northeast Kingdom can seem.
Jay has invested a lot in its infrastructure over the past five years and it really shows. I found its employees to be friendly and helpful, and they seem to go out of their way not to gouge people the way some ski areas do (e.g., their on the mountain ski shop and grocery market are both pretty reasonable). Not to mention only $5.50 for a 24 oz. Heineken at the slopeside cafeteria!
Downsides: There are not lots of restaurant choices compared to many other ski areas, if you're looking for nightlife I suspect it's pretty limited and guess what -- it's cold on some of the chairlifts (though the 60 person Tram can help one avoid the cold)! But if you're here primarily to ski and not spend a small fortune, I think you'll be happy.
All in all a good choice, and we'll be back.
