“Great place for a romantic weekend”
Reviewed March 6, 2012

The staff helped make our long weekend in early March a wonderful experience. There was so much to do: Trapp Family Lodge for X-C skiing, downtown Burlington shops for browsing and eating, hiking around local reservoir, snowshoeing, and of course the hot tub and restaurants there at the Essex. There were a ton of other things to do, but those will have to wait for our next visit. The Inn is cozy, the staff friendly and helpful, and the food outstanding.

Great place to stay. Almost every room is different, but all are very nice. Some have fireplaces and are decorated like I would imagine Romney's rooms are. Super nice people ( like most Vermonters ) , a golf course across the street, a spa, an outside pool and a New England Culinary Institute restaurant , movie theater within walking distance and still in the woods.

My husband and I drove to the Essex from Baltimore for our belated honeymoon. Money was tight, but we were able to stay within our budget. We loved everything... the staff (both hotel and restaurant)... the pool... the food... the fitness center. It was the perfect experience. We loved the Essex so much, we extended our trip by an extra night.

The room was cozy with a very comfortable bed (and lots of soft pillows), three lamps, a desk & chair, a small closet, small dresser, two sitting chairs, and a large flat-screen TV. The bathroom was tiny and usually about 10 degrees cooler than our room. The in-room heater was easy to use, but very loud. Some of the decor and furnishings showed their age, but none of these things would prevent us from staying at the Essex again.

We only dined at the Tavern. The food was delicious and adequately priced. Breakfast was always delicious and not over-filling (try the blueberry smoothie).

There is complimentary coffee in the lobby in the mornings and cookies and cider in the evenings.

We're already planning our next trip up!

Room Tip: The key cards are very, very sensitive. We spent a lot of time walking back down to the front desk t...

I'd like to start off by saying that I'm not sure if anyone stays at the Essex without having a deal. We got a discount on "Living Social," but we've also seen it on Jetsetter, and I've heard of discounts from travelzoo as well. We drove up from Boston in a storm--usual drive should be 3.5 hours, although 5 hours later when we got there, we were exhausted. However, despite the snow, I swear that the staff had cleaned off my car the next morning--there's no way that the snow melted off that fast--that's service. The standard rooms are cute--brightly colored, perhaps a bit small, and the bed was a bit lumpy. The bathrooms are small, and I was a bit disappointed that they don't give you spa robes in the rooms, considering that they consider themselves to be a "resort and spa." Probably my biggest problem with the rooms was that the walls are really paper-thin, so when the cleaning of the hallways starts early in the morning, you can hear all the vacuuming. There are 2 restaurants on the property--the tavern is a nice bar, with good local beer selection (a good reason to visit Vermont given the lack of snow this season), and really good food, which is locally sourced. We did go to their other restaurant, Amuse, the next night, and were not disappointed. It's not cheap, but we did enjoy the experience. To go to the spa, you have to walk under a covered walkway from the main building. There is a separate indoor pool and outdoor jacuzzi area, which is kind of fun, in the freezing cold to use an outdoor jacuzzi--any guests of the hotel can use those amenities. Then there is the real spa area. You can go to the real spa for the day with booking any spa service. The lounges, showers, steam room, and relaxation areas are all brand new, and very bright. Relaxing and very nice. We enjoyed the spa quite a bit, although as one other reviewer voiced the same concerns--although we got a deal on the room, all of the extras do add up.

In a quaint corner of Chittenden County we found a little bit of magic. The Inn At Essex provided us with a brief get away, relaxing spa environment and scrumptious food. We have decided to make it an annual tradition. Well worth the money. We highly recommend!

My girlfriend and I once spent an amazing weekend here, and it was soo great that I decided to bring her back to to propose to her. Unfortunately, money was tight and I was concerned about all the little "extras" that would add up.

Jason (at the front desk) worked with me to find a room and date that would fit within my budget, and even waived the pet fee so our dog could be part of the engagement surprise! They absolutely go above and beyond -- and the accommodations are everything you could hope for in a 4-star resort! CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS ENOUGH!

We went to Essex over February break and my husband and I and our two girls had a great time. The rooms are very comfortable with incredible beds, linens and towels. We had a traditional room in the main inn which was a bit crowded for 2 adults and 2 kids. We asked about an upgrade and they couldn't be nicer about finding us a much more spacious room that was still a traditional. There are mini Keurig brewers in the rooms which is a nice touch. The heated indoor pool is in a large vaulted space with comfortable seating. We had a groupon and received a cooking class and massage as part of the deal. Both were fantastic experiences. The spa at Essex is really something special. We also took advantage of Northern Lights adventure center which is in walking distance.
