We were just passing thru town when we came upon this lodge and lucky for us they had 1 room available. No sooner had we checked in when they handed us 2 bikes and sent us off on the 7 mile loop around the lake. When we got back we played a little tetherball and then took the short hike to the lake and more than enjoyed a sunset swim at their carefully tended private beach area. It was magical.

Our room was off the common area and a little noisy when people congregated outside our door but overall not a problem. We cannot recommend the restaurant (although the porch in the evening is fabulous) due to the service and the food was fine but nothing to rave about, better to take the 15 min drive to Harwick to eat at Claires. (Be aware there is no cell reception, but they are gracious with their phone and you can leave a dollar if you make a call.)

Overall, a wonderful stay and we hope to return one day to rock on their porch.

We are so glad you enjoyed your visit to Highland Lodge "back in the day." Have you heard that we bought the property last year? We added our new House Bar with a great chef, made nice improvements like a new dock on our private beach, and still have glorious ski trails groomed by our neighbors at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. There is also a gorgeous new performing arts center down the road - I hope you will come enjoy a bright new era at Highland Lodge! Best wishes from Heidi Lauren :)

The Highland Lodge is the perfect Vermont getaway. It is located in northern Vermont, surrounded by nature, pristine and quiet. It has a beautiful, little beach on Caspian Lake and is situated in the middle of a large trail network, with easy access to a number of state parks, nature preserves, and local attractions (such as Cabot Creamery, where excellent Vermont cheese is made).

The staff are truly unique: warm, wonderful, and great with kids. The rooms in the Lodge are cozy, and the cabins are comfortably rustic. Overnight fees include the cost of accommodations, dinner, and breakfast the next morning. The food is quite good, particularly breakfast.

If you are looking for a family vacation where you can walk in the woods in the morning, play by the lake all afternoon, and watch the stars while sitting on the porch after a good meal, then the Highland Lodge is for you.

I recently spent a weekend at the Highland Lodge as part of a birding tour. I loved every moment of it. It's setting overlooking Caspian Lake was great. I kept my window open at night and heard the loons calling. Even though the Lodge is right on the road, there is very little traffic. Every staffperson with whom I interacted was friendly and willing to go out their way for you. The food in the restaurant was phenomenal. The room was fine...not too frilly...but totally adequate. The downstairs common rooms have lots of nooks and crannies. All in all, I would highly recommend this place for folks who want "a place to get away from it all" with understated elegance. I definitely will return

With a 2 night stay and the BEST Nordic skiing ever, we relaxed in the ultimate way. The feeling of the place is special and unique with a charm and warmth throughout the spaces. Untouched and full of history and traditions, Highland Lodge will not disappoint those who enjoy the out of doors, can make their own fun, relax and are comfortable spending communal time with other very interesting guests. The food is well prepared and is of high local quality. The service and attention to making one feel at home is excellent without being invasive. The rooms very comfortable, quiet and well appointed to accomodate all the gear we New Englanders need to recreate!

The Nordic skiing ..... the finest !

Thanks so much for resisting the need to be like all the others!

If you stay for at least 2-3 nights, their half-board package and lovely staff will make sure you really relax and get to discover the surrounds. Rooms and shared areas in the main inn are charming and comfortable (the road has no traffic at night), the huts are a bit more rustic and not to my taste (they might be for a skiing or biking trip in a group). The food is hearty and honest. The staff is genuinely nice.

We didn't stay here; we just had dinner. It was a Tuesday night, but they seemed overwhelmed and no food arrived at the table for 45 minutes. Once it did arrive, a curious thing happened. My friend and I both ordered the lamb; I received my plate and then she was handed hers with a tiny amount of lamb on it and a comment that they were now out of lamb. They still charged us 1/2-price for this! Then we ordered dessert. One of us got a full helping of the lime coconut pie and the other got a few scraped up crumbs; this was also accompanied by the comment that they were now out of pie. The Lodge has a lovely atmosphere, but their approach to hospitality makes you feel like you stopped in at a friend's house when they weren't expecting you. I'm sure these issues can be addressed.

This is definitely a place for enjoying the out-of-doors year around. The inn is tucked away in a mostly undiscovered but beautiful small Vermont town. Swimming at Highland Lodge's beach on beautiful Caspian Lake was super, and lunch on the porch is a delight. Even sitting and reading in one of the rocking chairs on the porch is a nice outdoor activity. But my favorite time there is winter. The cross country trails which start at the Lodge's back door are as beautiful as any we have ever seen. The views and the downhills are exhilarating. We used to go to Trapps' to ski but that was before we found Highland Lodge. The Lodge has an ambiance that is rather like being at a friend's lovely country home. Everyone is very friendly and helpful and guests are made to feel at home. The maple muffins at breakfast are not to be missed!
