There's a great trail (formerly the raidbed of a late 19th Century/early 20th Century reailway) which follows the West River for several miles; a great place to walk or bike with--or without--the kids. Along the way there are strategically placed benches and pic-nic tables. If you want a bit more--but not too--strenuous of a hike, then near the end of the river path follow a side trail up to Hamilton Falls, a short twenty-minute hike, where you will be rewarded by a dramatic falls and cascade; at the top there's a naturally occuring pool which is great for a refreshing dip. At the edge of this pool, seperated by a chest-high rock lip, the falls/cascade go almost straight down, so take care, as 14 people have plunged to their deaths over the years (I used to like to tempt fate by sitting on this lip; no longer since, with the advancing of age, I'm now subject to some "dizzy spells"!) Along the path up to the falls my son, running ahead, saw what he thought at first was a big black dog up ahead. As he got closer he discovered it was a BEAR! It ran off up the hill--and he rapidly retreated back to his dad!
