“Hotel Jay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2012

My mom, my husband, and I spent a night at the new Hotel Jay on Labor Day weekend. We got a good deal due to participating in the Jay Peak Trail Running Festival. Two hundred bucks and we got waterpark access both Friday and Saturday (only stayed Friday night) for the three of us, plus free tram rides. The room was beautiful. Full size kitchen - we didn't need it - but it was a nice bonus. Living room had a Murphy bed and a pull-out sofa, a balcony that you could actually sit on (ever rented a room that has a balcony you can barely step out on?!), a fireplace, and wall-mounted flat screen TV. Separate bedroom had a king size bed and balcony. A small changing room to keep your ski gear out of the way, or put your luggage in. Large bathroom.

Unfortunately, we didn't realize the waterpark closed at 8pm. We showed up at 7:50, after a great all-you-can-eat BBQ at Alice's Restaurant (only in summer, only $20, includes sunset tram ride!). We were disappointed to get one quick spin around the lazy river before we had to get out of the water.

An annoying part of the room - the lights! Couldn't figure out what switch went to what light. If this one is on, then that one won't come on, but if this one is off, then the other will. Very confusing. The bathroom fan is not powerful enough. Despite the doors in the room (bathroom, bedroom) being solid wood, they do not block out noise from the next room at all.

What was extremely frustrating for us was the check-out. We were participating in the Jay Peak Trail Running Festival Saturday morning. 3 back-to-back 5Ks. 8:30, 9:30, & 10:30. Checkout was at 11:00. They were sold out for Saturday night and would only extend checkout 'til 11:30. We had our bags packed and ready early that morning, but we really just wanted to take a nice, hot (private) shower in the room, not in the waterpark locker room!!! They would not budge and said it would be $100 if we stayed past 11:30. We only needed the room until noon. 11:30 did us no good - we would've finished our runs, got our shirts, and had to sprint up to the room with moments to spare to get out by 11:30. Instead showered in the waterpark locker room, had to bring soap and shampoo from the hotel room. I understand they had a lot of rooms to clean for incoming guests, but surely not everyone was asking for a late check-out. They couldn't see past 11:30 (and we asked three different people at the desk at different times). This was a major disappointment.

Room Tip: Ask for slopeside for a better view. We had the parking lot view...but that also provided a gorgeou...

The jay peak resort is a great getaway where you can enjoy the waterpark with the kids. The surfing thing is a blast but takes a couple of tries before being able to stay up. Our 1 bedroom suite had a full kithchen which we used. Parking is a bit of a mess, but I suppose they are working on it. Staff all around are friendly and helpfull. everything is very good, we will return.

Room Tip: we stayed in the tram lodge and found it to be quieter than the Hotel. I would return to the lodge.

We were looking for a fun place for a family vacation and it turns out we made a great choice!

Lodging: Hotel Jay is beautiful- very clean with modern, attractive decor. Our penthouse was amazing: huge bathroom, designer kitchen with appliances that I wish I had at home, living room with comfortable modern furniture, fireplace, flat screen tv, huge floor to ceiling window with beautiful mountain view and door entry to balcony. Our son loved his Murphy bed and we loved our separate bedroom with comfortable king-sized bed, our own flat screen tv and our own door to the balcony. Housekeeping staff does a great job and always offered a friendly "hello" to us in the hallways.

Entertainment: The waterpark was fun with something for everyone. Every staff person we encountered was polite and helpful. We spent many hours sliding, floating and lounging. The arcade has a neat card system for most of the games- load money on the card, swipe the card to play a game and then load your winning tickets on to the card. Special mention must be given to the staff member Sam who patiently attended to machines, dispensed arcade cash cards and redeemed tickets for prizes. Despite being pulled in ten different directions at once, he always kept his cool. Last but not least, the tram ride was a blast. Again, staff was very friendly and truly seemed to enjoy interacting with riders by pointing out various landmarks and telling the history of the tram. The view at the top was priceless!

Food: We grocery shopped at White's Market in St. Johnsbury on the way to the resort and cooked most of our meals in the penthouse kitchen. We did eat once at Mountain Dick's Pizza- the pizza was so good that we brought the leftovers home when we checked out. Also had dessert one night at the Foundry- once again, the staff went out of their way to make sure we were happy. The desserts were delicious!

Miscellaneous: The resort is currently going through a construction phase and I can't wait to see the changes! I can honestly say that we were not bothered, even once, by any construction noise or activity. One of our favorite things was a coupon booklet we were given upon check-in. It is full of great deals.

Room Tip: Stay in a penthouse!

I recently took advantage of a "Snique Away" deal that included lodging for four and entrance fees to the waterpark for our entire stay and free gondola trips to the top of the mountain all for one reasonable room rate. So the kids were able to go to the waterpark Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the two night stay. I enjoyed the spa with an excellent menu of services and a wonderful therapist. We ate at Alice's kirtchen and the Foundary and the food was very good. All of the service personnel where helpful and friendly. Don't let this off-season ski area fool you.. Most other New England ski areas should take a page out of this marketing plan. Jay Peak really is a four-season recreation facility. This place was not packed but there were alot of people staying there. The only thing we did not try was the indoor skate haus. Well worth the drive over from Maine..

Room Tip: Be sure to use the coupon book that is give to you at check in.

Spent two days in the spring and loved every minute of it!! We spent hours in the water park and loved being able to relax and cook for the kids at our own pace. With kids having plenty of space for all our stuff including drinks/snacks ect.. was convienient and affordable. Our place was super clean and comfortable, it was a condo/town house on the golf course. The town house had two floors so the kids could be down in the bedroom playing or napping and we could have a seperate living area, a lot better then a motel/hotel room. We will definately be back and have told a lot of others about it already. If I had to be critical of anything it was checking in. I called before we left to check in on what time we could check in, we were arriving about 3pm. When we checked in they told me our room would be ready by 6pm at the latest. Wow, 6pm is crazy late!! Thankfully the gentleman at the desk was very nice and simply said housekeeping didnt know we were coming and he could get us into a different unit right away. It all worked out great, in the future I just wouldnt want to not check in to be that late (maybe this isnt the norm?). My boys are 5,6 and loved every minute of it, can't wait to go back.

Stayed one night in August, 2012. Traveled with wife and two kids, 5 and 9. Had a beautiful one bedroom suite with king bed and fireplace. Room exceeded expectations including granite counter tops and full kitchen. The indoor water park was outstanding, not too crowded and plenty to do. Also included in the splash and stay package was a tram ride to the top of the mountain and indoor ice skating. We finished the day with pizza and a trip to the arcade. A wonderful time was had by all and we will return. Almost too much to do in one day. We could of stayed in the water park the whole next day but we had a long ride home. Was pleasantly surprised by a huge TV hanging above surfing in water park. The only negative was the slow service when we went to the on site pizza restaurant. This was mitigated by the the pizza being above average. Bottom line was nice room, indoor water park, tram and ice skating for one moderate price.

Just spent a few days at Jay Peak's new hotel. It has a great deal to recommend it, and I would stay there again. Water park is full of families enjoying themselves. The roar of the surfing machine and the shrieks of happy children do add up to a really high decibel level, which I think would make it a hard place to work day in and day out. The lifeguards appeared to be paying close attention to all swimmers though. I think I heard one of them say that there are 22 lifeguards on duty at a time. Personally, I preferred sitting by the outdoor pool where it was much quieter, and the weather was perfect. So nice to have the choice!

Not all restaurants were open midweek, so everything (with the exception of the waterpark) was pretty sleepy--not surprising for a ski resort in August! The front desk staff forgot to tell us anything about restaurant hours, although I later found out they do have a notebook of menus there for guests to look through. No menus or listing of restaurant hours in the room, nor could I find menus online to check out ahead of time. I expect this is something they will improve on--this Hotel Jay is brand new.

Unfortunately, the curtain in our room was already broken, so there was a large swath of window that had no drapes. When we called down to the front desk about this, at around 10 pm, they said they had heard of this problem, and would try to reach someone from maintenance. They also said they didn't think it could be fixed that night. We never heard back from maintenance or from the front desk, and the bright morning light had me up before 6 am (not really part of my vacation plan). My impression was that more than one room may have this problem, so if you go make sure your curtains close all the way before you get settled in to a room.

As others have suggested, it's a good idea to bring some food--partly because the fridge, two-burner stove, and microwave right in the room make preparation of breakfasts and lunches so easy, but also because the dining options are quite limited (at least in summer). We had a very nice dinner at the Clubhouse Grill, down the hill from the hotel at the Golf Course, but our lunch at Mountain Dick's was really not very good: my french fries had a few rotten bits, the salad was iceberg, and my partner's sub came without any condiments. Perhaps they were just having an off day.

A beautiful, peaceful setting, tasteful decor, comfortable beds, and very well-equipped rooms give this place a definite thumbs up. The waterpark and skating rink are excellent attractions and they make Jay Peak a worthy destination at any time of year.
