“Great food, terribly surly staff.”

We hit this after the Kingdom Trails and (no exaggeration) felt like we were intruding. Not one smile or even a hint of welcoming for our group. We dropped $50 in food and beer and I was pretty put off by the girls behind the counter. Having said that, the food was really good. The group got 1 turkey, 1 loaded roast beef and a grilled cheese (not recommended). The deviled eggs were especially welcomed & the cookie was out of this world good! Overall, we'll go back whenever we ride the trails but recommend the sales staff work on their customer friendliness a bit.

“Good food and funky atmosphere”

Some friends and I were headed for Burke Mountain and we stopped off in East Burke for lunch. Given that this is a tourist area, we girded our wallets for a high-priced, low quality meal. As it turned out we couldn't have been more wrong. Instead of the tiny portion and high price tag, we got some very filling meals at a reasonable price.

Of course, the size may have been due to the fact that Burke Mountain attracts the type of tourist that walks around with a bicycle on this shoulder, has about 3 percent bodyfat and probably consumes 5,000 calories a day. I felt as if I was in one of David Drake's Drakka novels.

The store itself is very interesting. It probably should be in the "attractions" rather than the "restaurants" category.

One of the staff told me it dated from the Civil War era and had just been restored. As a subscriber to "Old House Journal," I was fascinated with the ornate woodwork and molding.

Aside from the food, they offer a wide variety of Vermont and Vermont-themed products including the inevitable maple syrup and Bag Balm ointment.
