There's a great trail (formerly the raidbed of a late 19th Century/early 20th Century reailway) which follows the West River for several miles; a great place to walk or bike with--or without--the kids. Along the way there are strategically placed benches and pic-nic tables. If you want a bit more--but not too--strenuous of a hike, then near the end of the river path follow a side trail up to Hamilton Falls, a short twenty-minute hike, where you will be rewarded by a dramatic falls and cascade; at the top there's a naturally occuring pool which is great for a refreshing dip. At the edge of this pool, seperated by a chest-high rock lip, the falls/cascade go almost straight down, so take care, as 14 people have plunged to their deaths over the years (I used to like to tempt fate by sitting on this lip; no longer since, with the advancing of age, I'm now subject to some "dizzy spells"!) Along the path up to the falls my son, running ahead, saw what he thought at first was a big black dog up ahead. As he got closer he discovered it was a BEAR! It ran off up the hill--and he rapidly retreated back to his dad!

We did the Hamilton falls hike. We did not climb to the top of the falls, but still found the hike to be worthwhile and enjoyable.

My family has been coming to Jamaica State Park since I was a little kid, many moons ago. Now I am bringing my son and having even more fun. We are able to bike, hike and swim in the West River. The campsites are roomy, clean and private. The staff are friendly and helpful. If you love camping you will be very happy with this state park.

We have been coming to Jamaica State Park for summer camping for several years now. The campground has a lot to offer, and is especially good for families. Some things of interests to children include: a small nature center on site that offers several programs- both educational and arts & crafts activities, a playground, swim area, and children's nature trail. This year they started family movie nights on Fridays, but we did not attend so I cannot speak to what that is specifically like. The park has a few hiking trails, the West River trail being the primary one. This is a long, but easy hike. If you take the trail until it ends you will find another trail that takes you up to Hamilton Falls. Sadly, we have not made it there yet because our child is still too young to make that trek, but it is an option for those that have more time and stamina! The other main trail is the Overlook Trail. This trail is a little more difficult as it is steep in some areas, but it offers really nice views.

As for sites, the ones along the river are superb, but you must book early (think 11 months in advance) to get one. We have stayed in several of these sites over the years, with Ash being our favorite. But any site along the river would most likely not disappoint. Also, the sites along the river are not actually on the river, rather they are up on a ledge that looks over the river. The views are beautiful, but if you are camping with really young children you may not want to deal with your camp site bordering on a ledge. As for the other sites, they all appear to be adequate in size, but some are more spread out than others. If you can spring the extra money for a lean-to, it is certainly worth it. Aside from offering additional storage space, it provides a nice shelter for rainy days.

The campground bathrooms are clean, but the shower area does leave a little to be desired. It is pretty small, and there is often a wait. There is not really a good place to set your belongings in the shower so you may want to bring a plastic bath caddy if you plan on using the showers. $0.50 gets you five minutes of hot water, and you can add quarters for more minutes.

Firewood and ice are sold on site at pretty reasonable prices. They also sell soft drinks and ice cream bars at the camp office. You can help yourself to coffee at the camp office Thursday-Sunday mornings, for a requested donation of $0.75. If there is anything you can't buy at the park then the D&K Grocery just up the street has probably got your covered.

All and all, you can't really go wrong with this campground. We find ourselves returning every year because we know we will be pleased.

But walking along the river was awesome, listening to its song and reading the markers along the way. Next time we will bring bikes and ride the two miles up to the Hamilton Falls trailhead and then hike up. My bad knees prevented me from hiking the 3 miles each way it would have taken. Then I found out that you can drive to the bottom of the falls if we had just continued north up Rt3 30 just a bit. But, then I would have missed swimming at The Dumplings. In July the water was warm and about waist deep in most parts, we were the only swimmers. Slippery though, so be careful. Be sure to grab lunch at the Dam Diner in Townshed on the way home.
