The Old Schoolhouse of Isle La Motte
Reviewed July 24, 2013

We just returned from a quick 400 km cycling loop of Lake Champlain. Our stay at the Old School House was one of our trip highlights. Carol is a wonderful, attentive and interesting hostess who makes you feel like you are an old friend. The accomodations are unique and would be great for a group of friends on a cycling holiday. There is a beautiful yard/garden, a warm inviting kitchen, table outside for a sunny day, games in the yard and plenty of space to store a bike. Carol is very knowledgible about all the island activites that the area has to offer. There is also swimming nearby and a variety of dining options from pizza (which might be accompanied by one of Carol's yummy fresh salads) to a lovely restaurant at the Ruthcliffe Lodge. The Isle La Motte is very well situated to explore the beauty of the Lake Champlain Islands by bike or car. We will definitely return to this gem. Thanks to Carol for creating such a wonderful summer retreat!! (and also thanks for sharing some laughs and time with your awesome friends!)

Just returned from a lovely stay at the Old Schoolhouse. Carol was a wonderful host and made us feel like welcomed family, which was especially nice as we were traveling with a 3 year old and a 4 month old baby! The accommodations were perfect for a curious toddler, spacious and with plenty to do in and out of the house. The garden had wild berries to be picked, and sweet peas to be munched, not to mention, delicious, fresh lettuces to be harvested for salad to accompany our pizza! Favorite moments were looking at the stars at night and seeing the garden filled with fireflies...We will return! Thanks Carol!

Six of us travelled from the greater Boston area to South Hero where we shed our cars and travelled our way up the Islands by bike (and one sag wagon) from one B&B to the next. We landed for our final two days at The Old Schoolhouse of Isle La Motte. The setting is lovely and relaxing, the owner, Carol, is fun and friendly. Guests were friendly and interesting. The accommodations were perfect. We had "AC", which come in handy on the first night, not needed the second night. While staying at The Old Schoolhouse we biked our way to New York and Canada and back to Isle La Motte. One morning, before heading off on our bikes for the day, we took a lovely walk along trails filled with prehistoric fossils and oodles of wildflowers. For food, breakfast was perfect at The School House however bring your own food for lunch and dinner if you don't particularly care for Pizza and convenience store fair (cold-cuts and white bread) but Ruthcliff restaurant $$$, located on Isle La Motte, was fabulous. At Ruthcliff we sat outdoors with a full view of the lake.

My Swiss husband and I have stayed at The Old Schoolhouse for two years in a row. On each trip, we've stayed for at least 5 days and have had such a wonderful experience. The owner, Carol, and her team are absolutely fantastic -- friendly, attentive and helpful. They have a tremendous knowledge of not only Isle La Motte, but the entire northern Vermont/Champlain Island biking area. As seasoned travelers and bikers, we are used to all sorts of accommodations. We were completely taken with the unique setting of the establishment (an authentic old schoolhouse), but soon discovered the 'at home' quality of the Schoolhouse. Most importantly, the accommodations were very clean, comfortable, affordable and biker friendly! There is so much to see on the islands, and the location is only one hour by car from Montreal and even less to Burlington. We look forward to returning again and again!

I recently stayed at the old schoolhouse on a solo bike tour of the islands. I had spent two nights at Grand Isle State Park before my arrival at the schoolhouse. I have absolutely no complaints about the service I received. It was a beautiful and unique building and the owner was welcoming and even let me stay where she usually keeps family since I was a lone, female traveler. She advised me on where to go for entertainment, food, and art. When I made the reservation, I had originally stated I wanted to stay for two nights, and ended up staying one. Despite my offering to pay the reservation fee, she refused it. I have a special diet that does not include dairy and she had all manner of dairy-free options available for breakfast, which was delicious (scones, muffins, cereal, coffee, fresh fruit, etc.). The feel of this place is homey, secure, and comfortable. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone and hope to go back again in the near future!

Stayed here with our 2 young children, ages 5 and 3, and had a great time. Carol is a warm, fun host with a strong knowledge of the area. Clean and child-friendly place, (lots of games, toys and musical instruments), with a relaxed and interesting atmosphere. Would definitely stay again. Thank you Carol!

we did a 2 day bike tour of the Champlain islands, we wanted a bike-friendly place and got SO much more...great scones, cool/funky room (complete with chalkboard!), and a wonderful host. if you are looking for a posh B&B with stuffy people dont go here, if you want real people with a laid-back sense of the Champlain islands then this is your place. we started our day with very good coffee and the daily poem read by the host!

Room Tip: if the early daylight wakes you up then take the "green room"
