We spent a few days at this hotel and found it to be a lovely hotel. The rooms were beautifully decorated in a country style. We enjoyed a couple of walks in the neighbourhood. It was interesting seeing what the chefs had made and also nice to be able to buy their creations in the foyer.

Room Tip: The rooom we stayed in was spacious and had a window looking over the grounds. ( I think they all do...

Dear LazylillieCapetown,

The Essex Resort & Spa has 120 unique guestrooms each with its own personality, amenities and features and I am happy we found the one that was perfect for you. The surrounding neighborhood is great for a stroll. Many of our guests find it enjoyable to explore and look at the many different styles of homes along the way. Additionally, while we are secluded, we are walking distance to the Essex Outlet Mall and Cinema. Our lobby demonstration bakery is an extension of our fully equiped on-site bakery that is responsible for all of our tasty desserts and baked goods including bread.
Thank you for staying with us and for sharing your experiences.

My boyfriend and I spent a weekend with my dog at the Essex to participate in their "Top Dog" weekend. First the positives: the grounds are beautiful (though very close to the highway and a set of outlets) and the staff was very welcoming. We very much appreciated the hospitality and the attention to detail they put in to the "dog" elements of the weekend from the freshly baked treats to the guided walk at a local park. Jim and his staff were very polite and seemed genuinely enthusiastic to have us for the weekend. Now, the negatives: the room we booked was supposed to have a king-sized bed and a fireplace (which we paid a premium for, especially in this area of Vermont in "off" season) and upon arrival we were told that this room type was not available so we were "upgraded" to a larger suite that had neither a king bed nor a fireplace. While we appreciated the "upgrade," the suite was dated (wall-paper peeling from the walls), the bedroom was noisey and EXTREMELY small --- the door nearly did not close because of the bed (which we were told was a queen but believe was actually a double) and there was a small, gas stove instead of a real fireplace that did not work. I cannot speak for other rooms, but for a place that advertised "fireplace" rooms with a picture of a real fireplace, a tiny, non-working gas stove is not a subsititute. As far as food, we ordered room service the first night due to cold and rainy weather and were generally unimpressed for a "culinary" resort. Nothing terrible but nothing notably good either.

Overally, we enjoyed the people we met at the Essex but for the price, the amentities and rooms were disappointing. We have stayed at a number of other New England resorts of similar types with our dog for better prices and much better accommodations.

Dear NYCTraveler323,

Thank you for joining us for another successful Top Dog Weekend at the Essex Resort & Spa and for sharing the many positive aspects of the event and property. I very much enjoyed meeting you and Max, and am sorry to now learn that you didn’t enjoy every aspect of your stay.

With regard to our location and others that may be reading this, I would like to add some clarity. We are just under a mile away from a 2-lane “highway” and the Essex Outlets & Cinema. While these are nice attractions and conveniences for our resort guests, neither can be seen nor heard from our 18 acre campus.

Your compliments of the event and staff will be shared with all of the associates as this is a great way to thank them for the amazing efforts they put forth each day. In following up on the room situation, I’ve now learned that our Director of Reservations, Kyle Palmer, spoke to you directly regarding you room. He does acknowledge that your request for a king bed with a fireplace was present. However, one that met this criteria and that was pet friendly was not available during your stay with us. Therefore, Kyle upgraded you to a much larger suite at no additional expense and provided you with breakfast vouchers as a gesture of goodwill. The handcrafted Vermont Castings gas stove in your room is a favorite of many of our guests. It was found to be operational and your comment around its functionality has prompted us to explore better operating signage in the room. Further, our Director of Facilities is having the wallpaper you mentioned repaired today.

Our culinary team loves when guests enjoy the food they prepare but also appreciate critiques as a way to constantly improve. Would you please provide me with more details as to what did not meet your expectations regarding the room service meal?

Again, it was great having you with us and I’m sorry that we ultimately did not meet your expectations, but I very much appreciate your feedback. I hope that we might have the chance to have you and Max back with us in the future.

Sincerely,
Jim Glanville
General Manager

The hotel was beautiful, all the rooms were very nice, and every person we interacted with was incredibly nice, professional, and helpful. I was the photographer for a wedding here and not only was the wedding an incredibly lovely event, but I cannot say enough about how great the facility and staff was.

If you are looking for a location for a wedding I would highly recommend this hotel. The event coordinator, Shana, was an absolute joy to work with and made sure every detail of the day was just as planned. Your guests will all be staying a beautiful location that is clean, very high end, and full of great amenities and exceptional service.

If you are just looking for a nice place to stay to visit this beautiful area, I would definitely suggest the Essex. I was only able to try the food at the wedding, which was wonderful, but I definitely wish I got to try out the restaurants after hearing all the good reviews. This hotel is well worth the price, and the staff and facility really exceed all expectations!

Went here in October. Nice place, rooms were nicely decorated and cozy. Never got to try the restaurant because they were small and the waits were too long. You would think it being a culinary institute they would be able to accommodate more visitors. We ended up asking about nearby resturants and were directed to a sub place and chinese place at the outlets. Lucky for us we found a lovely Bistro a few miles away. The spa services were great. One downside was the bed which was not comfortable at all and undid what was done at the spa. We would like go back to try their culinary fare. All in all it is a nice place.

Dear estr49,

Thank you for posting this review. I am pleased to hear you had a great time overall. It is, however, unfortunate that you were not able to experience our culinary offerings. At times we seem to be victims of our own success and have far too many diners than we have tables for. Our Food & Beverage Director is in the early stages of developing ideas for expanding our dining rooms. Additionally, our world class Spa is also a much sought after guest destination. The first phase of our bedding upgrades has begun to happen. with the placement of our new fluffy pillows. New luxurious mattresses will begin to arrive before the end of this year. Hopefully you may consider a return visit to experience these improvements.

Everyone at this resort is extremely helpful, terrific service, very welcoming. Since it is a culinary school, the food is really amazing - great variety, great presentation... You can score sample goodies in the bakery during the day, the Spa is beautiful, especially love the outdoor hot tub... and the resort is easy to get to, off I-89 just outside of Burlington, VT.

I brought 13 other women with me, we had a terrific time. Lots of neat little wineries in the general area, plus Cabot cheese, Ben & Jerry's ice cream and VT Teddy Bears.

Lovely!

Dear Deb L,

I agree, Vermot in the Fall is wonderful and leads us into the magical winter season. Imagine all of those trees covered in snow. Your compliments regarding the friendly, courteous hospitality you received are much appreciated. Our team of culinary artists is led by Certified Master Chef, Arnd Sievers and inspired by Executive Chef Shawn Calley. Together they have created a truly unique experience. Including the lobby demonstration bakery where you watch our bakers put the finishing touches on the wedding cakes. Our world class Spa is an oasis of relaxation and luxury. Thank you for taking the time to post this review and for your support of The Essex Resort & Spa. See you again soon.

Had an excellent ladies' weekend at the Essex. The food is fantastic. But more importantly the staff is wonderful and attentive. I have high praise for their customer service. Love the treats they have in the lobby especially the hot cider and fresh baked cookies!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a fireplace!

Dear Robin V,

Thank you for choosing the Essex Resort & Spa for your recent ladie's weekend and for your compliments regarding the culture of service and hospitality we are so proud of.
The hot cider and cookies offered in the lobby are just some of the amazing creations from our on site bakery led by Executive Pastry Chef Robert Alger. He and his team are responsible for all the tasty dessert delights and baked goods including our breads. You can also watch as they complete the cakes for our weddings in the lobby demonstration bakery.
